Hi Skip. Watching Sharapova right now..her serve has gone to the dogs. See the real pretender LH has won his first set....we shall see if he servives the first round.
Yes we are indeed fortuate in having two covered courts. They are so far behind it is not funny and the forcast is not good. Some like Blake played their first match on Sunday and has to wait four days to play his second round. it must be so hard to get any rhythm going .They are going to sandwich those matches so tight to catch up.
They are talking of rebuilding centre court..are they going to even think about a roof?
The new centre court at wimbledon is going to have a roof I think. |

Yes twoleftfeet, we certainly are lucky here...
Not so lucky in Paris though, here is a weather forecast and unfortunately, I don't think we have see the last of the rain delays - quel mauvais temps!

| How spoilt are we for the Aus Open - not just one, but two courts that can close the roof so play can continue when it rains (unless there's a freak flood anyway) |

Hey leave Stolle alone !!!
Granted he's been around as a commentator since the 1980's
but he's still one of the best (and a former French winner).
Is my fave Lady, Kerryn Pratt commentating at the French this year ?! I just luv her! |

Yes. Pity about the rain skip. Rafa hasn't even finished his first round match. Nice to see Davydenko has gone through. The writer from Sports Illustrated gives him this defintion when he rates the players and their chances of winning at Roland Garros:
4. Nikolay Davydenko: The guy is a former semifinalist and did win in Miami. But, like the Karma Chameleon, he comes and goes. And one senses he's still not ready to take on the Big Three in a meaningful way.
Maybe he knew Boy George when he was a little younger. :) |

I'm getting a bit sick of this rain - what are they going to do if it keeps up and why don't they have a roof?
Caught most of Davydenko's match against Johannsen - didn't Davydenko play well? And he just won a tournament last weekend and here he is again! He seemed to be (outwardly) very strong mentally as well so that bodes well for his prospects. Yes, he had a little medical timeout but still, he has got to be a bit tired and still played and managed to finish his match before the rain. Well done! |

This one is related soley to Roland Garros.
Just another link I've found but the author gives the tournament the full monty when it comes to a once over. I'll attach the link for his story but also the link to the home page of the website. I think over the next 2 weeks we might see some interesting articles come out of it.

Hey Geoff...sorry, I thought you were taking in Paris soon after hitting London. Best of fortune then for this middle weekend and getting to some good matches. I dunno on the Court SL thing, maybe the organ.isers read Weekend's comment and thought they would at least give him an end point to a streak (if there is one for RF playing centre court matches at GS tournies).
Cripes, just saw the Smeets result. Even he didn't "Do a Djokovic" when he had every reason to - sickness from embarrassment. Not a good result for Aussie tennis. Perhaps Tennis Australia will tell him to play under the Netherlands flag if he continues these results ;-)
The last time I was in London the Aust Open was on. The commentary team (whose names I cannot recall) were superb. A British male and female pairing. As good, thorough, intelligent and non-biased as the Fox3 guys. Glad you get more good commentary.
And little Willy Canas is gone in straight sets too. Pffft....not like he was going to cause a stir.
Ok, that's it for tonight. Enjoy the day and will check in later for your posts. Len |

Hi Len. I'm in London not Paris. If all goes to plan I hope to go over friday night for two days so get the middle weekend.
Just watched RF cool calm and collected...Why was is match on SL and they put Robredo on centre court...weird.How was Berdych/Smeets 1.0 & o...how embarrasing
As far as commentators at least they have a good bunch here and wedont have to put up with the aged comments of Stolle |

On this latter point, I am gutted to have noted that our regular fox sports 3 boys are not on the broadcast. I don't mind having Mark Woodforde back, but am struggling listening to the likes of Fred Stolle again. His commentary in the 21+ years that I can recall of hearing his work, these days he really just says the same old cr.ap that he did back then. Talk of prize money, how far a player is behind the baseline, how large the stadium courts are and how much room the players have here to move, how shoes are important equipment for a player...and that a player is in a rally until they lost the point! Go figure on this last one. There is no insight or intelligence to his "insight" and commentary.
He's another person who should be put out to pasture. |

Hey G - great to know you made it safe and sound to Parigi. Hope you're having a ball there despite the weather looking a bit ordinary today. Have you scored your tickets yet for any session at RG? I didn't see any of the Sunday matches and just had a quick peek at Roger in the process of doing a number on Querrey. Boring match and not helped by the early start and typical lack of crowds at this time. Enjoy your time there.
Weekend: I think one of your questions can be answered on Roger's matches on centre court. He is playing on Court Suzanne Lenglen today which is the second stadium court. Court Philippe Chatrier is the centre court. This one is being hogged by the Coria v Robredo match! Sacre Bleu to that....but at least you asked one of the most timely, hard-to-find-an-answer-to questions.
Also, thanks for that clip from the US Open final last year. Was watching that one over and over for a while. The stunned mullet look is great.
Skip, I still have not had a proper look at the draw to send you my thoughts on matches that I think will pan out and ones to watch out for. I would be banking on Davydenko ahead of Ferrer right now based on current form and that Davydenko is a touch stronger mentally. Novak played an interesting match last night, however I won't consider the first set loss as a sign of anything.
Had a look at some online scoreboard results and noticed that Andy Murray won in five (after being down 2-1 sets), Baghdatis is a first round loser to in form Bolelli, and Princess in Waiting got dumped in rnd 1 :-D
For the women's draw - anyone willing to have have a go at the name of this first round winner: A. Pavlyuchenkova? Let's hope she doesn't make the finals for the commentators sake... |

| stasy I admire your faith in LH. I dont think anyone can make any predictions about how far he will or will not go till we see how he goes in his first match. IMO I think he should have waited longer as his hip is not fixed and he can do further damage. |

Even though we're on the Roland Garros site, there was no use going back to one of the other threads as they are way to old. This is a double bonus. I didn't think I would find it but it was one shot I saw in the Final of the US Open last year between Federer and Djokovic. It had to be the best shot of the tournament. Not many others could pull this one off at this stage of the match with so much confidence. The double bonus comes as it was Djokovic he left for dead with the shot. :) Here's the link.

Yes, I'm just hoping for the three peat from last year. Hamburg - Fed v Raf, Roland Garros - Fed v Rafa, Wimbledon - Fed v Rafa. They've kept the first one with a reversal of fortune though in results. The next two are the big ones though with points and titles at stake.
Here's an "interesting" question. I don't know if anyone would be able to track down the answer to something like this.
When was the last time Roger Federer played a match outside of the main court (centre court) at a grand slam?
I would have liked to leave it open at any tournament but I've closed it to just the Grand Slams. |

Bonjour G - good flight?
In James's quarter, I think the ones to watch might be Canas, Moya, Tipsy, perhaps Del Potro, No(I'm not a quitter)vak and of course, Blake. Don't know about Baghdatis lately though - since Australian Open a few years ago, he hasn't really made the big strides we thought might happen. Wonder if this is also the future path for that other surprise AO finalist, Tsonga? He's out of the RG and apparently will have to have some knee surgery according to his coach.
As for the other quarters, well if Roger is on form and he will be (gunning for his first RG title after all), then he should win his quarter.
The second quarter has a few possibles - Davydenko (quietly consistent but mentally might not hold up towards the very end), Ferrer (solid player but he's at the end of a really full schedule), Safin? (nah might last a round or two, he showed some form at Hamburg but his temper always lets him down) - hard to tell this one, probably Davydenko or Ferrer.
I will (naturally and completely without bias LOL) pick Rafa for the last quarter. Even though he has Nalby and a losing record against him, this player is another up-and-down player and he's playing on clay so.... I like Nalbandian and normally would like him to win but not against Rafa (ah, there's that unbiased outlook shining through again). |

Had a look at the draw - I'll bet Roger is relieved he didn't get the 'Princess' although I think that Rafa, not Roger, has more chance on this particular surface of taking Novak out.
Rafa does have a difficult draw but fimgers crossed he'll meet Roger in the final........ |

Draws at RG are out. Some interesting matches, however will comment later on some of these. From a story I read earlier, Nadal has a touch run, the Princess perhaps the most favourable draw of the top three players, and Federer an testing, but ok draw until perhaps the semis.

Skip, thanks plenty for this info...Absolutely intrigued after reading this, continue to baffle at the oddity of science, trajectories, ridges etc. Great find and interesting as to the source you found it at.
I will get to do some more reading on this in a few weeks when I have a bit more spare time to do so. Many thanks....L |
