Some of his Jap drag DVD have GTR's pulling flat 6 sec pasts, with GTS pulling flat 8 sec passes.

It really does amaze me,some of the times that the tin tops can pull.. 45 years ago,Don Garlits was doig 12's in the states with a hemi fueller..Common thought then was that dragsters would hit the wall at 10 seconds...Well they are doing less than half of that now...In 1965,my EH with triple 45DCOE Webers, used to do 14.9..That was one quick car in its day,,but now it would be blown into the weeds by some stock, off the showroom floor car..
In the same period,,I stuffed a 148hp Holden grey motor into a Mk.1 Sprite(Bug eye)for hillclimbs...Couldn't get the thing to handle with all that weight up front,,so took it to the drags..Good for 13.9...Later,I removed the Holden and replaced it with a 1600 Cortina..That made it a good hillclimb car..

Thats a fair comment Tom regarding the weight of the 9" diff and the lose of some HP in just turning the units over.

I have knowen acouple of drag racers who purely use Salisburys, a lot less weight to turn and they were buying them cheap as from the wreckers. Get acouple of meetings out of it till they start cracking up and toss it.

I'll take your word regarding Volvo diff as i have had no experience with Volvo's, but nothing supprises me from the Europeans, especially these days with turbo diesels (I'm originally a Diesel Mechanic by trade)

Yes, you are spot on regarding the cooling system in the VL, leading to possible cracking through the cam tunnel, but a strong bottom end which includes a stud girdle as standard. My nephew is into the GTR's. Some of his Jap drag DVD have GTR's pulling flat 6 sec pasts, with GTS pulling flat 8 sec passes. The VL 3L engines are pretty much the same as a GTR bottom end.

A good friend of mine in Brisbane has just finished off his 1985 Corolla with a twin turbo 3L V6 300ZX engine in it. As far as the mainroads know it is a 2L LOL, but the engineers that approved it had a laugh knowing to well that it was a 3L engine. The engine output figures are showing a lovely 475HP from the engine and possible to tune it out to 650, all in a 800kg car. I cannot wait for my next trip to Brisbane for a run in the car. The man can build a good engine and has never failed me in race engines.

Mattack,,you seem to be a guy that has some brains and can put forward a logical debate..
The only reason that I mentioned Volvo diffs was to point out the inbuilt quality in the car..Yes,may people have used 9"diffs,for many years in many applications..Except for the drag racing fraternity,,anyone who uses the 9" for circuit work, will point out one big problem..The WEIGHT of the damn things..All unsprung weight, which has to be accomodated in the suspension redesign...A lot of guys have swapped to using Volvo diffs..I am not saying that they can handle as much torque as a 9",but for a lot of applications they are more suitable..What I was trying to say in a roundabout way,,is that the standard Volvo diff is far stronger that that which comes from the factory on a Ford or a Holden..I dont know about late model units,,been out of the game for a while...I can tell you,,I have mangled quite a few Salisbury's..
Yes ,,the Nissan motor in the VL's is a top donk..I had a Turbo..But it aint a Holden motor..Holden couldn't build something that good...A little fragile in the top end,re cooling problems,,but easily surmountable.. A top donk..I think I saw someone in Japan getting 1500 hp,with 50 plus pounds of boost..No Ford or Holden could suffer that punishment..
Your last paragraph is a fair statement.Agree..

Re:AMBROSE a true blue FORD champ Reply to this message
What model Volvo do you have?

When did differentials come into this? So what if the 9" diff was originally a truck component, what are you telling the thousands of people with them fitted to their Fords, Holdens, racing cars (drags, circuit, speedway) etc etc, that they are wasting their time and.....should get a Volvo diff? Not sure where you are going with that.

You said 'No aftermarket heads' but you did do some head cleanup. Regardless of buying a head already modified or getting your own done, it's still modifying from original. Just that doing it in house saves money. I’m sure if there was as many Volvo’s as there is Commodores, there would be more readily available performance heads

There are a number of engines like your Volvo that requires little or no work done to the bottom end due to their toughness. Well done if you have such an engine. The last Holden I raced was a VL with a 3L Nissan engine, very strong bottom end, the money was well spent on the top end

But as the years go on, you would assume that engine development would be for the better whether in performance, strength and reliability, now with modem day engines using injection, variable cams, turbo’s, high energy ignitions and easy to manipulate engine management systems. Go back many years and it was a rarity to see someone using turbos, now they are all over the place.

Yeah Tommy is the 1diot that wants to race in his VOLVO..
My mechanic mates thought that was the winner of the tooloftheweek comp...
See Tommy wanted to race on a winding road and wanted to "bang panels" with my 580hp XY Falcon.
When I told my mechanics they are still laughing...
Tommy says he owns a turbo6 Volvo?????
The problem is...HOW MANY RACE CARS HAVE 6 AIR-BAGS????As soon as you breathe on the Volvo the Air-bags would kick in and the engine immobiliser would render the car useless...
REAL SMART TOMMY...Maybe the HAT is on too tight

Seem to remember a Volvo cleaning up an Australian Touring Car title....And just to inject a little knowledge into your vacant cranium space ,,I'll give you a few facts about those motors...Slightly bigger turbo and intercooler,,Cylinder head cleanup,,,AND ABSOLUTELY,AS FROM THE SHOWROOM FLOOR,,A BOG STANDARD BOTTOM END..You see, playmoney boy,,quality is inbuilt with a Volvo...No aftermarket heads,,just up the boost and Volvo quality can handle it..
And besides the famed 9" Ford diff,,which was built for trucks, not cars,,show me another diff that can have real grunt put through it like a Volvo..Oh yeah,,and with as many ratios available....Go back to your "mechanic"mates,,and dont waste my time,,you bolt on go faster merchant...Your ignorance is only superceded by your stupidity...

Well Tommy, when u say "mediocrity" do you mean that it is an acceptable performance, "bundya r s e"

I am afraid,,35th place and 10 laps down,,doesn't even qualify for a mediocre tag...Lets just call that one,,p i s s poor..

Actually, with the exception of rallying, all motorsport is "roundy, roundy" when you think about it. I'd just ignore him, matt....most of the time, someone who bashes a thread is only looking for attention.

Qualifying is on tomorrow morning....about 2am or something I think....with the race taking place around 5ish. Don't quote me on those times though since I'm just guessing here, lol

Casey Mears is the defending race winner....and he took pole in the Cup race today so he appears to be on top of this track.

Re:AMBROSE a true blue FORD champ Reply to this message
Well atleast Marcos is having a go in a differant type of racing in a differant country to what he use to race, it's called 'getting out of your comfort zone' Maybe you should open the other eye or maybe Marcos should have driven for Holden to earn your respect.

Call yourself a racing fan Tommy, you don't show much of that at the best of times and if you find this topic not worthy of the little gray mater that you have then maybe you should not open this post and save yourself the grief!
