Besides I said best of all time. The only player you bring up was Sampras and then said he is considered "one of the greatest". My point being, I think Federer is good but to call him "the greatest" when he's been beaten at the French open three times in row just doesn't sit well with me.
Comparing it to something like Tiger Woods in golf. By the time he retires as long as he keeps on winning majors he will be the greatest. He's just been so dominant and no other player of his era has gotten the better of him. |

| You'll have to name them sprarepart. Because there have been none that have dominated on all surfaces in the open era. Post 1970. |

Maybe because Federer dominates just like that on every other surface and is ahead of all but 1 guy on clay!
It was said in the paper today that in ANY other era (including Borge's) Roger would have won the French at least twice by now. It is just that Nadal is amazing on clay.
Sampras is considered amongst the greatest of all, yet he was nowhere near as good as Federer on clay. In fact it is only the grass where Sampras can boast a record to match Federer. |

| You've got to wonder how they can argue that Federer is the best player of all time when Nadal is able to beat him so conclusively on clay. He is obviously dominated on the surface. |

| Yes nye. I watched both their interview, just little snippets of it on the multimedia page at Roland Garros. It was nice to listen to Nadal and Roger. Roger would have liked to him but he was happy for Nadal. And Nadal may have been happy to win, but he was glad he got to play Roger again. They have a great rivalry and really enjoy playing each other. They both give it everything but at the end of the day, lets toast to the winner. |

Awesome from Nadal, but you're right, you cannot take away anything from Roger - he's now made the final of all slams at least 3 times! The only place he's lost a final though is France, but you feel Nadal has that little trophy locked away for a while yet!
Gracious in defeat Roger, Gracious in victory Rafa - class acts the both of them! |

Kraavitz - I saw those stupid questions the other day - couldn't believe what I was reading, just ridiculous (and they go to jounalism school to learn how to ask those questions?)
Here is something I found for you - it talks about stupid interview questions about halfway through article

Weekend, don't take too much notice of what Geoff likes to call 'viral infections' - if you ignore, it will go away. Its like a mosquito bite - the more you scratch, the itchier it gets. Besides, napalm works better! |

I would love to be a tennis reporter as it would give me a chance to ask a number of the inane questions that get put to a lot of players day in, day out.
http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/news/interviews/ 2008-06-08/200806081212942624771.html
Two favourites:
Q. Imagine it's 2009 and this little fairy comes to you and says, You're going to win one tournament, but you have to choose: Wimbledon or Roland Garros. Which one?
ROGER FEDERER: I don't want to answer these stupid questions anymore. They're too stupid. Am baffled after reading some of the questions in RF's post match interview -
Q. But why?
ROGER FEDERER: Because I want to win at everything. I have no preference.
Final question - final lines by Roger...based on previous seasons post the French Open, we all know what usually happens to Rafa.
Q. But do you feel competition from younger players?
ROGER FEDERER: Yes and no. I played young players and all the players, I mean, players older than me, but they were stronger, like Hewitt and such when I came on the tour. I had to play Agassi, Roddick, Ferrero, and then there was Rafa. Now there's Djokovic coming up. He was playing semifinals in Grand Slam tournaments this year, so yes and no.
So it's motivating to see all these young players coming up. It's a challenge, but I'm quite confident the second half of the season is going to be better than the first, and this is why I want to focus on grass now.
We'll see later what happens for the ranking. It's true that Rafa has played very well so far, but the clay season is over, so let's see what happens. |

Hi there, a Roger fan crawling in here to see if there's any commiseration going on. Was that the most demoralizing end to the clay season or what? Mentally, Federer never even made it into the match. A heartbreaker for me. I loved Nadal's tennis, but it was hard to enjoy when you're so emotionally invested in his opponent, and the walls of delusion comes crashing down. When I get over this, I'll go back and try to enjoy the match from his perspective without feeling embarrassed or downright depressed. Bellucci's probably feeling very happy right now with his first round loss against Nadal. Certainly had a better game against Nadal than Federer did.
No more red stuff, gimme some pastures. |

skip...from Geoff's previous posts, I believe he was back in home in time for the finals, however I would not be surprised if he is still in a shell shocked state at the result of the final!
Another note on the post match - it was astounding that the applause from the crowd (after match point) was muted / stifled. I believe they were all just as rocked by what they did or perhaps did not see. Sounded like applause offered after a third round doubles match with a crowd of 50 people available with 33 of them offering applause. Like watching that final scene in Hitchco.ck's "The Birds"...
Even Rafa's reaction seemed to be very muted, but also one of extreme respect for Roger. No massive celebrations as with the previous years where he won a tight final. Roger's final words were typically gracious despite being smashed to oblivion. Rafa's comments were in the same manner of grace.
A classy end to a disappointing final, however pretty good tournament. |

Quote weekend "Thanks for the run down on what happened last night. I woke up at about 4 and was half expecting the match to be still running."
Weekend - I hear you. I stuck in a DVR and the match didn't even fill the first 2hr disk!!! It expired during the trophy presentations. Nightmare indeed as I was expecting at least a slightly closer final, even if it would be a straight set loss for RF.
The match was a shocker for RF. Plain and simple. He left his worst match of (a pretty successful clay) season til the last, most important one. Almost like he wanted this one so badly that he was a lost puppy when it came to tactics. It is one that I will watch over again (just not yet) as I think confusion reigned supreme in his game...such is the state Rafa will put ANYONE in on clay.
Agree totally with your comment - and one I also referred to recently - in that Roger needs to look back to the 2006 Rome final to determine how he should approach Rafa on clay.
I will state now that unfortunately I think this was perhaps Rogers last "very good" opportunity to win this final. Four successive years he has faced the Nadal juggernaut for four consecutive losses. Nadal is actually getting better on clay as he gets older...this year is proof in the pudding for that one. What he did from all tournament, particularly from the 4th rnd onward, is whimsical and on par with what Roger has done at all the other majors. |

Thanks for the run down on what happened last night. I woke up at about 4 and was half expecting the match to be still running.
When I looked at the score on the computer I thought I must have been still asleep having a nightmare. Federer must have completely changed his game plan to try and win here. At least he'll see that it didn't work. I was afraid Nadal would win in straight sets on the level the 2 have been playing.
That must take him back to Borg as he has gone through the tournament without losing a set. I have a feeling Borg did it twice.
I think I'll have to get the Rome Final in 2006 and see how Federer played him then to go within a whisker of winning. Hamburg 2007 was a Nadal who was a little too exhausted I think. And a best of 5 will be better to see. |

Well, sorry for the Roger supporters but one thing to take away from this - at least he got to the final and wasn't dumped out earlier on in the tournament. This could have happened as his playing level has not been so great in Paris. Clay season is now over and Roger's preferred surface is waiting - chances to make amends and put yesterday behind him.
But seriously though, what a thrashing - Nadal was invincible and Federer was not up to par whatsoever! I can understand why you had to leave the room Len! It was like Nadal was playing some kid from junior tennis camp. Roger had about 35 unforced errors compared to Rafa's 7... It was excrutiatingly (sp?) painful to watch, depressing even for Roger. Even though I was cheering for Rafa in this match, I still felt embarrassed for Roger. Hopefully, he can put this all behind him before Wimbledon - he has Halle coming up and he's won that a number of times so I hope he gets it again this year.
But if he has to face Rafa in the final again at Wimbledon without a win a Halle, then I don't know if he'll be victorious... A mental edge can be so powerful - what's their head-to-head now - 12-6?
On a satisfying (yet petty) note, Rafa should whip past Djerk in the ATP race. Perhaps in the Wimbledon draw this year, Djerk could have some serious competition on his way through the rounds. He never seems to play anyone lately with a ranking higher than #10.
Geoff - are you back yet? Did you get a chance to catch the match?

| That was a shocking final, until the end of the second set i was still on the edge of my seat rooting for Federer but then the real problem was clear. I do not think the score can define the level of the match, it was a poor score but if you've watched the whole match you wouldve known. From the very first point Federer started being aggressive, thrashing forhands and such. After being down a break he continued with other tactics like serving and going to the net and never stopped trying new things throughtout the entire match, finding a way to past nadal. That was not the Federer, it was evident he played a very different style of game and tactic from his new coach Jose. The way Jose coached him makes him tired easily because he always has to be aggresive and going into forhands. Of course, nadal is superior and amazing but I think if Fed kept his own game and played the way he played in the last two finals it would've been a much better final. He's his own best coach but his final just went haywire because of the new game plan. I felt sorry for the fans, the audience on center court. They were all behind Fed and their responses were very dull. I think everyone got a shock including Borg.Everyones faces weren't happy.I felt sorry for his coach too, for some reason. Not trying to make excuses for him but it was just so frustrating for everyoe including the audience when he had so many bad luck shots, into the net and then out. It caused him some vital points. And then at 3-3 if his volley had gone over he would've broke but it caused him the key point of the match. But Fed is still such a great sport, he basically reassured everyone that he'd be back and he never lashed out during the match. |

yeah right on! and how often do you see RF lose by such a score?! Clearly there was something wrong with him ! Of course RAFAEL deserved his fourth French Open but it is
most unusual to see a one-sided match between these two arch rivals. |

hey weekend,
my friend, forget about getting a dvd of this one. RF is
clearly not playing at the level he played in the last two
French Opens. That's not to take anything away from Rafa.
RAFA will prevail in three straight easy sets.
What an effort when you consider RAF had blisters on his feet at the start of the tournament! |

And 22 minutes in, still have not watched the "final" set - point tracker is a much easier way to do so. RF down 0-5. If Rafa wins the next game, I would believe this is the first time (in my memory that):
1. RF has lost a 6-0 set in a GS final
2. RF has lost a 6-0 set in any GS tournament
I believe I may be wrong on point two as I am not across ALL of his GS matches...sigh, he just has not been on today at all, however the way Rafa plays NOBODY has been allowed to be on. He is just so, so very good on clay. My jaw is still on the ground! |
