| Not forgetting of course that Larry's F1 career only ended because a driver with deeper pockets came along and those motorsport enthusiasts on this board would know what became of this well financed driver.... |

<TMF,,I think maybe I would place Larry ahead of Johnston..
Larry has more engineering brains,,and is/was a much more hands on developer..
Throw in the fact that Larry made it to F!,,and that seals it for me..
Sure,Larry never achieved success in F1,,but the mere fact he made it there,,would have placed him in the top couple of dozen drivers in the world..
Again,,perceptions..
"I may not agree with what you say..but I defend your right to say it "">
Well for the mere fact Larry made it to F1 Tom maybe he should be placed above the other three.
I dont buy that Brock was any better than Johnson or Moffat.
"I may not agree with what you say..but I defend your right to say it "" ???
Socrates Aristotle or Plato said that. Which one ?
Hang On! Peter Perfect seemed to consider himself a philosopher maybe it was him. |

Thats rough, cut Craig some slack!
Craig arrived when the AU Falcon was racing. At least he was up near the pointy end of the field.
Then to FPR in their early stages of development. |

People's private life have nothing to do with motor sport.
You would have to be a lunatic to invest your own money in a racing car. Those who do... go broke. I think D. johnson learned that lesson in 1980.
Johnson had some good sponsors like Palmer Tube Mill and Shell who did stick by him. But Ford never did much for him.
And if you want to talk about money... how about the multi-million dollars deal Ford made with Craig Lowndes... and he never won a race for them. |

Well he certainly wasn't the hard-up battler that he played up to the media so well
Even by the standards of the time Dick's workshop was well equipped and his house was in the middle to upper class and with backdoor support from Ford meant he wasn't really struggling for anything
Add to that some shrewd real estate investments through his mates like Alf Grant and he was living quite well away from the race track
*** was a talented steerer but a couple of his ATCC wins in the early 80's came at a time when drivers like Brock and Moffat missed multiple rounds of the ATCC because of other commitments |

I think Peter Brock could have made it in F1 if he had been given the chance.
Perkins came back in Australia in 1978... flat broke.
Someone told him to go and see Moffat... who handed him a cheque to buy himself an engine.
Perkins helped Brock develop the cars on the HDT team in the early 80's.
Perkins was only a late starter because he did not had the money. If he had stayed in Australia during the seventies... he probably would have made himself a name much early on. |

But Larry Perkins only made it big as a team driver in the nineties.
------------------------
He did have a much later start in the V8's than the other guys..
I have a big soft spot for Larry,,both as engineer and driver..When Larry had the evil eye on,,he was a bloody fearsome driver..His ability to build a good race car is beyond question..
Look,,on any given day,,and with any superiority of equipement,,all the drivers we have been talking about could deliver the goods..
I only mentioned Larry's F1 experience to point out the level his driving had reached..
Could any of the tin toppers we are talking about,,reach that level??
And Larry achieved most of these pinnacles,,with literally the seat out of his pants !!! |

Well... we are talking different categories here.
Larry Perkins would be number one from an engineering point of view.
But Larry Perkins only made it big as a team driver in the nineties.
Wether you are in motor racing, music, movies or anything else... the making of a legend is in its longevity in one category. And you have to be doing it for 30 years in order to get the title. |

Nobody ever over rated D.Johnson... because the guy never did pretend to be something he was not.
I don't know if he is a legend...
But he surely rate third behind Brock and Moffat for his achievements as a privateer in the sport.
Larry Perkins would come fourth... and there is no-one else in that category. The days of a top gun driver with his own team are long gone. |
