Tweety - nice response. And what you say regarding originality is, of course, true.

But do you know what chaps my ass so much about Heroes? The wasted potential. The first half of season one was fantastic. And I felt it just went downhill following the episode where Claire's Dad was shot and his memory was wiped.

I feel this show could be so much more, and it frustrates me that it isn't delivering on that potential.

BTW.... if you haven't read Watchmen, I suggest you do so at your next possible opportunity. It is a bona fide work of genius (that's not hyperbole either - I honestly believe Alan Moore is a literary genius) that operates on so many levels - murder mystery, cold war allegory, deconstruction of the superhero genre... and it is a bl00dy good read to boot. It is also the only graphic Novel to make Time Magazine's 100 greatest novels of all time.

<end gush>

At the end of the day you can draw comparisons between different things, but each thing will be unique in some way. There's nothing really truly 100% original. In some way, in some form or another, the idea will have been explored. It's possible that somewhere someone has an original idea that hasn't been done before, but it's very rare to see something that is completely original. Someone somewhere will have thought of it first. And if they weren't the ones to think of it, they were inspired by something else that influenced the way in which whatever it is they're doing is done. So, there's really no point drawing comparisons, except to say that it's already been done before, everyone has their own opinions though, it would be a very boring world if everyone thought the same.

Back to the whole originality issue; this doesn't mean that there can't be original material, there can be, but in some way it will be similar to something that's already been done before and will cause meaningless arguments such as the one here that will only return to the same points again and again.

So, in conclusion, you think what you think, I think what I think, let's call it a day, and call the whole thing off, because there's no point even continuing to argue about something when the both of us obviously are never going to agree about it.

THE END.

[quote]The story of Watchmen is predicated on the villain's plot to unite humanity by orchestrating a mass-destruction event that levels New York City.

The Story of Heroes Season 1 is predicated on the company's plot to unite humanity by orchestrating a mass-destruction event that levels New York City.

Hmmm... no similarity at all. It's a rip off, pure and simple.[end quote]

It's not a rip-off pure and simple. It's not pure and simple at all. Why? There's so many differences in the plots.

Other than this plan to destroy New York City what can you say is similar? Nothing. That's what.

Heroes is about a bunch of people who are just discovering that they've got these special abilities that make them unique among their peers. They're related to other people who have/had powers (some similar) in the past, and in some cases their powers are just part of an evolutionary genome that is present within their dna makeup. These people come together as a result of their new found abilities or as a result of being persued by those who would wish to cause them harm (the Company and Sylar). Season 1 is about trying to stop Sylar because Isaac paints a picture of New York exploding and is also about stopping Sylar from becoming too powerful and stopping his killing spree.

There are many facets to the Heroes storyline that set it apart from Watchmen. If anything it's a rip-off of X-men. Peter = Rogue, Claire = Wolverine, Mohinder = Prof.X, etc...

but hey we all see things differently i guess, and to each his own.

>>This shouldn't be a Heroes Vs Lost thing, both shows are good, people simply expect too much from a show, perhaps if you look at it from the perspective of a writer, it's actually pretty complicated to tell so many people's stories at the same time as coherently as Heroes and Lost are doing. >>

Tweety.... I'm a writer, so I do come at it from the wrier's perspective.

Actually, you can use LOST as an example of how to write a serialised, multi-character ensemble thriller and you can use Heroes as an example of how not to.

The writing quality on both shows is poles apart, and I guarantee it's got nothing to do with the writer's strike.

And to Mr Rekshun,

Upon researching Watchmen, on wikipedia I see no similarities between it and heroes, the whole premise is completely different.

As for Season 2/Volume two, i thought if there were more time for them to plot out the stories of each character before the writers' strike then there would have been more sense to the stories that began at the start of the season.

Such as Hiro in Japan or the Maya/Alejandro story.

All up though I thought they did an ok job with the time they had.

Re:Heroes Season 2 Reply to this message
Yeah... Last night's ep was probably the best of this season so far.

I can't help but fel that the major developments last night's episodes could have been introduced much earlier. At least there is a clear direction for the plot now.

Re:Heroes Season 2 Reply to this message
Luckily tonight was a vast improvement! The foundations they've laid so far seem kinda lame : the black oil-like virus and the brother and sister, Molly having way too many lines (not to mention Parkman and Mohinder as her dads!), Hiro in ancient Japan (which was a little too comical)..

Tonight it was serious business and we got an interesting new direction.

The writers' strike is a bit worrying though..

Heroes Season 2 Reply to this message
Heroes Season two has really gone down the gurgler. I'm seriously on the verge of switching off. Actually.... I think it started going down hill around the middle of season 1... but season 2 has committed the worst sin a show like this can.... it's boring.

I read a recent interview with creator Tim Kring, who has acknowledged that the quality of Season 2 has sagged and he's taking measures to fix it.... so maybe I'll give him a chance. But it'll wanna pick up soon.
