| I see. Ok then, comes to think of it. Blake playing more doubles can only help his singles game. |

| If they win Wimbledon, Blake and Fish could be a good doubles team for the U.S. in the Davis Cup. |

that's ok nicolaharris. I know your post was not intended for me, my dear lady.
I also know what you were trying to say.
grsydney you seem to have forgotten to mention Blake's doubles partner Mardy Fish. Not good my friend. |

hello...
Hey leave James alone. He never did anything to hurt you (as in whoever started up this thread) or anyone. I'm sure he'll know when it is time "to go"! |

Hi twoleftfeet...
You're words are as always very wise. I believe Zed's latest thread on Blake was designed to irritate all the Blake fans not just grsydney.
Come on Zed/sistertwisted hows about answering my earlier question or at the very least the one where I asked - why highlight only James Blake's snatch defeat at the jaws of victory.
Other players have "Choked" not just JB. |

| One of the commentators with a sense of humour refers to Davydenko as the "brick wall" - the ball just keeps coming back and back and back - no special shot just makes his opponent hit one more shot. I have often commented that he would be really good at poker - seldom shows any change in expression/emotion - just plays a solid competent game. I don't think too many players enjoy having him as an opponent. |

| I think Davydenko has actually over-achieved, not as much as Hewitt, but still quite a lot. He doesn't really have any special facets to his game, just solid groundies and good court movement, yet he's managed to spend quite a lot of time in the top 10. |

He also had a reputation for tanking some matches. |

Wow quite an intense thread this one.
sistertwisted what I would ask of you is this-
1. How and why did you come up with such a title to this
thread ?
2. Why just pick on James Blake regarding "snatching
defeat...." comment.
3. While his record in the Grand slams isn't exactly
impressive he has been a rock for the U.S.A Davis cup
team for a number of years which is most commendable.
D.C. is just as "Elite" as any of the Slams! |

There are plenty of your so called under achievers in the top 20 go ppick on them Ferrer Berdych Robredo and Nalbandian to name but a few.
The dicision is Blakes alone if he wishes to retire and believe me he doesn't . |

| Can't really see why this means he should stop playing - I would assume he plays because he is doing something he enjoys and earning a good living doing so - so he may not ever win a Slam - neither will about 98% of the other ATP guys - are they supposed to give up, or can they keep playing and do their best. |

and so if you can name me some titles (without looking at the ATP site, don't cheat now, lol) the other four players have won. Most tennis fans would be very hard-pressed to remember any. The 4 guys have been long retired and I think of the four Grand Slam under-acheivers Larsson's best G.S result was losing to Sampras in the Australian in a R16 match where he was up two sets to love but lost in 5.
The point is the past underacheivers are always remembered and noted for what they acheived in the Slams being as they are the holy grail of tennis - and perhaps the Davis cup comes secondary, but not what they've tournaments they won on the ATP tour.
In years to come the same principle applies to Blake, only in his case it'll be worse. |

| sister - if all players followed your logic - retire if you can't succeed at the "elite" level - we would not have many players left. I am sure however that no player would mind being included with the names you listed. |

The tital of this stupid thread says nothing about Grand Slam appearances and cheievements. It was a stated fact that he should go and noone of you have come up with a convincing arguement that he should.
Ask many players and to them the so presitgious award for the year is to win the Masters Cup. He came dame close to it having beaten many top players to get to the final to comne against the brick wall of Roger Federer. |

Yes and what's this to do with Blake's Grand Slam record in singles ?
How many more times does it need to be said ?
Blake is a G.S. underacheiver - a good davis cup competiter yes, but still a G.S. underacheiver. As was Forget, Hlasek,
Magnus Larsson, Carl Uwe Steeb, etc all were good davis cup players and won ATP titles but could never translate this success to the Slams. |
