My story starts with a Commonwealth Department job in Adelaide where I had been for 16 years, and in a job that was as the proverbial saying goes "as safe as houses". Living in the southern suburbs, the drag of commuting everyday to work yet the possibility of a promotion around the corner but a medical condition that would not heal had me yearning for something more. Drag of leaving home at 6.30 am and getting back just under 12 hours later on many occasions - not the tonic I needed! Never been to the country but a job at a hospital had me giving it a go. Even going to the interview I had no real idea what I wanted in life or whether the move away from family & friends was what I really wished for. I landed the job at Whyalla Hospital - made the move with my wife and kids and settled into a lifestyle that now has me touring parts of the state I have never seen. I now own three houses and a camper trailer that gets a run every month. I live 3 minutes WALK from my workplace and it takes me just 10 mins to drop the kids off and go to work. Whyalla has over 300 days of sunshine, is a booming centre, and I have had Kangaroos in my front garden! It is now 28 months after I made the move.... if anything it has given me a zest for more - and yes, I love my job, and have also completed FOUR study qualifications in 2006. The outback is wonderful and I have no regrets. Sure I miss my family and friends and my adelaide home, but I wouldn't swap it back... It is wonderful to sleep in, go to work for 8 hours, come home, walk the dog, get the kids, sit and watch something on TV then get Tea and still have time to socialise with friends, or play a sport. The real seachange - think it, plan it then do it!
