Emberquill, you sensible, intelligent, wonderful person. =) Okay, so I'm biased, but I agree with you completely. Thanks for having the stones to admit that sentimentality does not a brilliant choir make.
NU -- you have some fans! Again, I don't want to disparage Vox, who are in themselves a wonderful choir, but I have to say that I personally find the sympathy card/tear coaxing angle quite nauseating. The emphasis on Vox's lack of finances was, admittedly, not really Vox's fault, but their song choices were just a little bit too bland and sappy for my liking. Still--congrats again, Vox, and of course NU, my personal favourite of the competition. =) |

I don't know if it's coincidence, but I also thought Angel was sappy and over-sentimental! (I was keeping quiet because so many people list it as their favourite performance out of the whole series) I just felt that it was impossible to compare it to Bicycle - it was a safe, simple arrangement designed to play the sentimental card with the judges and the audience. I felt that Vox performed it well (better the first time than the second) but their song choices for the whole series were based on playing the sentimental card (and this was also compounded by repeated shots of choristers saying that they would cease to exist without monetary support next year, etc.)
I'm not saying that Vox are a bad choir. I think they have a beautiful sound and the ability to give a moving performance. I believe that if it was an audience vote, they would have won. I am just saying that I feel there was sentimentality bias, and that I don't agree with this basic premise in a competition (even though I know that it's really the basis of all reality shows). That's why I'm glad NU won. With all the hype about the other choirs, the fact that Newcastle was the only choir who really, really stepped out of their comfort zone has been forgotten somewhat. The judges showed their knowledge and expertise and picked the choir with the best sound and blend, but also the choir who didn't need hype to show how much they have grown. |

I don't suppose this will stay here for long, but Channel Seven is part of the mass media, and will only tell you what they want to tell you, and then they call that news.
It's great they featured choirs on TV, but as I said before a shark will bite you, it's their nature. It's all ratings and money to them and being politically correct as someone said before.
Once again, well done all the choirs. I would have thought though that a CD featuring 3 or 4 choirs would have more appeal than a CD just featuring one choir. Interesting to see how it sells.
The next bit is from the ABC website, Saturday morning.
Advocacy group GetUp says they expect to be reimbursed for advertisements protesting human rights abuses in China that were stopped from going to air during the coverage of the Olympic opening ceremony.
The org *** ation says they paid Channel Seven to feature the ads before and after the event and were given approval to do so.
GetUp's Brett Solomon says he is extremely disappointed by the decision not to air the ads.
"This is really a slap in the face to all the people who put in small amounts of money to fund the advertisement and so I guess there's a range of options at this point," he said.
GetUp says it will continue to try to get mainstream coverage for the campaign but will now approach other commercial networks. |

It's okay, ribusmouse. It's like this everywhere. Apparently if you express an opinion that isn't 100 % mild-mannered, that becomes offensive.
Don't ask me why people think someone having an opinion different to their own is offensive, but welcome to this century. It's all about political correctness. |

| Ribusmouse - I did read your message which was deleted - it was all about one particular choir - you were being truthful about how you felt about them - but it was a bit full-on, and perhaps all the members of that particular choir pressed the abuse button - ? I notice there was no reason given for the deletion. I just put it down to your not having a good breakfast that day, and you perhaps said more than you meant to. You definitely didn't use the word "rehearsal" in your comments. |

Ribusmouse, don't take it personally. There were other messages on this site that didn't appear to be offensive, abusive, harrassing, threatening or obscene and yet those messages were deleted as well.
Got no idea what you said but someone obviously didn't agree with your comments, they complained and managed to get your message deleted.
Not really fair, but it you don't agree with certain people (or choirs), I've noticed those comments get taken off fairly quickly. . .
Free speech for all I say - everyone should be entitled to an opinion and then allow debate afterwards. |

To all - in the words of Iva Davies "Lighten up, that was fun!"
I am a Harambee supporter and I have watched all 8 episodes of BOTC several times - I enjoyed all of them and found something unique to appreciate in every performance.
My favorite non-Harambee performances were (in series order)
"Man in the Mirror" (Blenders, Heat 1) - a Michael Jackson song I never liked until this performance.
"Bat out of Hell" (Newcastle Uni, Heat 4) - in the prescient words of some Harambee members "frighteningly good". Just great fun!
"Angel" (Voxsynergy, Q-Final 1) - just about the single most moving effort in the series
"I Got You" (Soulfood, Q-Final 1) - great energy
"Fix You" (Barker, Q-Final 2) - just brilliant
"Bubbly" (Voiceworks, S-Final) - beautiful, and great effort by guitar-guy in front row - nice touch.
So congratulations to all the music directors and all the singers - may all the choirs get more singers and more audience members when they perform in the future! |

Thank you emberquill! I totally agree. That's why I admire NU so much--they were perfect, perfect, perfect--absolutely transcendent to listen to--and I don't think everyone appreciates how incredibly hard it is to have the level of detail and clarity that they achieved in their singing.
And again, I have to say--the songs they dared to sing were amazing! I must be the only person in the world that thinks that Angel is a terrible, sentimental song that was trumped hands down by Bicycle (and Purple Haze, which I enjoyed tremendously!).
I hasten to say that this is a comment on SONG CHOICE, and not how the choirs sang them. *tiptoeing again* |

Yes sanshyminly08 - go the Maroons!!! I can smell the victory already!
I promised myself that I would not make any more comments on BOTC......so I won't, EXCEPT that if BOTC had been an Eisteddfod, there would have been one judge, choirs would have been given a number, they would have competed in all the genre, the judge wouldn't have known where anyone came from, a championship would have been awarded at the end, no big money prize, just recognition of a job well done......but probably not as exciting, and perhaps a tad boring for some? well, time for another nanna nap....great grannie. |

Re Jonathon's bias towards Victorian choirs: In most other serious competitions/eisteddfods, it is unprofessional to have had any recent personal contact with the judges (or to be open about it...)
BTW, did we have a "biased" judge representing each state competing in the comp?
Oh well, we still won State of Origin!! yeah!! |

NU shouldn't sing Angel because it is not their song...Hmmm I seem to remember that it was actually recorded before Vox ever got their hands and voices on it. And if Vox want to do Bicycle, Bycycle, Bicicle Race (sorry MichaelMan) or what ever, I think it would be good to hear what they could do with it.
Actually [frodobaggins82] I take your point but I think Jonathon made it very clear throughout the series that he favoured Victoria. Vox is one of my favourites but his public outburst about not agreeing with the other judges on NU's win certainly made a clear statement. With his Opera background he should have easily been able to see why NU was the winning choir. [aprzewlocki] I know you are a personal friend of Jonathan's and I don't mean to offend, but I think he is very biased. |

I agree with you. And you don't have to tiptoe - I can't believe how precious some of the people on this forum have been. Your opinion is appreciated and valued, and good humour also! It's much more difficult to get 40 voices to blend seamlessly, incorporating many different voices singing a melody line, and then the harmony parts underneath, than to have a soloist with backing harmonies. Ultimately, it's more rewarding to do the former, because there is nothing quite like the sound of voices blending beautifully on the same harmonic without wavering. Even the untrained ear can hear the difference between a choir with a beautiful blend and one without. In a choir competition, soloists may add interest to a performance but I feel that the ensemble should not be judged during a solo because it is not real choral singing. |

bettyb708 - you make a good point. Perhaps, considering this, it's more the solos in general (and the incredible amount of them!) that I objected to. I know I'm not the only one who thought there were too many solos going on throughout the competition (I am not targeting anyone here, by the way, because I think a lot of the choirs did this), and I know a lot of people disagree with me, too, but...
I just feel a choir should be a choir, and judged as an ensemble, and not by a collection of solos. Some of the judges seemed to do the latter, commenting at great length on how beautiful a soloist's singing was...which is all very well, but I don't know. It just felt wrong for me since BOTC is a choir show & all.
(Notice how mild-mannered I'm being? You guys have got me tiptoeing! I shan't ever use the word 'lame' again--oh, no, I've learnt my lesson. (Only half kidding. But seriously guys. Develop a sense of humour. It feels like we're discussing life & death in here!)) |

actually michaelman, not quite correct...
i'm not from the choir, but know people in it quite well...
it is Bicycle Race, not Bycicle Race, or just bycicle. also, they were quite happy to do angel, and it wasn't granada's call at all, it was an internal suggestion. and not sure i want to imagine vox doing bicycle race either... |

It was Universals/Granadas Call on that. Who ever had won the show would not have had any say in what went on the album as you can imagine, so I am sure they were a little apprehensive when they got handed the music for Angel. I know Vox would of been if we got handed "Bycicle"...LOL...I actually dont want to imagine us doing that to be honest.
For all those who call it Bycicle Race....ITS JUST BYCICLE! |
