My friend i believe I made that point. Whilst I'm not a Nadal fan, Unless RF wins at least twice versus Nadal in the Slams. I for one won't proclaim Federererer as GOAT. In fact it would make sense to freeze Nadal's ranking until the U.S. Open where he may return.
--------------------
He did, wimbledon 06-07
While Nadal has a winning h2h against Federer at the moment, you have to remember that besides on clay, Federer does have a winning record (all matches) against Nadal 5-4. And for Grand Slam final not on clay, they are even at 2-2. I don't think Federer has to prove himself against that record and surely, Nadal reaching his prime while Federer slowly begining to decline, a future h2h in favour of Nadal is highly likely.
If Federer wasn't the 2nd best clay courter during the last few years, or if Nadal was more consistent on grass/hard-court before 2008/09, the Nadal-Federer h2h would've been more even. So you can see that h2h stat is a bit deceiving. |

hello...
I think because of the way Rafa plays the game, his body is starting to react and he will get one injury or another as he starts to get older. I am missing him sooooooo much. I reckon he needs to play less tennis if/when he comesback.
Also hope his ranking does not fall anymore than 2. |

I agree, Borg's legacy is in the fact that all his achievments were reached by 25, then he decided to move on from the game.
You can look at it 2 ways - either he didn't have the ticker for longevity (an important factor in 'greatness'), or he was simply even more brilliant than the record books show.
I, for one, think he is streets ahead of the next best claycourter, Nadal. But, if Nadal somehow keeps his body in one piece until he is 30, and adds a few more clay titles to his CV, then I may rethink that. |

And Borg was 25 when he won his last Clay court title and the year that he retired.
The Greatest Claycourt player title still belongs to Borg and hopefully Rafa will pass Borg's numbers..but he hasn't yet |

Wow, 30 clay titles - Nadal has won 25 clay titles and is only just 23 years old. He'll pass Bjorg easily. I'd hardly call him being (as you put it) "a looooong way to get to that stage"
He also has the longest winning streak on clay. But you knew that! |

"I beg to differ on that point Geoff but we will have to "agree to disagree on the best claycourter"
No way can you call Nadal the greatest claycourter ever.
Borg won 30 Clay court titles including 6 at Roland Garas. Rafa has a looooong way to get to that stage. he will probably get there but Borg is still the greatest clay courter |

I beg to differ on that point Geoff but we will have to agree to disagree on the best claycourter.
However, the fact still remains - Federer has a substantial losing record against Nadal and until he is in front during the H2H and can consistently beat one of his peers, you can't really call him the greatest. Bestowing the title of GOAT is not to be taken lightly and the recipient must excel in ALL areas. |

Excuse me.. Borg is still the greatest claycourt player of all time. try 6 or it is 7 French titles. Ture Raa is doing great but he still has a long way to gop yet to get that title. If you say the best play curently playing on clay court yes by far. |

| Nadal is the GOAT easily, when he finishes his career he'll have over 20 careers slams to Federer's 14-15 (depending on tonight's final). |

What I was referring to Vince was your statement about the greatest ever not that I dont hope Federer will win. I just said before that Roddick I thought would win the semi against Murray and he did.
Back to the grreatest ever title:
QUOTES TODAY:
SAMPRAS: What he's done over the past five years has never ever been done and probably will never happen again. He goes down as th greatest ever"
Borg: For me Roger is the greatest player ever who played the tennis game"
But we all know the great ZB thinks differently. What a creap to argue facts spoken by two of the greats of this game. |

Yes ru_tetoi, I am aware he was there and was beaten by Soderling in Rd 4. Most unfortunate!
I thought he looked completely out of sorts for the whole tournament - probably combination of his sore knees and those pesky family issues he is experiencing ATM. |

Vince - what a good idea!
Apparently Nadal will be playing Canada - Aug 8th.
And when Federer has a WINNING H2H against Nadal, then I will agree that is the GOAT. |

Federer is a great player but cannot yet be considered as GOAT when he holds a losing record against the greatest claycourter of all time.
Seriously, to be considered the best of the best, you need to be able to beat the best of the best, all the time.
Until Roger can beat a fully fit Rafa at say, Roland Garros, I think we will need to reserve judgement on his status. Rafa holds a commanding lead in their H2h, 13-7.
Let's not forget Andy Murray - another player who holds a very good lead in the H2H department, 6-2.
Really, Rafa did Roger a favour by winning all those clay court titles during the European clay season and aggravating his knees. Roger was a lot more fresh (less match time during the clay court season) than Rafa at Madrid and this helped him win that title. Good on him for winning it too, it had been a while between drinks for him and really helped his confidence at a time when levels were low.
As for Roland Garros - well, lucky Roger again - being maybe the 2nd best claycourter out there, it would have been surprising if he hadn't won the title with the absence of Nadal. It must have been a huge mental burden off his shoulders not to have Rafa there - everyone knows how Rafa owns Roger mentally...
No, not the greatest - not yet. |
