I dont think CH would beat Underbelly - I'm saying it doesn't have the same audience.

Personally I don't need to watch that kind of "reality" when I've already experienced - in real "reality" - more than enough of the results of greedy selfish idiots like the thugs portrayed in Underbelly. They are revolting enough in real life why on earth would I want to see actors pretending to be them?

But I know there are a lot of people out there who think it's all terribly fascinating and love all the smut, "true-to-life" violence and filthy behaviour etc.

Me, I'd rather watch paint dry. And that's my point. People who like CH are not necessarily the same people who would bother with Underbelly and vice versa.

I think CH is a solid niche show that deserves to be supported and given air time but only appeals to a particular kind of viewer. Because it's not a mass appeal show the programmers bin it regardless of it's quality.

Underbelly is a lowest-common denominator show that appeals to the masses. So it will always get airtime, regardless of it's quality.

The Mentalist, however, is a completely different scenario again. Dropping either of these shows is stupid but dropping the Mentalist is just plain lunacy.

City Homcide would not beat Underbelly in the ratings. As much as I love CH, Underbelly is immensely popular. I don't watch it but it has taken Aussie viewers by storm. It's raw, hard drama, and it's based on true events. Sunday nights is not a problem for me, and neither should it be for anyone else. If you are busy Sunday, then tape it. We can't change the programming, only keep on top of the programs we watch so not to miss them.

Seems to me that their decision-making doesn't depend on ratings - Nine are apparently removing The Mentalist which is enormously popular and, like I said, one of the top raters in the US. It doesn't make sense to can it now when it's only just started here.

BTW Underbelly is rubbish IMHO and appeals to a vastly different kind of viewer than CH does so I don't think that is an issue. If there was no CH on Sunday - and nothing else worth watching I'd switch the tv off rather than watch something as crass as Underbelly.

Changing CH to Sunday night was NOT a good idea! It always rated well on Monday, regardless of the opposition, but Seven made a gift of that timeslot to Nine's Underbelly II, instead of giving them some competition!

It started out great, but lately I find it more boring and predictable. I think it's run its course and Ch 7 realises it.

I can not believe it city homicide is an absolute top show produced here in Oz with fine OZ actors and they want to take it off. It is probably one of the handful of commerical tv programs i watch and love. Please keep this on it is way better than all the other drivel that is shown

WHAT??? ARE YOU SERIOUS????

The Mentalist is one of America's highest rating tv shows!!! And one of my absolute "must sees"

And City Homicide is the only Australian crime series currently on tv and/or worth watching.

Why aren't they supporting Aussie productions (not to mention Aussie actors doing well overseas)????

Are they completely insane???

Where does this appalling info come from?

The Australian free-to-air television networks do not show many top quality programs, only a few are first-class.

It is with incredulity that I read that Channels 9, 7 and 10 are considering axing first rate programs. I refer first to the excellent Ch 7 Australian crime drama City Homicide. If there was one show I would watch besides the footy, it would be this one.

City Homicide has excellent crisp scripts, credible plots, great acting by a
really top cast, including Shane Bourne; sharp editing and is hugely entertaining.

What’s wrong with programmers and executives? Have they lost the plot?

What about The Mentalist, a different drama from the US with Australia’s Simon Baker? This show is mooted for dropping too, as is Backyard Blitz. Scott Cam is very Oz, but many people enjoy home improvement.

Other shows due for axing are debatable, but the public is generally being treated as viewing fools subject to programming censorship by time-slot faux pas rather than ratings integrity.

This could be early-warning shots across the bows of free-to-air TV (despite proposed new channels) in favour of cable and satellite. I hope they take note that some viewers are not impressed.
