I am a bit of each - I love the Federer/Nadal rivalry, evey sport needs something like that. Golf fans still talk about the 'big 3' of Palmer, Nicholas and Player dominating the sport in the 60's. Tennis will long remember this era for the dominance of these 2.
At the same time, new faces is always refreshing to see. The rise of Nadal stopped the Federer dominance from being boring, IMO. 2 dominant players still leaves the 'who will win' aspect. Before Nadal, most tournamenmts were 'who will Federer beat in the final' affairs.
Maybe a third or fourth player of genuine class is needed, because right now the only possible winners of the big events are the usual 2. Murray is perhaps the only real outside chance for Wimbledon - but he'd have to play the tournament of his life! |

"To be honest, I don't care who the best of all time is, I just know for a FACT, that these 2 are head and shoulders above the rest of the modern day players".
Amen and Hallelujaih to that!!!!!
But by the same token am i the only fan in the world that looks forward to seeing new personalities and contrasting players. Everywhere you go or read ...It's Federer It's Nadal ad infinitum. |

Tennis is the winner from the Federer/Nadal era. Both humble champions that respect the game, its traditions and their rivals.
The work both of these champion players/people do off the court to help others is unmatched in the history of the game.
They have also managed to capture the imagination of a generation of tennis fans. Their Wimbledon finals in 07 and 08, as well as their 09 Aus Open final, will go down as some of the most exciting tennis ever witnessed.
To be honest, I don't care who the best of all time is, I just know for a FACT, that these 2 are head and shoulders above the rest of the modern day players.
Between them they have won almost every grand slam title in the past 4 years (all but 1 I think - Novak's Aus Open win in 08).
There is no reason why Federer can't win 20 slam titles, Nadal could claim 12 or 13 of his own. |

"the guy beat all comers in all four Slams in the one calender year and then he did again 7 years later.Federer doesn't even come close."
Federer won 3 out of 4 in 2004, 2006 and 2007. Three is quite close to four, no?
Yeah zedhead's hatred toward one man is scary.
I want to make it clear that I myself am not a Federer fan myself but with Zedhead it's almost like an anguish and a profound resentment directed to a man whose made it in the tennis world while he failed to. maybe he's a Mark David Chapman in the making.
Question zedhead - has there ever been anyone else you despised as much as Federererer? |

wow...
Now this place has been getting nicer since i last posted.
nicola dear, so where is the link to this article? Also when excatly did Laver make those comments regarding Federerererer? I ask you this because Federer is 27 years old, not 25 (as printed in the article). Having said that, it does sound like Laver's words as he's a humble man. He's also a LIVING LEGEND that more fans should be respecting. |

| "The greatest of all time" is always a hard one in any sport, different times and differing opinions. Roger's carreer is not finished yet so a final call on where he stands exactly is not able to be made yet, time will tell. |

hello...
From Rod Laver (source: Time magazine)
The most impressive aspect of Roger Federer's ascendancy to the top of the tennis world is the way he carries himself as a champion. It's quite unusual. He just lets his racquet do the talking. There's no entourage at his beck and call. He doesn't have a bunch of coaches and trainers micromanaging everything he does. Roger has so much natural talent, they would just disrupt it if they muddled his mind. He exudes energy, and you just know he enjoys the camaraderie of all his competitors. Tennis had lost that positive vibe over the years. His game is so spectacular and graceful—I can't tell you how many times I've asked friends, "Did you see Roger's shot last week, the crosscourt winner he hit a zillion miles per hour?" He has this amazing knack for raising his game just a notch more than an opponent. He never gets rattled if he's down. You can only marvel.
Every time I speak to Roger, I sense no ego on his part. He asks me questions about how I prepared for big matches—Roger has a clear appreciation for the history of tennis. (Plus, these days, I should be the one peppering him with questions. He's the big star!) When you're talking to Roger, he makes you feel important—whether you're a fan, an opposing player or an old geezer like me. People often ask me if Roger, 25, is the greatest player of all time. Let's wait until the end of his career before making the "best ever" judgment. He should definitely be in every conversation. One thing is for sure: he's the best player of his time and one of the most admirable champions on the planet. That's certainly something worth crowing over. The beauty is, Roger Federer won't. |

| Two Grand Slams not the just the one that has eluded Roger Federer. That's right Rod Laver won all four Slams in the one calender year twice not just once. And he did it seven years apart. In fact he was 31 years old when he did it the second time.Sampras,McEnroe,Borg ,Agassi even Federer worship the guy. Because it all happened a long time ago it's all too easy to say it was a different era,the technology was old hat, only two different surfaces, the pressure wasn't as great back then.Helloooooooooo the guy beat all comers in all four Slams in the one calender year and then he did again 7 years later.Federer doesn't even come close. |
