Hewitt d Sela 4-6 6-4 6-3. Plays Simon next....hard matchup.

Stosur and Dokic also won, so a good day for the Aussies at Miami.

Interesting to note that Hewitt's current ranking of 107 seems to have no impact on his popularity....reflected by his top bill stadium first round appearance against a lucky looser from qualifying.....due on court in a few hours.

Looks like he'll get wildcards into the majors for at least another year on this basis.

Also his Davis cup playing will stop him from playing in 2 tournaments where, if he could be able to play, gain him much needed points.

"The bad news is Australia's Davis Cup playoff against India from May 8-10 - on hardcourt - is likely to deny Hewitt vital tournament appearances at the Rome and Madrid Masters Series events." Hewitt's manager said ""It's a pain in the *rse ... if I had my way, he wouldn't play."

I dont think he played houston last year.

Here is an extract from what he played around that time:

Roland Garros, France
Grand Slam, 25-May-08, O, Clay , Draw: 128
This Event Points: 150, ATP Ranking: 28, Prize Money: €39,400

THA v. AUS AOG 1 2nd Round, Thailand
DC, 11-Apr-08, I, Hard , Draw: 4
This Event Points: 0, ATP Ranking: 21, Prize Money: $0

ATP Masters Series Miami, FL, U.S.A.
ATP Masters Series, 27-Mar-08, O, Hard , Draw: 96
This Event Points: 10, ATP Ranking: 22, Prize Money: $10,580

ATP Masters Series Indian Wells, CA, U.S.A.
ATP Masters Series, 13-Mar-08, O, Hard , Draw: 96

A check of his points breakdown indicates he has nothing to defend from houston:

Well he's been given entrance into the Houston Clay Court..not that it will be of much use to him. He has to get to the third round before he can calim any extra ranking points in Miami. (last year he was out in the second)

After an early exit at Indian Wells Lleyton's ranking dropped back to #92.

Lleyton has a wildcard at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami and will play Lucky Loser Dudi Sela(ranked #57) who went out in the final round of qualifying.

The winner will play Gilles Simon from France. This will be a good chance for him to show his true form and pick up more ranking points.

Every tournament in the next 2 months up until the French Open is on clay. Lleyton will have to go through qualifying, or be granted a wild card, for all these based on his current ranking.

Bad news !

Lost to Gonzalez in 3 sets.
His ranking will drop to between 90 and 100.

Will Lleyton get into the direct draw at Miami ?

Shades of Gustavo Kuerten - he never fully recovered and ended up having to retire.

Well it seems that all is not well with his hip. Here is an extract from Fox:

Hewitt, who thrashed world No.891 Wachiramanowong in straight sets to open the tie on Friday, said his surgically-repaired hip had again troubled him against Udomchoke.
"To his credit he played well and he played better as the match went on," Hewitt said.
"I have seen him play some good matches, he's beaten Tommy Haas in Davis Cup.
"My hip was playing up a little bit today from the third set which didn't make things easy, (but) I am still going to try and play Indian Wells next week.
"For me it is just a matter of strengthening the hip up as well, after the surgery it will take six-to-12 months to get back to full strength."

I just hope he hasn't rsuhed back into playing before he should have

Hewiitt has a 75% failure rate in first round defeats in his last 4 tournaments. This appears to be recession

Sure Hewitt is coming back from injury and many are pleased for him although he lost int eh first round at Delray Beach today. You speak of such ignorance ZB when you talk about Blake. He has lived and managed pain for most of his life and continues. He is an inspiration to many, somehitng you could never appreciate.

I hoep Lleyton does continue we will see

Hewitt is making Blake look pathetic. The so called great Blake comeback from injury in a career that before then had achieved nothing and after achieved even more nothing. Blake couldn't even beat himself.I can't stand Hewitt's attitude but I give him 10 out of 10 for having a go.
