I got breached for saying 'send in da clowns'? What is that about?

Nicolina, again, popularity has nothing to do with on-court success. I was talking general reaction to a player by the average fan. Andre was always loved, regardless of ranking. Rios never won over the masses - nothing against him, it is just a fact.

I stand by my claims that if one of Andre or Marcello tested positive (and it was made known to people) then Andre's would've had a far greater impact on the sport.

hello...

Countries outside of South America would not care or seen a lot of Rios. In 1998-1999 however he was dominating the ATP tour by mostly winning on clay and therefore was drawing the crowds. Dont forget there is SA migrants in Florida, Miami where Rios has won there on hardcourts.
Rios did not duplicate this in the Slams, apart from reaching the Australian Open final one year.

I agree.Agassi in particular has been and still is news in America. He had that movie/rock star appeal which cushioned his fame during the one or two years his game fell apart.Who gives a rats about Rafter and Rios! Who would be buying a book about the exploits of Sampras,Rafter or Rios?Andre Agassi is a very interesting guy who re-invented himself mid career.A Jennifer Capriati biography would be a great read too.

Ooooh boy...I'm sure everyone loved Andre from 1990 to 1996, stopped loving him in 97 and 98, returned to loving him from 1999! He was still a crowd favourite and was still cheered on by the masses, hoping that he'd find some of his old form - which he eventually did.

Rios? When was he popular? Outside of Sth America he was never widely embraced, great player at the time, but never a crowd favourite.

Rafter was really Australia's man, the rest of the world didn't rate him that highly, especially before Sept 97 when he hadn't won a slam. Even then he was widely labeled a 'one slam wonder'.

My point being, had the ATP had a drugs scandal involving Rios, Rafter or Chang in 1997, it would've been big news for a while, but the game would've moved on - think Petr Korda.

But Agassi and Samprass were the BIG 2 and tennis would've been dealt a massive blow had either of them been found out to be drug cheats.

Today, if Federer or Nadal were busted (even if one of them had slipped to 100+ in the world) it would cause a massive stir, way more so than even a Del Potro or Soderling.

That's just the way it goes, the more popular a player, the more damage the games reputation suffers with a drug bust. It has very little to do with rankings or the players current form.

hello...

But not in 1997 or 1998. He was married to Brooke and their marriage was constantly in the media all to the detriment of his tennis career.
The Biggest names and Crowd interests during those years was Pete, Patrick Rafter, Marcelo Rios.
Andre when he bothered to play did not reach very far in the Grand Slams in 97/98 to attract Crowd and media interest.

Since when does 'biggest name' ever mean 'best player'?

Andre was the most popular player in the world for most of the 90s, was a bloke crowds flocked to watch (even when he was ranked 100+) and has enormous influence on a generation of tennis fans/players.

Hello...

Twoleftfeet it's been awhile since we last talked. So nice to hear from you once more.
OK Andre's ranking may have been as high as 6 in 1998 but he failed to acheive anything of distinction in the Grand Slams.
It wasn't until '99 that he completely turned his career around, winning Roland Garros and the US Open and reaching the Wimbledon final.
He also became number 1 ranked player in '99.

You're one year out - at the end of 1998 Agassi was ranked 6 in the world - 1997 was indeed his low point - ranked outside the top 100 - but he turned it around in 1998

"He was the biggest name in the game at that point (yes, bigger than Sampras)".

hello...

Actually no. In 1997 and 1998 It was Sampras and Pat Rafter. Agassi "at that point" was considered a has-been and written-off by many commentators and critics. 1999 was the turning point of his career.

hello...

I am often amazed by how on the tennis messageboards the way some people dislike certain players to such an extent that it arouses such feelings they then feel it appropraite to post their "opinions" on messageboards such as this one.

Why can't fans simply just enjoy the tennis?

Andy isn't the worst. I think Hewitt is the worst of them all. Andy is becoming more humble. But he is known to get a mouthy on the court.

Re:WHAT'S HAPPENING IN TENNIS ! Reply to this message
Clearly the ATP felt anything like that involving Agassi would result in insurmountable trouble for international Tennis. He was the biggest name in the game at that point (yes, bigger than Sampras).

I also remember Rafter beating him in that year's US Open. Agassi claimed Rafter was no chance of the title (which he won) and then immediately claimed he was a one slam wonder (a claim backed up by Johnny Mac - which proved to be off the mark 12 months later).

Perhaps this dip in the usual Agassi 'charm' was a result of the meth? I'm sure people on Ice don't have the best judgement!

I think '97 was the start of his comeback from oblivion, I remember Rafter beaing him at the US Open that year.

More surprising to me is the story that he lied to officials AND got away with it, with seeming no publicity at the time. I don't know if that would happen today, some journalist would find out about it somehow.

Andre Agassi has admitted to taking Crystal Meth in 1997.

The part I find hard to believe is that this came AFTER he thought it was a good idea to dress like a pirate and dump Brooke Shields!

from smh.com.au

"Two tennis players are suspected of breaking Sweden's sex law by allegedly soliciting prostitutes ahead of the Stockholm Open, police said on Monday. The two men, identified only as foreign citizens, were detained as they entered a hotel in Stockholm early on Sunday with their escorts, said investigation leader Jonas Trolle. Sweden's prostitution law punishes those who pay for sex but not the prostitutes."
