Gosh, tell me about it. Imagine, after 3+ years the potential for a new #2 at least!! GASP! SHOCK! Unfortunately it has to be someone like Novak. Had he been a better sport and not so arrogant, I would be welcoming that change and loving a new face throwing the current establishment into chaos. There was a time that I did actually like him, but then after Adelaide 2007 he opened his mouth.
Can't believe I am saying this - being a Roger supporter... but GO RAFA AT HAMBURG!!! |

| Your right kraavitz. Nadal has 345 points to lose and Djokovic has 375 points to gain. Nadal will keep No. 2 til after Roland Garros if he finishes equal or ahead of Djokovic at Hamburg. Nadal only has 150 points to gain since he finished as runner up last year to Fed. This is as close as its been I think for 2 and 3 in a long long time. |

Hey weekend - thanks for this great info....possibly your statement about Nadal keeping his #2 spot may change if he gets bounced early at Hamburg and Novak repeats his QF result (highly likely on the latter). Latest ranking points:
1. Federer: 6825
2. Nadal: 5435
3. Djokovic: 5125
Nadal has no room to NOT WIN. He can only hope Novak goes out early. This is going to be very close. I wouldn't be surprised if Novak is #2 prior to Wimbledon or at worst, RG. |

Just an update to all on whether Djokovic will get to number 1 or 2 this year. It will all depend on Federer and Nadal as they have the most points to lose between now and end of year.
It goes as follows with the Grand Slams being the major contributor:
This first one is up until and including the US Open.
The following have the following points to lose/protect:
Federer - 4050
Nadal - 2735
Djokovic - 2265
After the US Open til end of year:
Federer - 1325
Nadal - 695
Djokovic - 480
Total points to protect:
Federer - 5375
Nadal - 3430
Djokovic - 2745
I think if Djokovic makes it to at least the semis at Roland Garros and Wimbledon as he did last year and Nadal and Federer don't make the finals, Djokovic will take over No. 2 after Wimbledon at the latest. If Djokovic makes the final at Roland Garros, he could take the No. 2 spot even if Nadal beats him.
Djokovic starts to slide though if he doesn't make the semis at Roland Garros and/or Wimbledon.
I would have to say going on form and all three playing at their best, the rankings should stay the same til at least after Wimbledon. Esp due to the fact that Roland Garros and Wimbledon are both best of 5 tournaments. Whoever beats Nadal and/or Federer is going to have to play very well to knock them off in 5 if they are at their best. |

Hey weekend...the quote from Roger was stated after his SF loss to Novak at the AO this year. It is available at the interview transcript URL: http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/interview s/2008-01-25/200801251201262265115.html
"Q. Do you think he'll go on and win the final now?
ROGER FEDERER: I don't care really."
As for the final - this time I will give credit to Novak for hanging in there and putting up a fight to win the match. I know I have been critical of him since Monte Carlo, and despite the fact he had a QF and SF opponent withdraw in Rome, he still had to beat Stan and did so. After dropping that first set, he played well to win with the final scoreline that he had. I only watched patches of the match until 3-2 in the second set. Not inspiring tennis by either player, but more matches than not are ordinary at best. A scr.appy, tight, swinging match (a la Roger vs Radek) is more fun to watch as you just don't know which way it will go.
So that's it for Rome....see you folks over in the Hamburg thread. Cheerio, L |

Hi all for the last time here.
I think the powers that be will be forced to relook at the proposed schedule next year also the players need to do something about their choses of events to take part in and not overcrowd their schedules.
So the Priucness made it...not much opposition thougfh and helpded by two walkovers...but as we all say a win is a win. It will get him very close to Nadal though in the rankings to come out later today and welcome to Wawrinka into the top 10. Not a bad effort when you think he was #44 a couple fo weeks ago |

Hey kraavitz,
Where did you get the quote from Roger. I think the ridiculous schedule the players have is starting to get to a few of them. Most of them have had enough of it. They ought to boycott one of them next year if it is not changed.
But where did you get the quote. It was interesting. I haven't heard something from Federer like that for a while. |

| Bit of trivia - Last time Wawrinka played Djokovic in a final was in Umag 2006 where our girl retired, giving Stan his only ATP title. |

I love iot when players play with so called injuries and play like Arod. "I'll just see how I go". It was a case of match fitness with him as he is nowhere near fit.
I'm with you skip.
A real let down from a promising tournament.
Hate to admit it but somehow I dont think I will be sitting up late tonight. save it for the next lot. |

Quote from ATP below regarding the injury plagued Rome Masters.
- The ATP said they noted the concerns and said reforms to the calendar in 2009 would offer players "a fairer and healthier schedule". -
We shall wait and see - I hope so for the players sake. It is only fair that all players should have equal opportunity to rest and defend their titles.
I'm sure the messieurs at Roland Garros will have something to say if there are a lot of injury / fatigue related withdrawals or poor performances this year. Being that it is such a major event, it won't look good if alot of the big names fall early - kind of loses its sparkle... |

| It pains me to say it, but I hope Wawrinka wins this one - better him than the princess who has only got this far through luck and retirements. Not too much skill needed in reaching this particular final. |

| Can't entirely blame the schedule - Andy injured his back and they said Stepanek had a stomach problem (maybe too much celebrating after his win the day before?) Maybe the Rome tournament is jinxed? Will be interesting to see who is the first to call for the trainer in the final, that's one thing they both seem to use well. |

What is a big letdown is the sad story of a semi final between Radek and Novak. Novak was only up by 6-0 and 1-0 before Radek retired. What a let down. All that effort in beating Roger yesterday in one very entertaining match, and now this!
Seriously folks WTF is going on here. The public must be feeling cheated - two semis and two retirements. Despite all of these retirements and injuries this week, I have no doubt the ATP and Etienne will not take heed for 2009 and scheduling.
Cripes, we're talking about the most taxing surface of all every year, and there are just way too many major tournaments going on in such a short period. This is no good for anyone - TV viewers, the players and the public. Not when your Roman final is not the best available and certainly not with the manner in which the finalists made it there.
As for the final and who wins - to quote Roger: "I don't care." |

Just to keep this balance I will go for Wawrinka and Stepanek...yea we wish...but agree the gloss has gone form rome.
RF shouldn't be too upset he did one round better there than last year so that is nothing to be upset about. |

Well it would appear my tips are worthless! The only one I got right was Wawrinka vs Blake and I secretly wanted Blake to win that one anyway but thought Stan would play better.
So in light of my dubious tipping and obvious hexing powers, I would like to tip some more! Hopefully the voodoo will work the same way...
Djokovic vs Stepanek - I'm gonna go with Djokovic to win (eeew)
Rodd.ick vs Wawrinka - actually not too fussed here (in reality I prefer to watch Andy play than Stan the Man)
I cannot wait for this tournament to end - most of the gloss has gone for me. I know it is great to have a change and bit of a shake-up blah blah but roll on Hamburg! |

hmmmm, well someone who cropped up on this thread out of the blue is now 0/2 in their QF picks. If that form is kept, Novak will be bounced, as will everyone's favourite, Roddi.ck.
Great play by Stepanek in the end. Roger just couldn't pip him in the breaker despite being 5-2 up. Not that Roger played a bad one, Radek played a better one. That 33 point rally though was a pearler.
Roger can again mull perhaps his best chance in years to pick up this tournament. As long as he does well at the French, this should not be too big an aberration. Would've been great though to see a Roger vs Joker semi. Too bad that ain't happening. |

Indeedy....gosh, Roger now down 0-3 in the second. I think that first set has gotten to him. He played flawless tennis, yet it went against him. Credit to Radek for looking fresh after his recent matches, and playing an inspired level of tennis. Interesting how the commentators wrote him off just before the first point started.
Radek is just serving on fire and this has clearly been his weapon today. He is mixing it up fantastically and just needed one off game from Roger on serve. Every time Roger has a sniff....perhaps one point Roger will rue was the first set where at 5-4 or 6-5 up, he gave up an ace that was called a fault. He would've been up 0-30 in that game and ended up just losing it. If he didn't give up the point he would've got the break.
Takes me back to 06 RG final where he was 1 set and 40-0 up in game one of the second against Nadal. He conceded a point that was called out, and lost that game. Lost the second set 6-1 and the rest is history. Sometimes being a good sport can cost you. Gives the opponent that extra bit of whatever it is they need.
Roger's game seems to be going on a sojourn right now. Monte Carlo rnd 1 anybody? What will inspire Roger if anything? Perhaps Radek needs to do a Novak right now and "get injured"!! |

I need Roger to win in case Almagro doesn't take out that Serbian upstart - I really don't want ND to win Rome |

Stepanek has taken the first set! How did that happen - Roger seemed to play better (eg 100% first serves in) - seems to me Stepanek got in a few lucky shots at the end in the tie break, Roger also got a bit shi.tty, swore a bit and lost some focus.
Anyway, very interesting - the pressure is on! Second set should be very exciting. |

Perhaps though one of my favourite tennis comments of all time was Vitas Gerulaitis. Quote after losing 16 straight to Jimmy Connors and finally breaking that streak:
"Nobody beats Vitas Gerulaitis 17 times in a row!"
Magic. You just got to love a guy who can be this well humoured, and kept on trying for that elusive win. |
