William McInnes was really good in The Shark Net, as he was in Curtin.

Tim Draxl plays the part of the author, William McInnes' son, as a teenager.

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
This is taking a quantum leap sideways but ..... you mentioned the ABC teledrama 'The Shark Net'. I remember that I began watching it, but didn't see it all. Surprising really, as I think William McInnes, one of my favourite actors, was in it.

Anyway, last weekend I attended a two-day Writing Conference and listened to about 24 different speakers, one of whom was Robert Drewe, the author of 'The Shark Net'.

He read a chapter of the book and it was absolutely hilarious. So much so that I had to buy the book, of course, and get it signed. I think I'll read the book though before I see it on DVD (if it's available).

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
Tim sounds like a possibility but there must be quite a few out there who could try for the role. I have to admit that the name Frankie Valli only rings a distant bell for me so I'm the last person to give an opinion. I expect most of the 'possibles' will not be available so who knows where a "Frankie" will be found. Offshore perhaps?

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
Yes. I am entitled to an opinion.
The Prayer is a mawkish pretend- religious song.
Idol has lots going for it as TV entertainment and its big audience leads to big record sales.

I have just listened to Anthony Callea singing "Bridge over troubled Waters" and anybody who thinks that is a good rendition is just as entitled to their opinion as I am to mine - there's no accounting for taste. To me it is badly sung, badly phrased, badly mouthed, warbles all over the place making approximate stabs at the notes and is totally, superficially sentimental, showing no understanding of the words.

When Anthony gets "older and wiser" he may be able to project some real meaning into what he sings. That he has been gifted with a very good voice is without question.

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
He went to the McDonald College, same as Nikki Webster, and was (is) managed by Les Solomon, same as David Campbell, (so followed much the same career path as David Campbell - Cabaret - New York etc)

He had a Sony recording contract when he was 16 years old. He has been in films - the Swimming one with Geoffrey Rush - the ABC teledrama The Shark Net and others. He has sung on ABC radio.

He considers himself foremost to be an actor, but has a very good singing voice - better than Anthony Callea.

He is about 24 years old now.

I don't know what he is doing at the moment.

He just hasn't sung a mawkish, pretend-religious song with lots of vibrato and soulful looks on Idol. I think that would have been beneath his standards.

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
Recognise things for what they are.

David Campbell being referred to as "King of Swing" or "Swing Sensation" is simply marketing.

How can one possibly become the King of Swing or a Sensation? Not by writing it on the CD Label!

You might gather from that, that I am just as much underwhelmed when David Campbell is announced as King of Swing as when Anthony is introduced as being the holder of the record for selling the most single copies of The Prayer.

This thread is an exchange of opinions as to whom might be given the role of Frankie Valli. Idle chatter.

So far we have: David Campbell - too old, too broad, too tall, not Italian
versus
Anthony Callea, too short.

Have I missed any of the arguments raised against these two contenders?

akabec what is it about you???? You are really a bulldog when it comes to me, aren't you???

Opinions come and go, back and forth. Every poster, as they post, is momentarily having the "last word". That's called conversation.

Someone implies that a performer has to be an Italian to play an Italian on stage. I answer that an actor can die their hair black, or whatever.

What did I say that put your nose out of joint?

Give it a rest!

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
I think 'Guise' is refering to John LLOYD Young, the originator of the role of Frankie Valli on Broadway.

As to being refered to 'Record Breaking' singer, well that is what he is until somone else breaks the record.

He could also be tagged 'Aria Award' winner, 'Mo Award' winner, 'Variety Club' award winner, 'Gospel Music Australia' award winner, 'AMV Australia' award winner...I can go on if you like. ;)

He has had rave reviews from his concerts and shows ... the latest from M/C Magazine on his performance with the SSO quotes:

"His surprisingly strong voice resonated throughout the piece and I’m sure he left a few mouths open in surprise at such beauty."

He is one of Australia's most awarded, most recognised and most in demand entertainers.

David Campbell has been refered as 'King Of Swing' or 'Swing Senastion' for as long as Anthony has been called 'Record Breaking Pop Star'...perhaps he needs an update too ;)

Sorry about that. Someone was asking me to find an address on the Internet as they were racing out the door to get to where they were going before it closed - excuses, excuses - I was distracted.

guise84 - that link doesn't seem to work.

Who is the John Paul Young to whom you refer?

The JPY, well-known in Australia, is 58, not 32.

Here is an interesting review of a recent performance by John Paul Young (who is 32 years of age).

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
What I asked, a couple of posts ago, was whether or not, on You Tube, there was a recording of Anthony Callea singing a song from the Frankie Valli era?

You can find on You Tube recordings of David Campbell singing in many different styles (or genres as they say these days). At the moment he is making his money from being a Swing singer, but his real forte is cabaret and musical theatre. Besides having a good voice, he is the master of interpretation and of paying proper respect to the meaning of the words. His beginnings were with the Sydney Theatre Company (from the age of about 18) and first won awards for acting. Singing came later. He has had rave reviews and awards for all of his stage performances, both in Australia and in New York.

Anthony is still and per sempre, Anthony. Whether or not he can act is yet to be seen (and Yes, he was in Rent). He is always introduced as being the record breaking "The Prayer" singer, but that was some years ago now. He needs some more recent and larger successes , beyond his fans, and with the general public. I wish him well. If he gets the Frankie Valli role and makes his name on a wider stage that will be great.

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
That David Campbell is a better singer than Anthony Callea is a matter of opinion/taste...some may agree with you, I certainly don't.

Far from being a 'one hit wonder' Callea has achieved

three no.1's,
one no.3.
one no.5.
two no.9
one no. 10 and
one no.19 releases.

Everything he has released has made the top 20, something very few artists, and certainly very, very few Australian artists can claim.

As to his height, the Idol Bio simply made an error,a typo, something easily done, but once out there, almost impossible to retract... - they hit one wrong key and typed 158cm instead of 168cm....still short, but hardly the 'midget' status some try to have people believe.

John Lloyd Young, who originated the role on Broadway is not Italian, no, but he does look it.

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
Don't know that much about Callea but he seemed a pretty good singer to me from what I saw on It Takes Two. Isn't David Campbell the one who sang a bit of JOKs Shout on the grand final night? That was shocking. He wound himself up and yelled for as long as he good. It wasn't singing, it sounded like air being let out of a balloon.

Loved the final night overall though. Thought it was very entertaining.

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
Yes, but David Campbell is a better singer than Anthony. Anthony is, as yet, a one hit wonder - (and his own publicity says that he is 5ft 2ins).

I don't think that the man who played Frankie Valli on Broadway, to great acclaim, was Italian (?)

Re:Frankie Valli and the Jersey Boys Reply to this message
David Campbell is too old, too tall, too broad and too caucasian to play a young, short, slimly built Italian.

Anthony is not, by the way 5'2'...he's closer to 5'5".

Anthony Callea does have a very strong tenor voice, with beautiful falsetto, he can sing in multipart harmony and he can sing ,as Marina Prior says, "ANYTHING!!" but I imagine he'll be either tied down with Wicked, or busy touring his own concerts by the time Jersey Boys makes it's run.
