Changing songs and not sticking to the theme has always been something that happens. I think the parameters are set looser so that the contestants can display some creativity - for example Hayley's 2nd song or Stan's version of Single Ladies (as the original is not a big band/jazz song). Some of the contestants change it so they can sing in their preferred style, give a better performance and get votes.

The Idol contestants did not really stick to the spirit of last night's show theme of "Stage and Screen" music.

Movies & broadway conjures up images of big numbers from stage shows such as Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Oklahoma, Cabaret and so on.

But what did we get? One song from Carosel and one from Phantom of the Opera and the rest were from "pretend" stage musicals - i.e. the style of musiclal that is cobbled together from existing back catalogues of material and brought to the stage, more as money spinning revivals.

We ended up with three songs from "We Will Rock You", something from "The Jersey Boys", something from "Dusty", and assorted existing tracks that were used in the background of films.

This is hardly embracing the theme. Producers/Judges should stipulate the theme and its parameters a little more tightly so that contestants cannot weazle out of it by singing numbers that are blatantly recycled pop tunes and not tunes written specifically for the stage or screen.

A very disappoinitng show indeed.
