Hey gr.
Doubles players don't get much exposure even if they win major tournaments. What we need is someone in the singles to step-up.
Australian tennis on a world scale is very disappointing! |

LLeyton has won the Final at Houston.
Good on ya LLeyton ! Winning 5 matches in a row will be a great confidence boost.
He will now be be on 1145 points, with an estimated ranking #56.
Collect trophy, give speech, have showeer, do press interviews, pack at hotel then try to get from Houston to Monte Carlo ASAP.
Good Luck in Monte Carlo... |

In the Monte Carlo Tournament Hewitt has drawn Marat Safin first round.
Mercurial Marat always entertains, should be a good match.
Seeing Hewitt plays the final in Houston on Sunday he'll be buggered by the time he gets to Monte Carlo - hopefully he'll be able to get a late start.
Regardless of the outcome he picks up minimum 10 ranking points in Monte Carlo on top of the 150, or 250, from Houston. |

didn't phau beat Hewy in their last meeting. Nonetheless, you would have to pick Hewitt to pick up this title.
This would be a real boost going forward |

the ogod thing is that he has gotten into a fourth round something he hasn't done in ages and if he gets to the finals it will be the first time since early 2007.
There are no high ranking players at all left in the semis:
Phau # 77
Odesnik #100
Hewitt #88
Korolov #83 |

LLeyton is playing tomorrow in the Quarterfinals at Houston. For the first time in the Open Era at the US Open Mens Clay Court Championship, no seed has reached the quarterfinals.
LLeyton is currently ranked at #88 on 895 points
If he loses tomorrow he will be on 940 pts, est rank #80
If he loses in the semis he will be on 985 pts, est rank #72
If he loses in the final he will be on 1045 points, est rank #68
If he wins the final he will be on 1145 points, est rank #56
Can't find his name anywhere on the Monte Carlo Masters entrants, Roger Federer got a wild card there. |

OK, the thread title is obselete now, we get it.
Playing the US Men's Clay Court championship in Houston this week...I think this is played on green clay?
Easily defeated the 7th seeded Diego Junquiera in the first round, and leads Sergio Roitman 6-1 3-2 in the second round at the time of posting.
Tournament first and second seeds Blake and Fish both lost in the first round on their least favoured surface. |

| Mix it with the big boys. Means he will be playing against taller players. But only in small time spans. |

grsydney:
You are right - I saw he played one match last year at Miami, I forgot he was seeded and had a bye in the first round.
However I don't think the points he earnt last year end up the same he earns this year for this same event.
Could you please explain the rankings as this year they are changing the system.
Last year, according to the draw, 2nd round at Miami earned 20 points.
http://www.atpworldtour.com/tennis/en/common/Track It.asp?file=/1/posting/2008/403/mds.pdf
This year, according to the draw, 2nd round at Miami earns 25 points.
http://www.atpworldtour.com/tennis/en/common/Track It.asp?file=/1/posting/2009/403/mds.pdf
This is where I am confused, his ranking breakdown shows he is defending 10 points !

Will he end up with another 15 points ? |

What I find is interesting is the continual trip that Hewitt spruiks about mixing it with the big boys and still having the game to get back to the top 10. Again I will say he should stop speaking garbage and realise he will be lucky to get near the top 50 again. Here is an intersting bit of info and a stat that validates he is so far from mixing it with the big boys:
"Hewitt was thrashed 6-1 6-2 by seventh-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon to extend his losing streak against top 10 opponents to 11 matches. The world No.92 has now not beaten a top 10 player since he downed Nikolay Davydenko in Hamburg in May, 2007." |

"You gotta feel for him, he's just keeping his head above water in the rankings and will go up to about #88 after next week."
Where does that comes from. He dodesn't get any points at all for the second rounds loss. He was deffending a second round last year.
Because others are playing in events other than MC he is more than likely going down over #100
He can't expect wild cards everywhere. He needs to do what many others have and that is play a couple fo challenger events and gets some cheap points.
If he is serious about getting his ranking back up he should think hard about playing in Davis Cup sometimes and play tour events. We have all heard many times who wonder LH is for Australian tennis and I dont disagree. But now is the time for him to do something about his rankings FAST |

Lleyton Hewitt was sent crashing out of the ATP Masters event in Miami this morning , crushed by French seventh seed Gilles Simon.
It was the 11th straight time Hewitt has lost to a top 10 opponent.
You gotta feel for him, he's just keeping his head above water in the rankings and will go up to about #88 after next week.
If he doesn't get many ranking points between now and the French Open and other players overtake him Lleyton might will need to get a wildcard or play qualifiers.
If Lleyton doesn't do as well as last year at the French Open we'll have rename this thread:
"Lleyton Hewitt's run back to the top 100!' |

"Looks like he'll get wildcards into the majors for at least another year on this basis"
Hardly a forgone conclusion. He has to apply let alone be granted them. He has applied for Monte Carlo but they haven't responded. |
