Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
Another great comment from an illustrious sports commentator

Star Sports commentator says, "strange match, Nadal turned the set around in the 1st set, Nadal up a set and a break, then Roger turns the set around ..... Dan Brown couldn't have scripted it better"

Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
I think alot of it was yes his respect for Roger....something that he has always shown. It is so nice to see players doing just that. Similar to Blake and Agassi. Also your second suggestion about the time out...that as well

I really though he was going to have to withdraw..Poor old Uncle Tony was having a spasm one the side lines, and wqith good reason. I thought some of his hand signlas to Rafa when he had the trainer could have been interpreted as "withdraw".

Love your comment:
" There is a world of difference between a 'sniffy nose' and a potential hamstring injury

...almost as good as your one:
"Princess No(Hamburg Title)vak "

You have a very furtive imagination but then again there is inspiration to make it so

Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
Rafa was really quite restrained during the final don't you think? No vamoses, not a lot of fist pumping or jumping around.

One of the commentators, can't remember which one, thought it may be due to respect for Roger, given that this tournament is 'in Roger's backyard' and Roger was trying to win for a 5th time.

The other one reckoned Rafa may have felt a bit guilty for the medical time-out at 5-1 in the first.

AT LEAST HE DIDN'T QUIT! He could have and I'm sure the fans would have understood what with Roland Garros coming up - the big prize... There is a world of difference between a 'sniffy nose' and a potential hamstring injury...

I am almost salivating at the prospect of the RG draw - now I know I'm being potentially petty, nasty, very childish BUT I hope its an absolute stinker for Princess No(Hamburg Title)vak and I would love to see him play Kevin Anderson at the first available opportunity.

I won't rest comfortably until there is a bigger gap in the rankings - he still is way too close for comfort to Rafa. And he is still leading the bl.oody ATP Race! Ugh

Geoff, you have showed remarkable restraint towards our recurring virus - kudos to you! Perhaps you could go on 'special assignment' whilst in Paris... you know what to do!! LOL

Len. You did the same except I went to bed at 5/1 thinking he had the first set in the bag...wrong...got the rest this morning b4 work.

glad you like mine and Skips comments

I'm off to London on Thursday night,. I am working on trying to go over to Paris on the following weekend May 30/June 1 but that depends on many things. Hope the hotel has a DVR as unlike you folks here it will be mostly in the daytime.

Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
Hi Skip..response to you first.

The new rankings are out on ATP

Federer 6675
Nadal 5585
Djokovic 5225
Davydenko 3290

And I am with you I didn't really mind who won but maybe secretly I was hoping Rafa would as it would distance himself from the Princess more and it has

Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
Roger might be my favourite on the tennis circuit but for the Hamburg Masters, I was probably happy that Nadal won due to the points. Federer is in a position where he could afford to lose 150 points. Nadal needs as many more as possible. He only has a couple of chances and this was a big one. By winning it meant he went up 150 points rather than stayed at the same he was on before. Which is 150 more points clear of our little princess. :)

Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
Cripes...watched the first set before letting the DVR do the rest. At 5-1 up Roger was blistering, however when he missed that drive volley on set point, I wondered if that would be a crucial miss. It was. Also, I don't feel that the injury time out Rafa had during that next change over would have helped Roger much at all. I think this let doubt creep into his mind and somewhat skew his hot form at that time.

Despite that break, I just don't know what Roger feels he has to do to beat Rafa. That is now twice this year he has had a double-break lead over Rafa in a final, only to lose the set. Roger has to seriously overcome whatever mental block hits him when up against Rafa on clay. Somehow I feel he would be a sport psychologists dream in this area.

Perhaps Rafa has (on clay) over Roger, what Roger has over virtually all other folks on every other surface. A 1-8 clay record to Rafa just ain't pretty. Here's to hoping by end of RG in a few weeks it becomes 2-8!

My hat off to Rafa once again...he continues to astound me. G, you said in in that he is a tenancious little bugger. Skip - touche on God being Span.ish ;-)

Great tournament in the closing stages. Here's to RG and may be us spotting Geoff lapping up some of the centre court matches :-)

...and there is a God and He is Spa.nish and His Will shall be done....

Wow, how good was that?

I wouldn't have minded if Roger had won (HONESTLY) so it is a great result. In fact, it is as great a result as the SF against Novak. Plus, as a bonus, Rafa gets a few more points, although I don't know how that will go after lasts years are taken in account - mathematicians please...

Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
well what a Master on Clay Rafa is...in my words a tenacious bugger (if Yahoo lets me say that). Sure Rf had his chances but thaat fighting power and determination is something that just leaves you without words to describe the man...bravo Rafa ..and keep knocking on that clay court King Roger.

Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
It was a tremendous match.
Hitting of the highest calibre.
I still think Djokovic persisted too much with just trying to hit through Nadal, which simply cannot be done.
Nole hung in there for longer than i expected him to - he did very well. Nadal though is the proverbial brick wall with attitude. Virtually impossible to beat on this surface.
I hope RF can keep it together and mix play up tonight and he'll be in with a shot at it.
Looking forward to the big one....

Re:Masters Series - HAMBURG Reply to this message
No I didn't ...watched Fed and then passed out but the old faithful was going so am enjoging it now for breakfast...although I think it will be a logn one as it was over 3 hours.

THE PRETENDER v THE HEIR

First set just over. Both playing some great tennis. However, when it comes to it the Princess cannot play the big points on serve. eg down a triple break point and plays a stupid loose drop shot...You would never see Nadal do that....way too casual and stupid. Okay be broke back the next game. How was that point at 55 and Rafa takes the first point on DK's serve...magical cross court drop shot.
