| Mental illness is a very debilitating and serious issue. Depression can literally suck the life out of a person who feels there's no point in going on. Despite the good intentions of family and friends, there is very little they can do as they don't have the knowledge or understanding on how to approach the person concerned....except to be there for support. The person themselves MUST want to get better and take the advice of the professionals no matter how deep the hole may seem at the time. Medication can have some benefits, but getting the right one is often a long and tiring process, especially when the sufferer sees no immediate improvement. As mental illness is something we can't actually see, it is very misunderstood and I feel sad for those who continue to suffer. |

| I've just watched his acting today too - it is sad to think he's no longer with us, yet he's full of energy on our screen. I'm sure many people would have helped him if they were aware of his condition - that's the sad story behind depression - not many people know of it until it's too late. |

| I have to disagree with you SilverPink.. I suffer from depression AND I also work in mental health. Unfortunately many people come into hospital and expect you to magically take away their problems. Im not saying that you are like this but a surprisingly large number of people do. I try my hardest to assist my patients, without thanks usually , to help them get well and stay well....and many totally disregard what they have learned whilst in hospital. When some are are discharged they dont keep their out patient appointments, dont take their medications and some often go back to abusing drugs. And then wonder why they end up back in hospital. This is frustratingly common. Yes, services are severely lacking but dont blame the psychiatrists, nurses and counsellors, most of whom try their best with an under-resourced system that is bursting at the seams. If you want to blame someone, blame the government who do not put enough $$ into mental health.... as a consumer who was hospitalised with depression, and being on the other side of the fence, my eyes were opened. But the thing I realised was that unless I wanted to help myself, the best psychiatrist in the world was of no use to me. Blaming other people for my problems was also useless as there was no-one to blame, not even me. I was unlucky. My road to recovery was not easy, but I got there. Thanks to my desire to get better and the help I received. I dont know your experience with mental health, and yes I agree, there are plenty of practioners out there that should not be practicing. I know I have worked with some of them ! But we are not all the same. There are bad eggs in all walks of life, sadly. But, statements like "in it for the money' are naive and insulting. If I was all about money, I would not be a nurse. | I think Neesa and Melissa are right about psychiatrists and councilors.There really is not much help out there.Every one of these so-called helpers that i've been to for help were either corrupt or the type of stuff that comes out of their mouth are the type of stuff that they should get the sack for.In other words they treated me horribly and they were not there to help anyone, they were just in it for the money.What the hell is going on in this disgusting world?There is no such thing as anyone being there to help you, you can only help yourself. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| It is pretty insensitive what soysauce and sushi has said.You should try to understand Sushi that some of the people on here were bigger fans of Mark's than you and i were and i've mostly gotten over it.If you weren't a big fan of his it wouldn't effect you as much as it does them.Also some of them are going through the same thing that he was going through.Think of how you would feel if you were a big fan of someone famous who died or killed themselves.I know how i would feel and i would never get over it.I don't think you would be too quick to get over it either. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| I still can't believe that he's gone!! I'm still crying each time I think about it!!!! He was only a couple of years older than I am and had the world at his feet. It's true, there really isn't any councilor, Psychiatrist, Mental Health units or anything that can really help depression. it's an up and down thing. When you really need to tell some one how you feel, you can't. Because they're not there at that exact time that you really need them. I know how you feel Neesa. I'm 30 and have M.S also. The heat is hell and the depression is the worst. It's so hard to get my mother to fully understand my disease and she refuses to look it up. I've had it for 7 years now and just recently spent a month in Fairfield Nursing Home where I shared the place with no one under 50 and all had either dementia or Alzheimers. I was in hospital from 18th Aug till christmas and it was my Mother who told me about Mark's suicide on the Saturday. I broke down crying as I had asked her to do me a simple favour whilst I was in hospital. Tape All Saints as being on the Disability Support Pension, I couldn't afford the television hire in the hospital. She taped 1 episode. and that was it. I was in there from August till December and she couldn't do me that one favour!! Each Tuesday night I'd call her and remind her but she never did. If anyone has the episode numbers that I have missed so I can look them up please let me know. I desperately want to catch up to all the episodes I have missed. Rest in Peace, Mark. I do hope you feel no more pain and are in the loving embrace of family members you may have lost in the past and that your family knows that it really wasn't their fault and that there was really nothing that they could do. |

| I suffer from depression and often think that I would be better off dead. You say go to your Family Doctor, they know nothing about treating severe depression? I have a Psychiatrist, but he is useless? I used to go to a Private Hospital, until I became suicidal and now they refuse to admit me? My depression is caused by my having MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, all the sites you quote are good for young people, but when you are a 52 year old female confined to bed and living in a NURSING HOME, then you tell me that SUICIDE isn't a better option? | I wasn't even a huge fan of his but i did like him enough, he was so sweet on the show. I've been crying about it too. It reminds me of my own depression that i went through. I only saw a little bit of the show last night and only saw Dan for a minute so i didn't notice how sad he looked like some of the others have been saying.But i did see the tribute at the end by John. I can't bear to watch a full episode with Mark in it, it's just too sad. I don't think i can really watch it any more especially after he's no longer in it. | MARK'S sudden death shocked me & sadden me, He was a fabulous actor, and his on screen marriage was a HUGE success. He seems such a lovely guy. | I can't believe he killed himself.That's an even more serious way to die. I feel so sorry for his fans and everyone else that was close to him. I don't know what i'd do if any of my favourite stars died. | I cried and cried - poor family, poor Mark, who could have known what his heart harboured except for those who have gone before us with such anguish. You left us with the persona of someone we could only hope to be and someone we all wish to know. Thanks for being there Mark. You will be remembered. | Dear Seek & Destroy. I totally agree with you. Is so strange, as I don't know Mark Priestly, but as I religiously watch All Saints every week (& have done since it started) you feel as if you know the characters and they are a part of your life. Dan is such a great character and from what I saw of Mark when he was in Perth for Telethon, he has the same sincere, gentle nature. Is just so sad that such a talented actor was in such a dark place and tragic that nobody could help him. He will be sadly missed by his All Saints fan, but even more so, his poor family & cast mates. | To libbyfletcher: Your words could be used in an advert about depression on the telli...."Don't hide in the shadows and let this beast consume you....Get Help!" I like those words very much. I think we need adverts on the telli about what Depression is...the signs/symptoms...where to get help...and how to support someone. The general public needs educating - the lack of knowlege about what depression is and its causes is a major factor for it having so much stigma attached to it. Whilst the topic of depression remains something of a taboo in our society we will continue to lose precious people from this horrid illness. The media is a great tool in getting people's attention. So how about it - write to them (who them is..I am not quite sure) and put your words to them. Them...maybe the health department - maybe your local member of parliament for starters. Your words could be used as a great ending to the advert. I'm serious. I can just see the billboard now on the roads: "Depression: the Silent Killer - Don't hide in the shadows and let this beast consume you...GET HELP! | to: sharksarecute. I too am outraged about the ignorance about Depression out there in the world. But you work in mental health - so your disbelief surprises me. I do not work in mental health but have spoken to many who do, as well as sufferers of depression, and others who like me have a family member suffering with this illness. Perhaps you could do something about it - perhaps you are in a better position to be heard - more so than the general public - in actively promoting education about depression in the community. This could begin with answering the question "What is depression and what are its causes?" Just a suggestion. I realise though too that we all have the power to make change and do something about wrongs in our world that we feel strongly about. I am very saddened and angry too about this recent murder by Depression of such a young talented man. I have my own thinking cap on about what I might do in my own community. I fortunately am not a sufferer but a mother of a daughter who suffers depression and the one you are talking about - due to chemical imbalances" But what can we do about this we need to ask ourselves. We need to campaign to educate the general public about what Depression is and what signs to look out for in others and also what to do and what not to do when supporting someone with depression. If Mental Health are not going to do it - then those who are educated need to start educating others in their own communities.
