| I think they might be referring to something similar to the situation that happened here in Melbourne a few years ago when we had a G20 type of meeting (I can't remember the actual name of it). It was politely suggested in the media that people should cover up on the beaches during the conference so as not to offend the guests from countries that don't allow bikini's and the like. |

And since when has a genuine Muslim been allowed to wear Beach attire? I thought it was against their cultural beliefs? Isn't that a known fact?
No! That is an assumption in that little mind of yours. |

| Well i suggest you go and talk to some "GENUINE" Muslims and ask them that! What is a 'genuine' muslim anyway? You do know that not all muslims wear Burqa's you know! Go and talk to some Muslim people and you will see that they are actually very passionate people and have a lot of interesting things to say about their religion. And no. Not all of them have to cover up there bodies. |

'Qtewitdbooty, I can't see where I demonstrated racism!'
You didn't. You've just been stating sad, but true realities. |

Qtewitdbooty, I can't see where I demonstrated racism!
I know a lot of different ethnic people thank you!
If you had of read properly, we were discussing how Australians are in fact very accepting as opposed to some other countries, yet people still think we are not!
We are so multicultural, so not sure what you are on about!
And since when has a genuine Muslim been allowed to wear Beach attire? I thought it was against their cultural beliefs? Isn't that a known fact?
Can't we pass on our comment about some that don't want to adapt to the Australian way of life? |

I once heard of someone being spat on in Egypt because what she was wearing was not acceptable, so she was spat on!
We allow Muslims to pray 5 times a day (I know this as I worked for a Company that allowed it, which just goes to show how accepting we're) - we don't harrass them!
Many suburbs/towns are being taken over, and as Australians do you see us rioting against them, imagine we did it in ther country!
knevillebartos - I guess it annoys me when they whine of the apparent treatment, yet Australian's are not as severe as other countries!
Anyway that's my rant! |

Platona - I don't think you are racist at all.
That's my whole point, we are so accepting of other cultures we are forgetting about our own. I could not walk around Egypt in shorts or singlets could I? Or if I got arrested in a muslim country I bet there'd be no bible for me like we have the koran for them |

knevillebartos - yeah it appears that happens on Bondi Rescue!
As for the Muslim race, I'm not being racist, I just can't see it working well in a Coastal Town, covered all up!
Also, my point before was that Australians are accepting, we may rant & rave but why not? Look we can't ven get into Egypt without adoptng to their customs... or as a matter of fact, anywhere in the Middle East... Also some Asian countries as well! So overall we're pretty accepting! |

Well from my experience when I see a Muslim at the Beach they don't look very comfortable! As their culture is to cover up, how can you see this fitting into a Aussie soapie?
Ok, come on yell at me!!!
Perfect point. No yelling necessary. Just look at the Cronulla riots. Who goes to the beachs with jeans and sneakers?
As for the Chinese family, you just have to watch Bondi Rescue and the like to see Asians beaches do not mixed |

Pfff, so many people complain about Australia, yet they're the first to put their hand up to move here, and to reap the rewards this country has to offer!
Yeah we may be slightly racist if we feel our country is being taken over, but compared to the rest of the world, we aren't too bad!

Well, how about the way Australia treats Aborigines? And the White Australia policy, that kept everyone that wasn't white out. It's easy to be part of the mainstream and think that Australia is not racist. It has a really bad image overseas, but people in Australia kid themselves and think that it's all OK. How about the latest round of riots where Indian students are so angry at the racism that they're telling people at home not to come to Oz to study (which brings in big revenues for Oz).
And who says that Muslims don't go to the beach? A lot of the places they live are surrounded by beaches. That's kinda a culturally ignorant thing to say. These are the kind of stereotypes that need to be broken down. I guess H&A is probably not the forum to do it, it's only a soap. |

I don't think Australia are not as racist as you think! Put it this way, we allow different cultures into our country all the time! That doesn't sound racist to me! Other countried would not allow that, or we'd have to agree to their custom... when they come here, they follow their own custom!
I don't like the idea of a Muslim family in H&A... I'm not racist, but it is the Beach culture, they just wouldn't fit in! |

| The muslim family idea is a good one. I'm not saying they need to bring a whole heap of cultures in, but bringing a family or even a character in and addressing the race issue would be great. |

| I think they should introduce a muslim family, and raise some awareness there. But, despite the White Australia Policy being abolished quite some years ago, Aust is still predominantly white and most immigrants are from the UK. I do think they could have more non-white characters yes, but like I said before it would be impossible to represent every single one, especially all at once. |

| Australia has some real problems with its image as a racist country overseas. Bringing some multiculturalism in and addressing some of these race issues would be awesome, especially as H&A appears to pride itself on being topical. Racism has been an issue for a long time, it's quite amazing that it hasn't been covered yet. Btw, Australia has only been so white for so long because of the White Australia policy. Just cos there's more white people than others in Oz doesn't mean they shouldn't introduce other cultures onto the show. The country obviously has longstanding issues about people of other colours, would be a great thing to look at this on H&A. The latest non-white people on H&A are Jai, who escaped the tsunami (and doesn't even talk about his heritage), and the Indonesians who were people smuggled. Wouldn't it be nice to have non-white people come in who weren't just portrayed as "victims"? |
