Sadly, the Blue Mountains are a retreat either for wealthy holiday-house owners, or a refuge for the mentally ill.

Hi Sallie
I hope its ok to email you. I just wondered how you are finding things in the mountains. My hubby and I are seriously considering moving there from Sydney - we are in our early thirties and also concerned about work. Anyway it would be great to hear from someone who has relocated aswell.
All the best
Irene

Try seeing things with a less polarised lens Stanley.

I can tell from the way you wrote that, you fit into the latter category I mentioned. Stop chewing your pillow and get help my friend. And for god's sake, move out of the mountains, you're lowering the tone. Or it's lowering yours' or something. Ho ho ho. Actually, I stayed there for a while and that's what I found. Hell of a lot of "refugees" from Sydney, and or well-to-do retirees and holiday home owners. I was, however, deep up at Mt Victoria, and of course, I wasn't entirely being serious. Either with that remark, or the one I just made to you. I can tell, you're one of the sane ones.

I am neither wealthy or mentally ill, and I live in the Blue Mountains. I know many people in the same position.

Re:Move to the Blue Mountains Reply to this message
hi sallie :)
i live quite close to penrith near the blue mountains and i know [as do many in this area] that work and living come further apart if you want the good positions .
basically ,if you want a good job in that field alot of people would commute to sydney or parramatta . really it just depends where in the mountains you go ....the higher up the longer the commute ....sorry but its the facts when living round here .
goodluck and i hope you and your family have a safe and happy relocation .
michelle :)

As someone who lived in The Blue Mountains I hope I can help.

Because The Blue Mountains is really based on tourists, I think as many people do you have to travel to either Penrith, Parrmatta, Blacktown or The City to get work.

Or you can stay on the Mountains and try Blue Mountains Council or smaller business who are looking for a IT person.

Good luck.

PS And you really need a car to travel around.

That seems to be the problem, you find a great place to live and......whoops no work, or you live in a dirty city and theres lots more employment opportunities. I think this sea change thing is good for retirees or people who could afford to buy a business, unless you're are a professional person. Sorry I can't help.

Move to the Blue Mountains Reply to this message
Hi All, I am about to take the biggest adventure ever, I am moving from Canberra where I grew up to the Blue Mountians. My husband and I have decided that the Canberra life is too much for us and we need a change. I have been here all my life my whole family are here(Mum, Dad an two sisters, two Niece's and Nephue's), but we have been going to the mountains since the first year we met (five years ago) and now one child later and we know that is where we are supposed to be.

I have been with the public service for over 10 years and thought it would be a lot eaisr to find work up there but I am finding it hard and am try everything.

Any advise muchly appreciated.
