Spot on MON! Plus, who of us would retire in Lleyton's situation? NOBODY!

He is winning enough to not only be taking home a butt load of prizemoney, but to also remain value for sponsors to keep chucking a lot more cash at him too.

He gets to travel around the world with his wife and child and gets to make a living doing what he loves.

Can he win another major? Probably not - but that goes for all but about 5 guys on the tour. He is still not 30, he could keep doing this for another 5 years if he wants - and who are we to say he shouldn't?

I always find it curious that sport is the one profession where the man on the street feels he has the right to tell someone when to retire.

Unless an athlete is in some physical danger, eg a boxer who goes on after his reflexes are gone, then shouldn't the athlete him/herself decide when they've had enough? It's only their own reputation that is potentially going to suffer, it's won't hurt anyone else.

Understand your point about to continuing to play the sport/profession somebody loves......but your point re: earning a living I think is not relevant. Hewitt is a multi-millionaire & is not playing for the cash (well - not anymore).....by own admission is IS about winning slams for him.

I may have misunderstood you on the earning a living part, but the fact is that for anybody who was once at the very top & is no longer (for various reasons including health) & the years are moving on (in this case - in tennis terms), do they really want to get to some much lesser level without coming close to the big ones?.....I think not.

There is some truth in what you say, but playing tennis, or any professional sport for that matter, isn't just about winning the Slams or the top prizes. It's about playing the sport you love and have trained for for year, and still earning a living doing so. Sure, it won't be the really big bucks, but if it's enough to live reasonably well, why should he hang up his racquet just because he's not beating the very top players, unless that's what he wants to do. Who are we to say that he should retire?

agreed.

Lleyton should hang up the racket.

Does he really want to flog his guts getting back to (apparent) full fitness & get back to some mediocre (by his 2000/2001) ranking......lower top-10 at best.

He just doesn't have the game anymore to trouble the top-5 except perhaps a Djokovic or Del Potro on say grass @ Wimbledon (I know he beat Del Potro last year - but Del Potro is work-in-progress on that surface & will only get better...Hewitt won't)

I know it's about winning slams but he hasnt really figured as a real force at slam since 2005 Oz open final & was soundly beaten by an inspired Safin.....& these days it will only get tougher to win a slam....there are just too many players around who can deal with Hewitt's i'll say one-dimensional game & give him plenty more in return.

He will be inducted to the tennis hall of fame in due course...& why shouoldn't he.....youngest ever #1 ranked player etc etc...he deserves that....but those days have long gone & in all seriousness for a player of his age, dodgy injuries (& he keeps saying he's in the best shape anytime prior to a slam) & his once hallowed status/ranking.....he should hang up the racket. He just doesn't really cut it anymore at the business end of either slams or masters series tourneys.

Maybe time for him to join the C7 commentary booth next year ?

again, I say-perhaps new training methods are needed-they don't have the game/strategy to compare to Federer and other long lasting champions...-it's often not about physicality but about perception and planning!

Both Hewitt and Nadal have styles that take a huge toll on their body compared with e.g. Federer, Sampras. Consider also Del Potro (recurring wrist problems) Nalbandian (similar hip problem to Hewitt, struggling to regain match readiness) - sucess comes at a cost.

Like with Murray in 2009 and so far in 2010 - anyone can climb the rankings by the dozen, when they have little points to defend from the previous year. Why do you think Murray made his statement about being #1 by the end of 2009 when he played in Australia? Because he was banking on Roger's dominance to end, and Rafa's knees to give out. Only one happened. By years end, after scaling to #2 with a rocket, he ended outside the top 3.
