| well it seems that Federer might get his wish and be #1 once more. Roddick is no competition to his chances. Will be interesting to see as the draw unfolds who the contenders will be |

Hahahahaha, A-Rod! Hahahahaha - thanks for that!
Seriously though, Nadal pulling out is a massive blow for the tournament. Though it opens the door for a new face to win it, should Federer stumble at some point.
Andy Murray is an obvious candidate, Soderling too if he can repeat his form from the dirt. But, honestly, there isn't a lot out there that you can see genuinely troubling Federer.
Tennis is a funny game, but I would think the odds for Federer will make him unbackable to return to the throne. |

| After getting trounced by Hewitt in a little exhibition match Nadal's Uncle Tony[his coach] has said it is highly unlikely that Nadal will front up against Wawrinka for another match this Friday.I doubt very much that Nadal will play at Wimbledon. This will open the door for Andy Roddick to at least get a shot in the final. |

| A very civil response indeed.I too have the view that things need to be played out a bit further yet.If Federer were to win the Grand Slam at least once then together with the rest of his achievements he may deserve to be called the equal of Laver. |

Welll we all have read so many times froom one poster that Federer will never win another Grand slam ( and he di) He will nver be in another final and he was. The man is now out to recalim his Wimbledon title and I for one can't wait for the enxt two weeks to be on.
We still have to wait for some hours yet for Rafa's decision but it is not looking very good right now which will be a shame as so many people were looking forward to a rematch of the two top players in this sport. |

| With Nadal struggling to be fit, and Federer's ability to dominate everyone else, who is to say he won't have 16 GS titles by October? From there, form/fitness permitting, there is nothing to suggest he can't claim 20 GS titles! If he gets to that sort of figure, I think the debate can well and truly be put to bed. ESPECIALLY, if he knocks off Nadal in a couple more finals. |

Gday all, apologies for not getting back here sooner to answer your reply.Firstly, thank you Zedstar for answering the Question. One shall overlook the suggestion of my possible lack of intelligence and the suggestion of a blind outlook,of the greatness of every modern day tennis superstars Hero Rod Laver.I'm not to sure where the lack of respect to this Legend of the games greatness,is situated in my post,so apologies if I have offended you. Both Sampras and Federer have stated Laver is the best during their career/careers as well.So at the moment you would have to say he is the best of all time. It's a shame so many of his best years were missed out.Just as Bradman, because of the War lost about 7 years of his prime. Both men could have posted records that could almost never have been surpassed.
Back to the original question now.As much as you wish to dismiss it,playing on more different surfaces will make it harder, that is just plain logical.A few other things that would probably make it harder now,are;1.The technology in the game brings the ability of lesser players that much closer to the abilities of todays greats.Just as it has done in Golf.(Woods is a freak)2.Because it is easier to travel long distances now Tennis like other sports has been opened up to more people and nations of the world. In other words, more people have access to the game than then.
These Zedstar are just my thoughts,so at the moment Federer is not the best ever, but lets just wait and see what the situation is when his career is finished shall we.After all this is what I did say.Until then,I am more than happy to have Rod Laver as the greatest.
Cheers Dave. |

what are you on about now Zb. Loosing your arguements again.
Sushi asked:
"so grsydney is it fair to say that Federer is the greatest of the modern era and Laver is the greatest from the past era making them both the "greatest player" to have graced the courts"
I just happen to agree with him. There was no question of a new greatest. Get your eyes tested zombie. Or maybe the drink has affected your bain cells if you have any. |

peenpong.
nothing we say or do do will ever change that pig headed ZB. He lives in the past and that is what it is. Sure Laver
was the greatest player of his era. but that is where it ends. We are now in a different era. new surfaces to contend with...new rackets...new balls..new technology.
We now have two players Federer and Nadal whose rivalry we are all enjoying and will continue to enjoy for some years hence |

Dave
There you have it.
Everything you wanted to know about tennis has been laid in front of you by someone who knows EVERYTHING there is to know about tennis...
The rest of us are in AWE of this person.
His name is Zedstar and if he uses derogatory words and names against you. dont worry, it means he has run out of his vocubulary.. which is pretty limited.
He leads a very sad life living only for these threads. You only have to glance from time to time and you will see he has replied to every thread several times in a day.
It is very sad.
There are a few of us who have brains and opinions... so if you would like to contribute from time to time we shall be happy to respond in a civilised and intellectual manner. Its ok.. he doesnt know the meaning of these words so we are quite safe..
Look forward to hearing from you Dave... You made good points... stay in touch for the brains amongst us.. |

| The U.S ,the Australian and Wimbledon were all on grass and the French was on clay.It would seem to me that most very good players who can win on hardcourt and grass don't have the same success on clay. And those that can win on hardcourt and clay don't have the same success on grass.I view the clay surface as the most awkward to adapt to,not the most difficult. Most great, grass court players also do well on hardcourts. The problem for Federer is he has not been able to justify the claims of being the greatest because he couldn't complete a Grand Slam in a calender year. |
