Congratulations to Mark. I think he was fantastic. As for Jal... yes talented boy... but there lots of kids who have great voices like him. There is nothing really different about him. But as for Mark, there are not many kids his age that have a voice like that.

voice and great stage presence. It is a shame only one could win. These 2 performers will probably go onto great careers here and overseas. Mark will need a lot more training if he wants to be a world class opera singer but he should think about applying for his state classical training tuition training with VCA, Melbourne Uni, etc to develop his skills.

*** 2nd part of 2 parts. I am not used to limiting a review.

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
After seeing my 126th opera last night at The Arts Center I understand that many people may see opera as not being mainstream. To a certain extent that may be true. But it is the peak expression of the Arts encompassing costume and set design; artistic sculpture and painting; acting; singing by chorus, duets, arias, etc; dancing; and many other disciplines. Many of its attributes are shared with musicals, but the skill of the singers is far and away much better in the opera world. My favourites have been the Bregenz Festival production of La Boheme by Puccini in 2002 which is truelly spectacular, The Flying Dutchmen by Wagner is a must see, plus The Ring Cycle also by Wagner. My favorite composers in order are Wagner, Puccini, Verdi, Handel, Mozart, Monteverdi. The variation in styles is amazing in the operas and the stagings. No two La Bohemes are the same, no 2 La Traviatias are done the same. Even within one particular opera the staging, costumes, comedy timing, and other aspects can be totally different depending on the company and the designers.

I saw a large group of well dressed teenagers that were there to see a contemporary staging of Bellini's The Capulets and Montagues that was a study on civil wars between two parties that lead to bloodshed on both sides, recriminations for ongoing murders, 2 lovers who were caught up in the insane hate fueled dueling, eventually leading to both their deaths.

This staging was in the international style and encompassed the general feel of similar conflicts in the last 70 years.
Such as in the conflict between the IRA and the English, between the Protestants and the Catholics. Brother against brother, neighbour against neighbour.

It was great to see Mark Vincent extend his journey to the final. I preferred his non opera songs such as 'Hallelujah'
and This is the Moment. I think if he had of Sung Puccini's Nessum Dorma from Turandot in the Grand Final he would have lost to the 11 year old singer who had a great ...

If you only listen to music with words "you understand" then you're really missing out on a world of musical experience.

WOW Ruth! You saw the BeeGees on Bandstand!!!!

You are all in at the ground floor of a new star. I remember the BGees on Bandstand with their tea chest bass and Paul Hogan, his gum boots, shorts, and rubbish bin.. [can't remember may be red faces] Give this boy time to grow and use his prize to develop his talent and you too will see the beginings of a new tall poppy.

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
errrr - think we missed the point here - people didn't vote for opera - they voted for talent. Mark has talent; a lot of it. Singing goes way beyond the name, words or style of a song.

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
Mark has an operatic voice so of course he'll perform songs in a way that sounds like an opera (which means 'drama set to music'). I see nothing wrong with that - even tho I'm not a big fan of Opera. The same is true of blues style vocalists or country singers etc.

In fact, I was very impressed with Mark's rendition of Hallelujah - it's such an over-done cliched song these days but his version was refreshingly unique and original.

Viva la difference!

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
Just because a person stands on stage and sings as a tenor, barritone etc., does not mean they are singing from operas. Mark Vincent, yes, has sung songs from Operettas, but has also included the same songs as others 'Hallelujah' sung by Leonard Cohen, K D Lang etc. I doubt they would be classified in the same genre as Opera singers.
Paul Potts on his latest album includes many songs eg. 'Whiter Shasd of Pale', albeit in Italian, that are not from operettas.

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
I think he was a deserving winner, but what annoys me is the fact that many of these singers are taking non-operatic songs and turning them into opera. I nearly choked when I heard 'Hallelujah' last week. NOT opera and not written in Italian. It was the same last night with Paul Potts.
Talent does not mean that you have to belt out every song like Pavarotti.

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
Australian's DO like opera. It's an extremely hard genre to sing in. And you cannot deny that Mark Vincent has talent!

How can anyone say that it was rigged because Australia doesn't like opera? I don't like opera much myself but I know talent when I see it.

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
If I remember rightly Mark Vincent didn't just sing Opera.

In the semi-finals he sang This is the Moment - not opera, and in the Grand Final he sang Hallelujah - once again not opera.

Why is he labelled as an "opera" singer when it was most likely the producers who asked him to sing Nessum Dorma in the final the same as they got Jal to sing Over the Rainbow - IMHO the worst song of all his performances.

Personally I think Mark is one very talented young man and I have no problem with him winning.

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
Look guys... hardly anyone in australia likes opera

Gee - that's a bit of a generalisation...

Seriously - who ever wins these shows has nothing to do with what the WHOLE country thinks. So say we are "jumping on the bandwagon" with the whole opera thing is just stupid.

You all must be forgetting how big the population of Australia is. Out of the 20 odd million people living in Australia, I think you will only find at most 20 - 50,000 (stab at the dark) people who actually voted in this competition. Most people who watch the show probably don't even vote.

So out of a small percentage of people who actually watch the show, and who actually vote - they are they ones who put these winners through.

It certainly isn't "Australia's doing".

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
Yes, I think that's how many sees it.

And as for opera just being for older people, that's not true at all and seeing this 15 year old, I'm sure he will get more younger people to start appeciating it.

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
I tend to agree there.

However marketability comes into play. Personally I loved William (Diablo Boy), and David Splatt from this years show. Problem is how far can you take an act like that?

Would you sit through 2 hrs of it, or get bored after an hr?

Some acts are circus acts, and would be okay as part of a larger show but wouldn't have the feet to support an entire gig. I think this is why singers and dancers tend to feature quite highly (having said this a lady playing the spoons was a close second last year).

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
I think you missed my point! I wasn't really wishing the 12 year old won either (although he is exceptionally talented and cute). There was so much more variety other than singing. Yes, I voted for the family of acrobats, absolutely amazing!!! Did everyone go and get their cups of tea when the really cool stuff came on????

Re:Why Opera??? Reply to this message
Quite right icetea.
But I bet Mel & Kochie will be very happy when he appears on their show tomorrow, yet again.
Was that his Mother or his Aunty in the audience or maybe it was his Aunty who put all the messages on the board back abit saying she was a friend who went to school with him.
Jal was far better than Mark & I just think that they had him picked from the start.
What about the family act & nobel the dancer they were all just as good.
I NOW FEEL IT WAS ALL GOT UP IM AFRAID.
