Its still a small number, yes... but if we are going to talk about ethnic groups, and their fair representation on HAA, then where does it end? Fact is, the producers base their characters on what sells best locally and overseas, and sadly what does sell is not your average Aussie, or your average non-white Aussie.

Is that still not a small number? I would guess that they are probably a little bit wary of writing storylines for them as they might run into criticism about the way they are represented, I think this is an issue for all miniority groups(except the gay who they aren't bothered about offending).

proportionally there are as many Indigenous actors as a representative of the total ATSI population.

Aaron Pedersen was on MDA Ch2.

It was Luke Carroll who played Dr. Lewis Rigg

This has been debated many times on these boards. There have been somed indigenous characters... the doctor Jluo mentioned being one and many years ago, there was a park ranger. Things to bear in mind, many places around Australia there are simply very few or no indigenous Australians living. Also, there arent many indigenous actors in this country.

I think Jai is Australian but of some other non white ethnic background. Miles meet him in Phuket, I originally thought that he lived there but now I guessing his family were on holiday. So maybe his parents were Thai.

I'm trying to recall more details about Jai to be honest but my mind has gone blank.

Jagged: the PC term now is Indigenous when referring to the collective and Aboriginal when differentiating between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

I agree, I can't recall an Indigenous cast member. Can anyone remember who has appeared on HAA, who identifies as ATSI?

They have had a couple of Aboriginal actors on the show in the past, I remember and Aboriginal doctor on the show, I think he had a short term relationship with Rachel And a couple of others way back.. But yes i see where you are coming from it should be more balanced..

It seems sort of weird. Hopefully in the future we'll see a more balanced approach to representing your actual population.

i think they should have Aboriginals on the show. I know they have Jai, but still. They have managed to have a few different characters from different cultures over the years, but to be honest i dont think they have had an Aboriginal character.

Re:Aboriginals/Indigenous People on H&A Reply to this message
Not enough aboriginal actors?
Cannot think of stories to integrate them into the show?
Do not want to come into criticism due to the way they portray them?
General disinterest?

Just a few suggestions.

I was looking at an official Australian website(I think it was WA and NT state sites) and they don't use the word "aboriginal" - is that not PC anymore or just fallen out of favour for some reason. Not that there is much in a name but I was curious.

Aboriginals/Indigenous People on H&A Reply to this message
Just wondering why there aren't any aboriginals on Home and Away.

Do people of Aboriginal/Indigenous descent have much representation on Australian television in general? (I'm from Canada)

Does anyone have any opinions on this? It just seems like Australia as represented on H&A anyway is just a compilation of white people.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy the show, it's just that most of the shows I watch are from Canada & US where there seems to be a bit more of a mix when it comes to representing their populations. (though still a high level of concentration on hot people lol)
