Hey guys! Bummer about the rain stopping play again yesterday but at least they got to play again after a short respite.
Bad luck for James Blake but at least he got out there and had a go at the clay season. Yes, Wayne Odesnik - do a Kevin Anderson (a la Miami 2008) and send Novak back to Mummy in Belgrade...
Davydenko was good, Marat let some of his frustrations out as the match went on and paid for his temper by losing concentration and the match. Koyla has Ljubicic next but I think he'll win this one too.
Good on Hewitt for keeping our national hopes alive but he will be coming up against Ferrer who will be well rested after stomping all over Santoro (bit of an embarrassing result there for Fabrice).
What did you think of Devilder? He certainly came out blasting in the first set but I think he may have lasted a bit longer if he hadn't jumped in the air just about every time he hit the ball! So much energy expended and perhaps better used later... Nadal still has quite a bit of work to do in his quarter unlike some other prospects who have just about got a free pass to the semis...
Another late night tonight, don't you just love it?
Hopefully no rain, s'il vous plait |

Morning all. No big surprises really overnight. It would be nice to see Blake make it through for a couple more rounds one year. See how he goes when it comes to the business end of the tournament.
I just came across some highlights of the last 2 years finals between Federer and Nadal at Roland Garros. It was great to see where and how each player was winning the points. Federer cleaned Nadal up in the first set last year and they showed plenty of points in that. Nearly ever time he won the point, he was able to position himself to push Nadal very wide on his backhand and ready himself for the return to put away as Nadal was too far out of court to have a chance at getting to it. Throughout the rest of the match though, Fed wasn't doing it as often. I didn't see the whole match though so maybe Nadal found a way to overcome it but Nadal was pretty lost on a few of those points. This is a must watch if you want to see some quality tennis between these top tennis players. Just go to the Roland Garros website and its the last item on the list near the top of the page.
Good to see Federer get through last night. Even though he lost the first set, he didn't even has his serve broken once throughout the whole match. 42 unforced errors though. That needs to be toned down a bit although 20 of them were in the first set. He has another tricky opponent in the next round though.
Nadal looks pretty much on track atm.
Go Wayne Odesnik!!! Pull a rabbit out of your hat mate. We're all chearing for you. |

Sharapova is not very good on clay, but with Henin gone this tournament is anyone's now. Maria has made the semis here before - I'm hoping she doesn't win it this year though! Would be nice to see one of the Serb girls break through.
I feel sorry for the Nalbandian fans - again. And Lleyton looks OK, huh? Will lose the next round to Ferrer though. |

Dellacqua leads the Aussies into the 3rd round with a nice win over Dechy in straight sets. |

"We all like a bet so perhaps for the next tournament we should start a sweep - for example, pick the 4 x semifinalists or just the finalists etc - whoever guesses correctly gets points - whoever has most points wins the sweep. I don't know, might be a bit of fun! What do you think?"
I like the thought skip -- count me in for that one with the next tournament. Definitely should include the remaining GS and MS tournaments for the year.
Reminds me of the suicide tennis game that gets around and is going on for the French Open - basically of every round of matches (men's and women's), you get to pick one player from each round as your winner. If they come up trumps, you move to the next round, but MUST chose a different player from the available matches - you cannot chose the same player twice in a tournament.
If your player loses, you're dusted for that tournament. May consider having a go at this if one is setup for Wimbledon. Seems like fun. |

For James, I am not surprised that he went out with a whimper in the end - clay will never be his thing. A shame though that there was not much of a contest in the end.
As for Nalbandian, my first thought when watching the score tracker (twas' not a televised match), was that he either was unwell, tired, or as Fiery Fred Stolle would say - he lost the plot. A very weird result in the end, especially the lopsided scoreline in the last three sets.
Fed in with a tight match right now in the first set against Montanes, however this is by watching tracker. Rafa vs Devilder on right now and Rafa up a set.
Not much else worth commenting on at this point. Waiting for that standout match to happen. Maybe with Safin v Davydenko! |

Well that was a match Blake wold prefer to forget I feel. He more than had his chances but well done Gublis. Onto the grass court season now to Halle.
Nalbandian is having a tough one as well 2 sets all when he won the first two. |

Not sure I would evn think of putting Sharapova in that list. If you saw her match yesterday there was so much missing from her game..It wasn't pretty.
as for the men If Davydenko gets past Safin if he plays on form thn he has the easiest run in his quarter than anyone else...maybe Ferrer might have something to say on that though
Skip hopefully I go over on Friday night or saturday moring..still trying to swing it.
James is first up on #1 shortly. |

just had a look on tabonline. it would be worth 10 bucks to bet on hewitt winning. highly unlikely he will but at $251 - 1.
If Federer goes and Nadal doesn't perform as well with him not really 100% fully fit, Hewitt would be the one I would have my money on. It would be an interesting match to watch him and Novak. I'd back Hewitt with his experience. Novak loosing his cool too easily going into it as favourite.
10 x 251. What a bargain. |

Weekend, the upcoming Davydenko-Safin match today is definitely going to be one to watch. Two personalities each on the opposite end of the scale when it comes to temperament. The problem is that there are quite a few good matches coming up today that I'll have one eye glued to the TV screen and the other to the IBM slamtracker... I wonder what Fox will show? Am keeping fingers crossed for the Davydenko-Safin...
Santoro-Ferrer should be another good match, also Hewitt-Fish. Federer and Blake are also playing, although not each other.
Saw that Maria 'Scream'apova was 2 points away from being booted out last night - can't watch her for too long, the whole serving ritual thing is too annoying, it never varies.
Geoff - I think there will definitely be a roof on Centre court at Wimbeldon this year and a retractable one for next year - here's a press release (PS are you off to Paris this weekend?)

I just noticed what will be a match I wouldn't miss out on in the second round. Safin v Davydenko. Could be very interesting if Safin controls his temper to a degree and gets fired up as he can. He is virtually unbeatable at his best. His attitude is a credit to that as you would have to take him down kicking and screaming.
On the circuit at present, take the players and look at their ability/capability to perform and what they are like at their best and I think the match you would not want to miss would be Marit Safin v Roger Federer. I don't know if I could pick a winner if both were at peak. Those 2 are the best when it comes to a match outside of the clay. |

and the second aussie woman through with Stosur defeating Peer. Makes up for the loss of all the men except LH.
A few suprise exits with the men Karlovic, Monaco, Seppi, Ferrero. Dont include Calleri as I wanted Fish to win, although LH wont as he was beaten by Marty earlier this year I think in Indian Wellls but can't remember |

Hewitt starts French Open with a win
AAP - May 28, 2008, 9:45 pm
Australia's Lleyton Hewitt began his French Open campaign with a commanding win over Nicolas Mahut of France but fellow Aussie Peter Luczak made a first round exit.
Hewitt, the No.25 seed, showed no sign of the hip injury that threatened to keep him away from Roland Garros when he won the first-round match 6-4 6-2 6-4 in two hours.
Hewitt made inroads when he converted the second of two break points for a 5-4 lead.
Serving for the first set, he handed world No.43 Mahut two break points with a double fault, but managed to save both.
The Frenchman averted a scare in the opening game of the second set, saving a break point but Hewitt replied by converting the second of two break points in the fifth game when his opponent sent a forehand wide.
Hewitt battled to hold serve immediately afterwards but took control in the very next game with a smash to claim his second consecutive break.
Serving for the set, the Australian won the next game to love.
Another Hewitt double fault gave Mahut two break points in the fourth and the Frenchman claimed the first for a 3-1 lead.
Hewitt broke back three games later, however, and then held serve to restore parity at 4-4 before claiming another break and the right to serve for the match.
He set up two match points with an ace and converted the first with another ace.
It was Hewitt's first competitive match since the Davis Cup win over Thailand in April and his first appearance on the ATP tour since the Miami Masters in late March. |
