Why retire If your set to come back,Hingis tried it,and failed,Once you retire in Tennis, theres no returning to your former glory, just ask a guy named Borg,If Henin stays out of the game for a lengthy period, she can expect to get her ass whipped by players she would have brushed aside in her prime,Wonder what the real reason behind her retirement is,maybe one day we may find out.

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
According to this article, it seems the door to return for Henin might be open. But if that is so, then why would she have asked to be removed from the WTA rankings - it would make the return so much more difficult (although she is such a great player, she could probably catch up fairly quickly?)

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
Yeh, I'm still getting my head around it.
For me, very disappointing, but looking at her year so far, perhaps in retrospect, it was coming.
The great artist of womens tennis drops off the map.
Thanks Justine for the marvellous tennis skills you inflicted apon your opponents for all these years.
Always a joy to watch.

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
well it is not a case straight out. To quote from tyhat article :

"With top-ranked Justine Henin announcing her retirement, Sharapova is poised to move to No. 1 next week -- depending on if and when Henin asks the WTA Tour to remove her from the rankings"

At the moment she is 1709 points behind Justine I would have thought that she had to earn the spot.

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
Very sad day for women's tennis. Henin has been a wonderful champion. She has already lived three lifetimes in her 25 years, and that is bound to catch up with anyone.

I wish I could "burnout" as a multi-millionaire with seven GS titles!!!!

Yep she's gone and a loss to woman's tennis. We will miss her. Agreed Len I think she has chosen the perfect time. going out as the RG champion.

Agreed also about the eductaion commetn as well. I know JB plans to go back to Harvard as soon as he retires from the filed but hopefully that is some time off yet

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
Aye...rumours sometimes eventuate. The SMH Online story is listed here:
http://www.smh.com.au/news/tennis/world-no1-henin- announces-retirement/2008/05/14/1210444528820.html

Interesting to see that she has gone out as a French Open champion, rather than defend her title (whilst out of form). Nice touch IMHO.

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
Cripes. Based on those reports G, I am now ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED that Justine will retire! Perhaps they forgot to tell her that she was retiring as they needed a story to write on a slow sport day. Maybe they don't have Foxtel available and don't realise the Hamburg Masters is on.

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
Also interesting to note is the Williams sisters have over the years stated intentions to quit long before this year. Still going on, despite Venus having a somewhat forced sabbatical. Interesting G to read the comments about Justine - thanks for that info. She seems pretty balanced and somewhat philosophical with some of those comments. Good to see she acknowledges the further education item as well.

This latter point is a reason why I further admire folks like James Blake, Venus and Serena - education was a priority as well as tennis, as they all realise that tennis is fleeting and there is a life to live long afterwards. It is not often that one hears about professional athletes having hard earned (not honorary dispensed) higher education qualifications...skewing off topic, I know...but what thread doesn't ;-)....L

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
One Flemish newspaper, Het Nieuwsblad, citing "a reliable source", categorically stated that the 25-year-old will announce her immediate retirement from the game.

For the Vers l'Avenir newspaper group's internet site she plans to retire either now or after trying to defend her Roland Garros title or even after the Beijing Olympics.

On Tuesday La Derniere Heure suggested she would simply be taking time out for several months

Re:Henin set to retire Reply to this message
Until she actually does confirm any rumour by retiring, I will consider the article pure speculation. Wonder though if the media in Belgium are that bit more well informed than in a number of other countries, or just need a way to get some attention for Justine given her poor recent form.

As for burnout - I dunno. Given the shi.te that she has endured over the years, and most recently at the start of 2007, I feel she has made a stellar effort in coming back to perhaps have her best ever season. A slump no doubt had to happen. Look at Amelie....same deal. Magic 2006, and miserable since.

It would be a real loss to have two brilliant and stylish female players (who both have - SHOCK HORROR - one handed backhands) quitting in the same year. I know that Amelie has talked it a few times since mid to late 2007. sacré bleu!!
