Now Vince saying that Rafa will be playing with heart is something I agree with.
I never said that he was 100% fit in the first place. There is no way that two weeks off, even with the best of treatment will cure a severe case of tendinitis. The worst of it may be gone but it will still be there. The thing he and his medical team should be working on is finding the cause of the problem and stopping it from happening again.

Personally I think that his knees have never recovered from the end of last year where he had to take an extended break. I think that if he does need surgery he should have it now and then take the time to heal. He's young and seems otherwise heathly so it wouldn't take him long to get back to the top if all went well.

Ok beautiful lady, let me put it you another way...

If Nadal plays, and it's a big IF, He is playing with a significant injury that is not going to get better (and don't believe the nonesense that it's tendonitis as it's not).

He will be playing with his heart.

It may be only 2 weeks off but it was time off through injury. If he had lost to Soderling and been fit he would have been on the pratice court for several hours each day. He would also have played the Queens Club event where he would have gained match practice on grass.

My Dear Lady what do you mean time off thru injury!!!!

It's only been 2 weeks since he played at the french and lost to the swede Soderling. I fail to see how 2 weeks time away could be construed as "time off through injury".

Re:wimbledon 2009 Reply to this message
Nadal's problem is that his style of play puts a big price on his body. It is not 'rusty' or 'unsure'

His game against Lleyton would have been a test to see whether a slightly adapted 'roll your arm over' style gameplay would see him through the first week. It would take a little getting used to given he runs down everything and relies on a power game rather than strategy.

Lleyton would be seen as a tough '4th round/first week' opponent and Nadal lost in straight sets. Warinka is perhaps his "top 10" opponent

Losing to LH suggests to Nadal that he would be lucky to get through to the second week. If he was to win agains Stan, then he might look at taking that gamble and hope his body is ready for week 2.

Lose and you will see him in for surgery now rather than after Wimbledon.

Either way I don't see him contesting the US Open.

Re:wimbledon 2009 Reply to this message
Vince - I said "a little rusty and unsure" not just rusty and I stand by that. He would be both after time off through injury.

I haven't heard that he is to have surgery on his knees but if that is the case it is a worry. But then it all depends on what the problem is and what is causing it.

Bearyfolk Now COME ON! Get with it Dear Lady !!!!

Nadal's problem is a lot more serious than being "a little rusty". If Nadal is going to have surgery done to his knees? It ain't just merely tendonitis. What's more following the operation Nadal's knees may never be the same again.

Hope Rafa's knees manage to hold out for Wimbledon - wouldn't be the same without him. On the other hand, it would be good to see some new players step up. Can you imagine if Murray won - the British would go wild. I don't think there has been a British (Mens) Champion since the Open era began....

Re:wimbledon 2009 Reply to this message
I wouldn't have expected much from Rafa in this exhibition match. It only stands to reason that he would be a little rusty and unsure of himself coming back from injury (particularly if he know's he's still not 100%) and playing his first match on a new surface. The test will be how he feels today and if he improves playing Stan on Friday.

I've also read comments about his knees not being taped. Depending on the problem and where it is, taping may not help the problem and could actually make it worse.

As a Rafa fan I'm hoping that he is fit to play next week, but if he's not I'd rather see him miss Wimbledon and the next couple of tournaments so as to avoid any long term damage and possible shortening of his career. Even if he losses the #1 ranking, his health is more important.

Re:wimbledon 2009 Reply to this message
Nadal is clearly unfit, but like Roger last year, he won't take a break or offer excuses (the media will though!).

I think if Nadal can't play is complete game, Federer is a better than even money chance to lift the trophy again. Even at the peak of his powers last year, Nadal still had to work very hard to beat Federer in the final.

I hope Murray doesn't buckle under expectations, because he is the only other man with a chance to win - a GENUINE chance to win, that is.

Anyone else will have to hope for a miracle.

Re:wimbledon 2009 Reply to this message
I don't like the sounds of this-

LONDON, June 18 (Reuters) - Champion Rafael Nadals Wimbledon participation still hung in the balance on Thursday after his first outing on grass this season did not go according to plan.
The world number one, troubled by a knee problem since being knocked out of the French Open in the fourth round last month, struggled with his movement during an exhibition match against Australian Lleyton Hewitt, which he lost 6-4 6-3.
"Rafa is having difficulties bending his knees and it (seems) that his various treatments are not enough," his coach and uncle Toni Nadal told reporters.
Asked if the Spaniard would turn up to defend his title on Monday at the All England Club, he added: "I don't know, we have to wait for tomorrow".
The 23-year-old will decide whether to play at Wimbledon after taking part in a second exhibition match against St *** las Wawrinka at the Hurlingham Club on Friday.
Although Nadal opted to test his fitness at Hurlingham his body language did not look too encouraging as he went through the motions during the one hour 20 minute encounter.
As Toni Nadal urged him to "bend down" to the ball during the second set, the Spaniard appeared to mutter, "I can't".
The match had started promisingly for Nadal as he stepped on court without wearing any support around his troublesome knees.
In his first service game, which lasted four deuces and eight minutes, he bent low to flick a volley winner and also ran around court during a 17-shot rally.
But as the contest progressed, Nadal and his camp began to get more and more worried.
By the time the match finished, Nadal looked world weary and barely resembled the man who ended Roger Federer's five-year reign at Wimbledon last July.

Yes Vince, always nice to see Sharapova get a break. With half a chance she will win the whole thing. Most of the others are so bloody boring.Hewitt on the other hand I can't stand but he did warrant being seeded.

31 (29) Victor Hanescu (Romania)
32 (34) Albert Montanes (Spain)

these two are hardly what you call household names are they?

Surely it would have made sense to give Hewitt the 2002 champion a seeding rather than Montanes?.

What do you think?

Re:wimbledon 2009 Reply to this message
good to see the committee were generous and given Maria Sharapoova the 2004 champion #24 seeding (current ranking is #59).

Pity they weren't as generous with Hewitt, however.

and what about Dinara Safina being seeded ahead of Serena or Venus Williams, both past winners? I don't agree with it?
