So where do the Eaglets go from here!? With a growing number of walking wounded, a young list and an early pre-season really over the next 8 games they can expect howls of derision from the opposition benches! A bit like a parody of Keating and Costello but, at least a bit more decorum than the Taiwanese Pollies, almost!
Those playing in the WAFL this weekend, pushing claims to hop into the unpredictable Tabbies of Punt Road, Richmond are;

Swan Districts - Tony Notte
East Fremantle - Josh Kennedy, Matt Spangher, Jamie McNamara
Claremont - Chad Jones, Eric Mackenzie, James Thomson, Pat McGinnity
Perth - Scott Selwood, Will Sullivan
South Fremantle - Callum Wilson
West Perth - Mark Seaby
Subiaco - Chad Fletcher
McKenzie, Selwood, McNamara will come under notice, Notte likely needs more time. West Coast will be anxious to get Kennedy back out there! Chad Jones is likely 1 or 2 weeks away and Hurn was kicked in the area that he broke his leg, so, back to the Moon Boot and therapy!
A win against Richmond is important. 1) Because they just aint that good, 2) Because they really aren't that good!
With a number of senior players pressing claims for their futures, it is likely West Coast will show a bit more over the next 8 weeks.
Of the next 8, at least 5 are winnable! The draw from Hades, thanks Dimwit, is all but over, 2009 beckons!

Who can forget watching your children settling into Kindie, playing Junior Footy or Netball, watching them grow from stumbling and earnest triers desperately wanting to please. It takes maturity, practice, experience to take them on confidently, but mostly, it takes faith and encouragement. Patience with mistakes and licence to chance their arms as they grow up.
Football teams are not a lot different, even at elite level. Learning and playing to a plan instead of instinct is difficult and easily forgotten in the heat of play. If they do learn their lessons well and the plan, lessons are good ones, they will succeed.
They may not be your Children, they may not please you as much with their success as a Child of yours does, but, even a Footy team that grows from the Cellar Dweller to a serious finalist gives you great pleasure! No matter how far off the pace they are, the die hards follow them and share the anguish and triumphs in equal measure,
That's Football!

That is what has worked for North Melbourne among others, they have had the courage and conviction in each others ability to take the opposition on, it will come!

And then you will lose to the Saints......LOL

Yep, I see that Priddis is saying he needs to work on some fundamentals like decision making and turnovers/effective disposals.
There is a lot of negative Press, delighted derision from opposition fans and a great deal of soul searching amongst the die hards for whom, winning is the only thing!
There are some real positives as well, for what is the 2nd youngest list & the least amount of exposure time, 2008 is indeed a steep learning curve, thus the title of the thread in the first instance. Might be interesting to read back through the posts at seasons end and see what/whom has stood up or, crashed and burned as some of us armchair critics have seen it. No matter who you are, how you envisage it unfolding on the Park, it rarely runs to script.
There is always that thing I have said to any Juniors I have been fortunate to assist or be a proud parent about, "How you train is how you play! If you keep working on the basics, play for each other and encourage each other, a team you become!" There is something I remember from my years as a Junior in Victoria and even before that, "A Champion Team will always beat a team of Champions!"
Football teams are grown and cultured, transition and development is not always a smooth transition, 2006/2007 was a critical phase with plenty of ups and, plenty of downs. The flight of the Eaglets will have a few falls yet, unlike the Pheonix which rises from the ashes in spectacular and immediate glory, first the Eagle needs to hunt. Like the wolf pack, in unison and complete trust, faith in each other. That is what has worked for North Melbourne among others, they have had the courage and conviction in each others ability to take the opposition on, it will come!

Re:Class of 2008 Reply to this message
I agree with jonah. There was way too much turnover in the midfield. Glass and Cox looked really fatigued. Nicoski made some crucial errors, some of which resulted in turnovers and goals for the Hawks. I didn't expect him to have such a poor game.

McKinley and Priddis impressed me, although both still have some improving to do, and this will come with time.

But again -- most were either too slow, fatigued or inexperienced.

Re:Class of 2008 Reply to this message
Some interesting comments, BD73, I know where you're coming from! As for getting "smashed" by 57 points, there are a number of factors considered! It wasn't the 100+ some plonkers were pushing as likely! Nor is there wholesale bloodletting as suggested likely to satisfy those that hate the club with an inexplicable savagery likely born in envy or some equally feeble tribal instinct.
There were positives, Kerr and Priddis accummulated 85 possies between them. I had no internet or TV coverage so have read or heard little about what else transpired apart from 4 gettable goals missed and 3 goals gifted in the early period = 42 points that would have made tiring bodies later in the game looking up a bigger hill. Sounds to me like the Hawks were lucky as much as West Coast have some learning to do! Apparently Buddy kicked a modest Bag and Roughead did a helluva lot more! I will go and read the reports, have had internet access for about 5 hours out of the last week and a bit, so, enjoy the weekend while the "Galley Slaves" toil for riches from the deep!

ok so we are having a lean year this year, but we have had a good peroid of being in the 8 most years..so missing 1 year isnt so bad, some teams takes them year to even get in the eight

Re:Class of 2008 Reply to this message
it seemed to me that there was too much turnover midfield.
wce couldn`t break through the tight defence, but 57 point loss was better than previos, if you can call a loss better

I hear Ruccioto (SP???) is being banded around a potential assistant.

SUnrise had on their newsbar that Voss was being signed up as well but that is surely a *** up as he is now tied in with Gold Coast

i think the coup behind getting rid of Micale was a way of eliminating a challenger to the emperor. tony should have got the job in the first place. john appointment was about marketing not coaching.

Re:Class of 2008 Reply to this message
Yep, well, always defended him as a FF despite the innacuracy because anybody kicking 100+ goals & 150 behinds in a Season is denying the opposition a lot of the footy! Admittedly there was an abundance of supply via Kemp, Matera, Bluey McKenna etc. but he still had to win the ball and ping it home! Personally I would have been tempted to run hin from CHF! Jason Ball the same, or at FF, as he played early on at Swans, kicked a long way.
As for kicking as many behinds as a "gun shearer", Shed Boss is a long way from Matinee Idol & I feel that the Coach is not necessarily the Duck's Family Jewels when it comes to being an ex star but more about the nous and Leadership style.
That's not to say some absolute Stars like Paul Roos, Malcolm Blight, Ron Barassi etc. don't make indelible impressions & achieve success, but, their on field exploits were not the basis for it! If Harry & Micale go, especially given their status at State level, you would think a new broom entirely! Bluey Mc. would be a healthy start! As for the "Preacher", that is a very "Judgelike" appointment, for some of us, he would be as popular as Michael Jackson at the local Daycare Centre!

Re:Class of 2008 Reply to this message
see Eagles are reported to be getting rid of their forwards coach and defence coach Harris and Micale .....

Hope this means Suma will be moved to orange peeler or sumfing cos he isn't doing to well with the midfield

West Australian is suggesting that Daniher might be a candidate to come in to the club in a similar role as connolly is to Dees, Shaw is to Freo, Balme is to Pies etc.........

EERY; a dread of seeing ghosts; wild; weird
I'll bet Priddis and Co. thought they were chasing ethereal shadows!

Eerie is more "common" modern days, but, may be confused with an Eagles nest, particularly when commenting on the West Coast, so EERY..
eery - Wiktionary

Re:Class of 2008 Reply to this message
Beg Pardon, thought he was there at the time, speaking of the Granny, can't remember if Darren Harris was playing or Coaching then, that last Granny he played in for West Perth, he was b...dy fantastic! Get to see even less WAFL than AFL these days!
Oh well...
If you take note of what Priddis said and what they did to Port in the '07 Granny, it was like a "Perfect Storm!" Their execution and understanding is masterful and eery. Ablett is like a Conducter of an Orchestra playing the "Danse Macabre'", few sides in an era approach that almost perfect state! The opposition can but seek to disrupt the continuity, Port failed, Richmond has failed, so too have others better credentialled. Among those there has been the Roos, who unleashed the Demon at Skilled in '07, even the best attempt to stop them, Sydney, has struggled. If they maintain this intensity, avoid injuries and stay outa V8 Commodores etc. they may well be a four legged monster, which might shut up that clamourous bunch!
Meanwhile, West Coast need to learn their lessons, eat their cold Humble Pie and earn the right to challenge. That is what character is all about!
