| Dan Maskell, John Barrett, Joe McCauley,[14] Ted Schroeder, and Tony Trabert rank Laver as the best of all time. Schroeder has been quoted by Alan Trengove as saying, "You take all the criteria - longevity, playing on grass and clay, amateur, professional, his behaviour, his appearance - in all criteria, Laver's the best player of all time." Trabert said in January 2008, "I still maintain that Rod Laver is the best player who ever played the game because he's done something no one has ever done in the 120 or 140-year history of our sport: he won the Grand Slam as an amateur and he won the Grand Slam as a pro. If someone in some other sport held a world record no one else had, you would say that person was the best in that sport. So in my view, you've got to say Laver is the best player of all time."I will add that Laver is smarter than Federer. It has also been stated often that Federer is too pompous. The nice guy image is a charade. |

| Rod Laver Arena is appropriately named after Australia's greatest male tennis player and one of the top sportspersons in Australia's history.Margaret Court just like Roy Emerson beat a lot of deadbeats to get their Slam numbers. They stayed as long as possible on the amateur side when all the great players had left.Of course women's tennis was pretty lousy back then. |

There was no real competition, and mens tennis is several levels above womens tennis but i strongly agree
No-one has ever gotten close to what Margaret Court achieve in her career.
In all honestly, I still actually am a little personally offeneded that Melbournes main arena is Rod Laver Arena, whilst Court2 is assigned to Margaret Court,'
Nothing to do with feminism btw.The mens tour was harder by far and Laver would have destroyed court (IMHO) in a head to head. But by merit amongst ones contemporaries, Ms Court deserves the accolades.
She is the Bradman of Tennis and her records will never be bettered by anyone, male or female. |

Margaret Court is the greatest of all time !
I'm a huge Rod Laver fan, but even his wonderful record pales in comparison to Margaret Court's:
- 62 Slam titles (24 singles, 19 women's doubles, and 19 mixed doubles)
- 2 calendar year Grand Slams (in singles & mixed doubles)
- 2 career Boxed Sets (All four slams in singles, doubles, and mixed!)
I know what many will say, the depth wasn't there etc... but you can't blame any player for a lack of good competition. She beat the best the world had to offer again and again and again.
And, like Laver, she's an Aussie ! |

For Nicolina, this is all i will add to this thread.
This is to help others who don't understand why it may be impossible to compare between pre-Open & post-Open eras
Comparing GS results between these two is not possible due to Laver not being able to compete for several years being a pro from 1963 until the onset of the Open era.
Pros were definitely much more capable players than the amateurs at the time, as Laver found out after winning the GS of 1962, then getting hammered in 1963.
The other thing that makes comparisons more difficult is that the pro circuit until 1968 was more like an exhibition circuit. A few handfuls of pros would compete in tours and very regularly played against each other. Hundreds of games head to head in lots of small tournaments. Kind of like the masters series where to top 8 only compete.
Of these - in the early 60's Pancho Gonzalez (who married Andre Agassi's older sister) was a standout, and then from 65-68 Laver was.
During this time Laver had a win-loss ratio similar to (but certainly not better than)Federer from 2004-08. Federer also routinely disposed of the top 10 of his era during this time
He was the Federer from his era, but the way i see it statistics do not provide the best way to adjudge.
The ability to win big tournaments and play flawless tennis are the real markers, and both seemed more than capable of this.
I am not convinced Laver played the same sort of flawless tennis Federer displayed. But he was the best of his time by far. That'll do me. |

Winning the grand slam is the "holy grail" yes - but it not the sole indicator of best ever.
Take a look at this link (go down to Open Era - and then by player)

Zed
The players who think Laver is the best have never played the game under todays conditions.. They are of the old school...
It is a different and harder game.
Laver was the best of his time.. Now another player will be the best of a newer era. In 25 yrs time it will a newcomer all over again....
How can you compare over such a long period and state just ONE person is the best..? |

| Federer is thinking that winning Wimbledon and owning 15 Slams will make him the greatest.Dan Maskell, John Barrett, Joe McCauley,[14] Ted Schroeder, and Tony Trabert rank Laver as the best of all time.
