| I think Hewitt really appreciates this result particularly when he has never beaten Karlovic.Every man and his dog knows that Hewitt lost in the first round in 2003 as the defending champ. What's new dude? |

Didn't I ask you to let us know of the final score?
Anyway for the record - Hewitt won 6-7,6-7,7-6,6-4,6-3.
One wonders whether Hewitt would love to trade this result with the 2003 first round loss to Karlovic at Wimbeldon, where Lleyton was the defending champion. |

Great win Lleyton !
Check out the stats at: http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/scores/stats/day 6/1004dss.html
Aces don't always ensure victory. Karlovic set a world record with his 55 aces against Hewitt, beating the previous best of 51 aces set by Joachim Johansson in the first round of Wimbledon in 2005, a match the Swede also lost. Joachim Johansson was another great tall player who was mates with Hewitt and dated his sister, he is now ranked 541 in the world.
Any tennis player knows that having aces thrown at you is very disheartening. Hewitt had 55 aces go by ! Hewitt didn't give up and hung in there and wore his opponent down and got a well earned win.
Hewitt's always been a fighter. He has left many an opponent astounded at shots he has run-down and hit a winner from, even at the later stages of a long match.
If Lleyton wins his 2nd round match against Andrey Golubev he will then face some guy called Nadal, that might be a diferent result as Nadal employs they same grinding tactics. |

| what short memories you have. hewitt was number one for a long time. he ran into roger federer and injuries. he got married, had children. but his fighting qualities and basic ability to rally will always threaten the best of the best. hewitt himself served a lot aces against karlovic. on clay, that suggests he can win until he faces nadal. he will not beat nadal on clay. but rankings wise, and fitness permitting, hewitt can do anything he sets his mind to because he BELIEVES he can. |

You say 50 aces?! Wow!!!
Must be some kind of record considering it's on clay surface.
What's the final score of the match? |

Where's Lleyton ????
Is he in Europe, or back in Australia ??
He's not in Rome this week. Next week there are three tournaments (Munich, Estoril, Belgrade) - with his current ranking he could play in one of those, but may not have entered as he had Davis Cup duties.
Madrid Masters starts in 2 weeks with a draw of 56. Lleyton will not be eligible for direct entry, so will have to play qualifiers or go for a wildcard.
Seems likely he will miss his goal of being seeded at the French Open on 25th May. |

tough match against safin - two breaks in it really
Mind you this was a match of two former #1's and Safin does pack some game, if he has the mind to bring it.
Either way, hewitt after backing up would take some positives out of this week. 500 is at the next tourney and maybe, just maybe the hip is on the improve |

well Master he lives in Monte Carlo so I dont think he wont turn up
As for the comment b4. Hewiit has to realise that there are 63 other players to consider and not just the 64th one. |

Given the circumstances, Safin should smash Hewitt in Monte Carlo. Unless of course he fails to turn up...this has been known to happen.
Congrats to Hewitt on the win. He didn't beat anyone of note, but it has been a while since he won 5 matches in a row. |

This is where a reputation and a big bank account make a diference.
"Along with hitting partner Nathan Healey and physiotherapist Ivan Gutierrez, Hewitt was instead flown privately to Dallas by a local businessman and was not due to arrive in Monaco until lunchtime on Tuesday. After about 17 hours of travel, Hewitt will be required on court that same afternoon - even with his manager, David Drysdale, having requested the latest possible Tuesday scheduling."
17 hours of travel, a 7 hour time diference,Jet Lag, a new court surface, did anyone forget their visa ?
I checked yesterday. To get 4 people from Houston to Paris economy class on short notice was nearly $US11,000 - even without delays it wouldn't have made in time.
A good example of why bringing along the wife and kids can get really testy. To players without Hewitt's resources this would be impossible. |
