Fraser Gehrig has formally announced his retirement from the AFL after a failed bid to rejuvenate his career.
Gehrig called it quits at the end of St Kilda's 2007 season before opting to rejoin the Saints only months later.
But the 32-year-old was sidelined for most of the season with a crippling hand injury.
The iconic forward played 260 AFL games and kicked 549 goals, claiming two Coleman Medals.
"I'd like to thank the St Kilda Football Club for its support throughout my eight years at the club and in particular, the passionate and loyal fans that made my journey so memorable," Gehrig said in a statement.
"It's been an honour to represent the Saints for so long and the club will always hold a special place in my heart."
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon said Gehrig's determination was unquestionable.
"He is one of the greatest forwards to ever pull on a red white and black guernsey and his contribution to the Saints will not be forgotten," he said.
"Unfortunately his 2008 campaign was shortened due to injury, but he maintained a strong training and fitness regime which gave the rest of the team a significant boost.
