| Because he is still living an illusion,a fantasy that only he has a chance at a calender year Grand Slam, that he should be the favourite for every tournament he enters. There have been many almost legends in sporting history who didn't know when to quit and he is one of them. |

Its because he thinks that way that he is still No. 1 in soooo many ways.
Murray on a good day is a threat but not everyone has a good day when they want.
I think Murray will win the Oz Open but dont take away from Federer... there are many more tournaments this year... |

| It will take him a while to regain his number one spot. The rankings work on a 12 month rotating basis and Nadal is a traditional struggler this time of year. Nadal will be number 1 for at least 6 more months. |

| Totally agree there Zed. He does always like to push himself forward doesn't he. His comments this week about being surprised that Murray is favourite with the bookies got me. I mean why wouldn't Murray be favourite, he beat Fed twice in a week. |

| I don't think it is just Murray. Federer enjoys the limelight and the glory he basks in which Murray and others are threatening to take away.He is constantly reminding everyone who listens of his achievements and his deserving of being number one again. There is a monster lurking beneath the surface. |

| The top players are always vulnerable against the virtual unknowns in the very early rounds. Their coaches can only work out counter tactics against players they know about.I am sure someone of note will get bushwhacked early on. |

| yes I almost sure that Federer will win at least two more slams, and what you are forgetting is that he has won 13 grand slams, where are the rest of the field, apart from Rafa, you show not be crowing about Andy Murray until he has won grand slams |

| I think they will get a big shock if Federer is back to peak fitness. I don't think they are really expecting a big comeback. The only ones that know he is capable of doing it are the players that have been there while he has been on top. Nadal, Murray, Davydenko, Blake, Roddick. I don't think the new kids actually realise what he is capable of. |

| Peenpong what I think it depends upon is his fitness. Over those 4 years, thats what he had. There was no one on the circuit, apart from Nadal maybe, who could last it with Federer. The longer the match went, the less chance his opponent had of winning it. Federer never got tired during that time. It was only his illness that hampered him this year with his fitness and this took affect on his ability to perform at his peak. A fully fit Federer next year and its look out for the new kids on the block. |

As I said on one of the 7000 threads I have just written on!!!! yes Im awake...
If Federer can come back as the exquisite player he has demonstrated he is, then YES, of course he can be at the top again. If not, he is still an exquisite player and always will be. |

Out of all the determination Nadal has, I dont think he'll be able to play in the Davis Cup. At least he shouldn't due to the injury. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play though.
Yes. I don't know why they changed the rules. I've had a brief browse through it a couple of weeks ago and the tennis players on the circuit unfortunately let it pass straight under the radar. The unfortunate thing with them is that they have way too much on to read the fine print when something like this comes in. Someone has snuck it in for some reason which I don't know. |

Bernie, I don't think Federer will pull out either. Needs to defend those all important 650 points and he only has this one last committment for the season unlike Nadal who has DC. Although, I was just reading about Nadal's tendinitis and he could be in doubt for the DC too - bloody great @$#@*# I may have to go into hibernation until January!
Take a read of the link - it explains this new rankings system. From what I can gather, the only people it will benefit will be the ones already at the top of the pile. Those players playing futures etc will now have to work a lot harder to compete in elite tournaments. Not very fair really.
They have increased ranking points available by a certain percentage in GS, MS etc but have not applied the same percentage to other tournaments. How are the up and comers to get through?

I see we've had Nadal pull out already of the Masters Cup tlf. I doubt Federer will now. It starts on friday.
650 points to retain for the Cup. I don't know why but all the tournaments have their points going up next year. Not in such a good way though. I'm not sure how it will affect the current points system and the current rankings. Whether it will be for the better for players who have won tournaments this year or for players who haven't. I haven't had a good look at it.
Will this be to Federer's advantage? |
