Can't wait to watch Leeanne's routine. Pretty sure her choreography will be amazing! Pity she couldn't choose her own music...

Burn The Floor – are you a student of Leeanne's too? We’d know one another then...

And yeah, next week Leeanne's choreographing a Quickstep. Pity she's been stuck with a horrible song, but she's a genius with ballroom routines. I'm looking forward to it.

Re:Leeanne Bampton Reply to this message
By learninig the foundation steps in each dance be it Rumba cha ,cha other Dances evening 3 step Pride of Erin by getting the routines fairly correct & adding the I dont know the correct names cross over back cha cha spin back cha cha ect Cha Cha in the first place especially if you dance with a regular partner & stay by the routines can really be I find enjoyable cause then you get to know the routines really well less mistakes you get to know the steps refine your moves yes that false smile becomes bigger when you make a mistake I believe you need some foundation to create less mistakes & to me make the dance to me more enjoyable. If you keep changing the routines how do you not make more mistakes through confusion ..

Re:Leeanne Bampton Reply to this message
Ahh smithey a kindred spirit.
I get just a little tired of this 'gap' created between comp dancers and social dancers. When I was dancing both socially and competititvely I really enjoyed the social aspect (as well as the competitions) and I must say that some of the 'social' dancers were more considerate, better at leading and dare I say it better dancers and had in some cases better floorcraft than comp dancers who had their routine and that was what they danced, over and over again. Not much fun.

I do still go and watch comps and get a little sad that the younger competitors in some case look as if they are doing a 'drill' and the smile is sooo false. Break their routine and they are in trouble.

Guess this is going to provoke an avalanche of @!$?*
but that's my view and yes I am mature aged and its different now - but its not necessarily better.

Re:Leeanne Bampton Reply to this message
I agree with you Tina, when i was dancing in the late 70's 80's they had social comps as well like mother son , father daughter all boy and all girl,i was the only guy to get dressed up and one girl did so they put a special dance on for the two of us, you had fun but still worked to create the best possible stance ect, while going to the comps with puplis and sitting back and watching it's too strict these days.
It's good in one way but not in others as the kids of today are not having the enjoyment that we had.
I'll most likely be called old fashioned, thats ok too. I'm not taking anything away from these kids they deserve all they can get, go for it' and enjoy your dancing i still do.

Re:Leeanne Bampton Reply to this message
$15 per class I believe (so, $30 if you do both the ballroom and latin classes).

Starts 7 pm Mondays and Wednesdays. If you're a reasonably experienced dancer, Wednesdays is the more advanced class.

Re:Leeanne Bampton Reply to this message
Don't get me wrong, I think social dancing is great for people who don't wish to compete. It's just that it's from an entirely different world - I know I for one am a horrible social dancer.

What I was trying to say is that Leeanne could turn off social dancers because she is overly technically focused. A typical group class of hers is around 75% drills. This isn't to say she isn't fun and her classes are like some kind of boot camp, because they're not, it's just that Leeanne is very much a perfection teacher, not a "lets go have giggles" teacher.

Again not that I have a problem with people simply enjoying dance. This is just why I think some people don't enjoy Leeanne's teaching style.

Re:Leeanne Bampton Reply to this message
Matt sorry but I think you are being a tad precious about social dancers and stereotyping can be a bit off putting.

I actually think there is a place for social dancers who want to learn steps and muck up on the floor and leave the rest of us who want to do battle with getting the technicalities and precision of footwork etc right - to have our own style of fun.

Watching some people on the comp floor these days it looks like they don't enjoy themselves or gain that absolute pleasure of dancing anymore, yet at the 'social time' at the comps you see people laughing having fun, stuffing up the steps and arms etc but enjoying themselves.

I think for some it has just got all too serious. I used to be a dreadful student, especially in group classes, mucked up something rotten but my teachers, all highly professional used to encourage the laughter especially when we were learning hard stuff. It broke the tension. Private lessons were different I worked my socks off but was still able to laugh and enjoy the pleasure of the dance, and it paid off in the results we got both in comps and medals. Judges notice that stuff too.

Ok will get off my hobby horse and go sparkle elsewhere now

I have been learning since I was tiny but still class myself as a social dancer and must admit, I flounder on the dance floor especially after a few reds.

Re:Leeanne Bampton Reply to this message
Pfft. Wait until I write her biography. :-)

Most any serious dancer who has had lessons with Leeanne loves her and the studio. It's like a second home to most of us. I can see why more social dancers might be a bit put off though, since she's very much about being technically precise to the nth degree and choreography comes a very distant second in her class. Which is how it should be, but social dancers are more interested in learning a bunch of steps and going out and floundering on the social floor once a week (there's a rare exception of course).
