| I believe that sometimes red could keep some of his remarks to himself. but he'll never be kicked off the show because he is pretty much the entertainer. some people watch it just to see reds requests.Reds actually the only judge who has any sense of what talent is and if he doesn't like it then he'll let people know. | Sue I have friends who are aboriginal and they have 'lived your life'. They decided to choose to rise above it and don't carry a boulder of hate and victim mentality on their shoulders like you appear to. They believe the adage of 'I am, you are, we are ALL Australians' and that by working TOGETHER we can build a better future. They are too busy 'living' in Australia (I see you are in America!!) to waste their time or energy with someone like Red who is beneath them. The bottom line is that in Australia, blacks and whites are equil and have been since before all of us on this thread were born so I could not care less about what happened before I was alive. | Lizzie, I commend your mates for not taking offence at Red's comment. It is undoubtedly the best course of action, if possible. The fact remains there are people out there that do find such comments offensive and as such the question maybe to look at the positives and negatives in Red's remark and consider its true value. Was Red's attempt at humour 'so funny' that its omission would have adversely affected the success of his performance? And are such comments worth making when they have the potential of causing anguish in even just a minority of people? Probably not in either case. The remark remains a glib, unfunny, racially based, ill-conceived piece of poor taste that could only be found amusing by those with a racist bend. | Do you really believe you where ignored because of the color of your skin or the tone of your voice, often the reason is something totaly honest such as you where not in the shop keepers line of sight or someone was faster or more forceful in getting the shop keepers attention and the unsecure or emotionaly weak shop assistant is to scared not to speak up.I live in Mt Druitt in Sydneys west one of the toughest areas in NSW there's housewifes here that beat their husbands up if they stand out of line. These days you need to be tough and assertive at the chechout not because people re all racist but because everyone in line has a hundred places to be and no time to do it in. you've heard of dog eat dog its not that people are racist or like to discriminate against people. And I am one to know as I'm a C5 Quadriplegic living on a disabilities support pension , their is less funding for me at tafe and less services or examtions for the disabled . then able bodied indiginous students they also get greater funding from centrelink to go to school then me. The government give indigious students of all ages an easier path to qualify for courses and fast track their employment in government jobs and they have thousands of indiginous only position advertised all around Australia for the taking they can't fill. Indiginous Australians need to realise most of use couldn't care what color you are and we want you to succeed, but you are the master of your own destiny and you can't keep blamming us for what a bunch of smelly poms did to a relation of yours you never even knew. |

I just typed out of frustration and when I read it back realised how it did sound - I have been labelled a racist before by people who have spent their lives studying in a classroom and who have no real experience of the issues and problems that these people face. But they appear to think they are their knight in shining armour - trust me - they wouldn't last 10 secs. The reality makes me sad - you can't buy people their self esteem back but because I have mates who have succeeded in helping themselves to rise above it I know with a different attitude anyone (and I mean anyone) can get there. | Couldn't agree with you more, Lizzie Beannie, if that's your name. I haven't lived on a mission, that is why I won't comment on matters pertaining to mission life. The point in this forum is that Red Symmonds made a cheap shot with a comment that was fundamentally based on race and whilst it may not offend some Indigenous people, it may offend others. It was a cheap shot, obviously not thought out and probably one that Red regrets. You seem to have a good first hand knowledge base, being someone that works and lives with Indigenous people, but there are many in this forum that appear to be making comments without the advantage of your ( or any other) knowledge base.
