We will have to wait till after theOpen is over to see what the new rankings are but with his lose against the points that he was protecting he will fall probaly below 110. Yes he will have to qualify for events or get a wild card entry

How do the ratings points work with regard to getting into a tournament without playing in the qualifying. If Lleyton slips much lower won't he have to go through from the begining each time? I'm sure I remember seeing on some where the last person accepted was not much lower than LH is now. If he can't get into tournaments how can he lift his ranking.

Forgot to add - grass has been changed at Wimbledon - not the same surface that Hewitt, Federer, etc won on in previous years.

For your information - Hewitt wanted the Aus Open court to be FASTER - it was changed from Rebound Ace to the new surface which is even SLOWER certainly NOT what LH wanted. The Aus Open surface, just like the Wimbledon grass, suits the two-handed back-hand belters (European clay-courters?) and the serve/volley and more "traditional" style of players are at a disadvantage.

These nuts think that there is no such thing as making the most out of a home court advantage.

It's not just Lleyton. Anybody can see that the surface is not suited to Australia's type of tennis. Australia is a traditional force and we have the right to determine the surface to suit our players - based on tradition. It is the Australian Open. Come and beat the Aussie players at home if you can.

It came too late however... (?)

Australians have always preferred grass & fast hardcourts. Laver, Hoad, Newcombe, Emerson, Court, Goolagong Rosewall, Roche et al.

Since 1996, Rafter, Scud, & Hewitt (even Guccioni's) game favour prefer the faster courts.

Take for example recent Aust player results (SF & better) at Wimbledon & US Open championships...

Wimbledon ---
Hewitt (won 2001 v Nalbandian, SF 2005)
Rafter (SF 1999, F 2000 v Sampras,F 2001 v Ivan.isevic, SF 1999) Philippoussis (F 2003 v Federer)

US Open ---
Rafter (won 1997 v Rusedski, won 1998 v Philippoussis)
Hewitt (won 2000 mens doubles, SF 2001, won 2002 v Sampras, SF 2003, F 2005 v Federer, SF 2006)
Philippoussis (F 1998 v Rafter)

This was an era where Australia had 3 genuine contenders if the AO had the older style grass or a fast hardcourt.

In comparison during that period (at the AO) we had a Finalist in Hewitt & a SF in Rafter.

Bette, this is getting scary,I was going to say all THAT too...I am SO glad the little boofhead lost that match...For a few years I reluctantly gave Lleyton the benefit of the doubt about his behaviour etc,I think it might have been the infamous little racist remark incident in that Blake match at the US that tipped me over the edge...I can't stand the little tool!...he's an embarrassment to us all and so are bloody Woody and JA...they've both been like that for years and it's just painful...I wonder how many other people think like this?...has channel 7 done any research about it?...like how many Australians actually can't stand Lleyton, not worship him, like they obviously think?...and yes,GO JELENA...did you see her press conference, the poor kid...I don't care if she wins, I love her anyway

grsydney - I couldn't believe it when Woodbridge said "Leyton's team ORDERED the org *** ers to schedule his first round in the day time!"

When did a player ranked outside the Top 50 begin running the Australian Open???

I had a gutful of him when he was constantly complaining about the surface and now it's been changed to accomodate him - what's his excuses for being bundled out this time???

I'm guessing he will argue the balls or the heat - or Gonzales' "gamesmanship"???

Woodbridge earlier in the telecast suggested Hewitt should apply "gamesmanship" to beat Gonzales - so when Gonzales took a little extra time to apply sawdust to his racket - a ploy to frustrate Hewitt ie. gamesmanship - John Alexander was spitting chips and getting his knickers in a knot!

Best of all was when Gonzales was leading 4-3 in the 5th set and asked for a trainer - ALL WITHIN THE RULES - and Woodbridge this time got his knickers in a knot claiming it was "JUST UNFAIR!" And when Gonzales got his other thigh massaged - I believe channel 7 had it's timer on just in case Alexander or Woodbridge used a choice four letter word!

Channel 7 commentators - I am GLAD Hewitt is out - because maybe, just maybe you will allocate some of your dribbling on other players for a change!

It is NOT the Leyton Hewitt Open - wake up and realise this!

And furthermore - I believe many of us thought this match was going to be in the evening. If Hewitt's team ORDERED the organ1sers to reschedule it during the day - then you have only Hewitt and his team to blame now that your beloved ratings grabber is gone!

Well done Fernando Gonzales - you played a great match - shame the Channel 7 commentators RARELY gave you any credit and HEAPED sh1t on you for stuff that they would barely utter if Hewitt had done the same thing!

Go Jelena Dokic!

blah blah blah

Yeah, Federer is an angel, except when he's b!tching about Andy Murray being the tournament favourite. This despite Murray owning him over the past twelve months (except for the US Open final).

What a bad sportsman Hewitt has shown himself to be yet again. He pleads with the tournament to give hima day match when they were going to schedule him at night. He wanted the "heat" advantage over Gonzo. Big laugh as the temp dropped 15 degrees after the first set
And Thankfully Gonzales prevailed and won.

No one else could get away with what Hewitt does. Federer said last night he did not like playing at night but does he complain no.

Wrong thread my friend!

Try starting a Casey Dellacqua one if you got the balls to.

... "who gives a toss about the other Australian players?!?!"...

Dude, for a start name me 4-5 other players in the singles draw Men and Women!

Most fans would "give a toss" but the fact is that Australian Tennis is in poor shape right now that the hard core fans would be hard pressed to know of any.

Did anyone notice that Casey Dellacqua got last years Semi-finalist Daniela Hantuchova in the first round???

Oh wait - who gives a toss about any of the other Australian players - it's ALL ABOUT LEYTTON!!!!

FFS - let's support our other players - especially the women who MIGHT surprise us all and do very well!

And last time I checked - it was the AUSTRALIAN Open - NOT the HEWITT OPEN!!!

what lleyton needs to do this season if he wants any chance of getting back to the top is PLAY MORE. he's not in the position he was 5 years ago when he didn't have to play many tournys because he was winning them. Now he is certainly back in the pack and the only way for him to save his ranking is by playing more tourny's and hopefully not injure that hip again.

Good on Hewitt for giving Nalbandian a tough fight. However I don't think that is a good indication of where Hewitt is on the comeback trail.Nalbandian played well enough to win, which is his style.I get the feeling that the main thing that kept Hewitt in matches over the years ,his superior fitness,is not so superior anymore.

Re:Lleyton Hewitt's run back to the top ... Reply to this message
the Gonzalez and Hewitt match is a hard one to pick. Hewitt never seems to be able to wrap a match up quickly and always does better if he has to fight back. Watching Gonzalez play today, he wasn't playing badly, and I got the impression that he didn't really care what happened that match.

I tend to agree about the commentators. They have been running out of things to talk about during the matches so they talk about other players instead of the ones on court!

Coz he's a sth aussie and the only one who flies the flag for australian tennis and the Vics and everyone else cant stand that fact....

He has always been loyal and a fighter far more than that gutless Poo who claimed injury each time davis cup time came around so why dont these idiot commentators focus on that???

yes hewitt needs a change of racquet(yonex) needs to play with the wilson or head or any other racquet.. as the yonex racquets can only keep the ball in play cause they are wide but cannot hit down the line winners ...

all i can tell about hewitt game is that he needs to change the RACQUET(yonex) and play with the wilson or headOR any other .. as the yonex racquets is wide and can keep the ball in play but cannot hit down the line winners

this can change his game dramatically .... and he can be a much better player on the tour.

Re:Lleyton Hewitt's run back to the top ... Reply to this message
Hewitt has received a horror draw and I am sure Channel Seven are really upset by this.

Every year we have to tolerate the overwhelming bias towards Hewitt by Channel 7 commentators ESP Alexander, Woodbridge and that horrible ex swimmer Griggs.

I recall watching a womens match at the Medibank international this week - and the Seven commentators found ways to bring up Hewitt in the commentary????

I support the Australian players - but not him. Sure he has been an excellent player - at times - but his behaviour off and on the court has left me so sick to my stomach...

Hopefully Gonzales can knock him out the first round so we will only have to endure Hewitt talk for one week rather than 2. Why one week? Well you know he'll be all over the front page of Herald Sun moaning and groaning about the horror draw he got, the heat (although most of his matches will be at night), the surface, the balls, the sun, the spectators, food poisoning, lack of match practice, the kids keeping him awake (although Bec and the brats will be staying in another of his many penthouses in Melbourne!).
