I would like to see Owen at Man U about as much as I'd like to see Beckham at Liverpool! No farken way, Michael!!!!

Owen is a Reds legend, I can handle him playing for anyone else, even Everton, but not United, that would suck big time. (Though, if he is rubbish for them, then it would be like bringing them down from the inside!).

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
A bit disaapointing if he would turn out to be Tevez's replacement. There is nothing wrong with getting him on as an additional player once Ronaldo and Tevez have been replaced. After all he's a free-transfer and I'm sure he will bring something to the dressing-room. But his knee is held together with paperclips and the hamstring with bluetack. If he could only get a season without injury, then he could be a decent player, but I really doubt it.

and how it affects liverpool is how u go at one team so it is obvious for anyone to show that you can sometimes live in a glass house and don't look at your own issues as well.

for Gillett to have to sell his hockey tteam for $330M that suggest there was money issues ... u would think if money was a real major issue Glasnier would sell one of his grid iron teams

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
errr ok Ronaldo wanted to go and has so for a fair while ...
Tevez also wanted to go. Man Utd wanted to keep him but were not keen on the 25M that the agent wanted to be paid for his services.

but we can agree o nthat they do get paid way too much .... not everyone is set up like Real Madrid and backed by the state and banks. Non-sp *** h players pay something like 40% tax compared to sp *** h players who cop 63% something like that anyway

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
good point rob but this effects liverpool how?

Gillett has already struck a deal to sell ice hockey team the Montreal Canadiens for around £330m.

United struck a deal to sell their players,I for one and you am sure would prefer the first option

I guess we can go on and on rob but truth be told the wages and transfers are killing teams, what they earn is pathetic considering they are just players

yes they can be a joy to watch but seeing ronaldo so greedy and all of em i guess is painful

not sure about Owen but he has plenty of experience.. just hope he is over his injuries.

could be a bit like Larsson when he played a few games for United 2 years ago.

but ryan u can keep point at Man Utd's debt but we haven't had to sell a ice hockey team to keep them going

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
United can now only afford free transfers

MICHAEL OWEN has agreed terms to join Manchester United.

The out-of-contract striker will take a 50 per cent pay cut for a shock last chance to rescue his injury-plagued career.

United boss Alex Ferguson contacted Owen, 29, on Tuesday and offered him £50,000 a week to join the champions - plus huge bonuses depending on appearances and goals.

But Owen must pass a stringent medical, which could take place as early as today, before United put pen to paper.

A source close to Owen confirmed: "It's incredible that one day Michael was contemplating a move to Hull and now Manchester United have come in.

"This is just the boost he needed and now he is hoping that everything can be agreed."

Fergie's shock move comes after United missed out on Lyon striker Karim Benzema, sold Cristiano Ronaldo for £80million and lost Carlos Tevez.

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
Some are even beginning to question Fergie’s authority at the club he has run like a personal empire for 20 years.

Sources close to the Glazer family insist they gave the manager no choice on the sale of Ronaldo as the profit from the transfer was too valuable.

Indeed, it’s believed that up to half of the £80m may be used to pay interest charges. The debt owed by the Glazers on United has grown from £556m in 2005 to £699m in April of this year.

Easy to see why the Ronaldo cash will come in handy then?

As for recruitment, United’s next target is Lyon striker Karim Benzema.

The France ace can play on the right of a three-man attack or through the middle but, with the summer market in meltdown, he will cost more than £30m.

United need more than attacking players, with the lack of creativity in midfield so crudely exposed by Barcelona in the Champions League final defeat.

Michael Carrick, Anderson, Darren Fletcher, who was banned for the final, even the injured Owen Hargreaves are decent footballers but don’t have the finesse of Andres Iniesta or Xavi.

Paul Scholes is now semi-retired and many fans feel there is an imbalance in their midfield compared to the old Roy Keane/Scholes partnership.

Meanwhile in Madrid, attempts to buy Franck Ribery from Bayern Munich for £90m and David Villa from Valencia for around £52m are ongoing as Real president Florentino Perez spends money like it is going out of fashion — backed by the banks, who will happily lend the club ludicrous amounts because it is effectively underwritten by the state.

Real have yet to ask Fergie to sell them a virus but their spending is enough to make every other football fan sick.

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
Worse, the fact they secured the signature of Kaka for £62m before they even tied up Ronaldo is the most damaging blow.

Knowing of Ronaldo’s intention to leave this summer, United attempted to put in place a contingency plan which would have seen the Brazil midfielder move to Old Trafford.

They met and discussed terms with Kaka’s father and agent, Bosco Leite, in March but the move failed to materialise.

Then Kaka signed for Real — who have also bought defender Raul Albiol — to kickstart a spree that has cost £155m so far.

Is there a silver lining for United? Not at the moment.

Should, as expected, Carlos Tevez join Manchester City this week, the crackling dissent among the fans will start to boil over.

They have sold their leading goalscorer and most effective player and, with respect, Valencia is not on the same plane as the Portuguese.

Worse, United have lost two of the famous three attacking players — Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez.

Earlier this week, Rooney made yet another plea to his manager to be played in his “correct position”, which he reckons is through the middle.

It’s not the first time in the last four months Rooney has dared defy his club manager by speaking out about his dismay at being shoved wide left.

All of which points to the sowing of seeds of discontent despite the trophies won last term.

Ferguson, however, should be the last person to be shocked by that. After all, it’s his insatiable ambition to win again and again which has driven the club and its players to new heights.

But without suitable new recruits to freshen up the squad and replace those who have left, the Red Devils will find their own standards hard to live up to.

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
MANCHESTER UNITED will get the most expensive headache in history today — a cheque for £80million and no superstars to spend it on.

The world-record fee for Cristiano Ronaldo will be paid in full this morning but the massive injection of cash has put Alex Ferguson in an invidious position.

Fergie has lost his best player and, while he has splashed out £17m on Wigan’s Antonio Valencia, there is still no one who can replace Ronaldo.

In fact, Ferguson’s memorable barb last December that he wouldn’t sell Real Madrid a virus could yet leave the Scot more red-faced than usual.

Not only have United flogged the family silver, they have been gazumped for the one player who might have been just as valuable to them... Kaka.

And who bought the brilliant Brazilian? Real Madrid of course.

As he enjoys the last few days of his summer holiday in the south of France, the United boss will have time to reflect that even the omens are against him.

The last time United sold their star No 7 to Madrid — David Beckham — they failed to win the title for three years.

United may have won three trophies last season and were runners-up in the Champions League but their boast to be the “biggest club in the world” is sounding a bit hollow.

Real’s response to Barcelona’s triumphant treble has been a spending spree that makes United look more Sunday League than Champions League.

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
FRANCK RIBERY has rocked Alex Ferguson's transfer plans by insisting he will only join Real Madrid.

Lyon striker Karim Benzema yesterday snubbed the Manchester United boss by agreeing a £30million switch to the Bernabeu.

And now France star Ribery, who was understood to be a United target, has he revealed will leave Bayern Munich - but not for Old Trafford.

The midfielder was also wanted by new Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Ribery said: "I have made up my mind, I want to leave. It will be Real Madrid or nothing.

"I would like a discussion with the Bayern directors fairly quickly."

The news is a huge blow for Ferguson, who has already lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez this summer.

He had hoped to land Benzema to boost his firepower but missed out to big-spending Real.

Ferguson poached £17m winger Antonio Valencia from Wigan on Tuesday.

But with the majority of the £80m from the Ronaldo deal burning a hole in his pocket, he is running out of world class players to sign.

Ferguson could now turn his attentions to Argentina and Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
LIVERPOOL have bust the bank to make Glen Johnson one of the highest-paid defenders in the Premier League.

Johnson hit the jackpot in his £18.5million move from Portsmouth yesterday with a £100,000-a-week, four-year deal worth a whopping £21m.

The England full-back, 24, had given the thumbs up to Liverpool last Thursday - as revealed in SunSport - but Manchester City made a late attempt to hijack the switch.

And that led to Johnson striking it rich. Kop boss Rafa Benitez had expected to get his man on far lower wages, yet when City entered the bidding it led to a hasty rethink on his personal terms.

Liverpool can wipe an immediate £7m from the fee - Pompey still owe that amount from signing Peter Crouch last year.

Johnson's capture is a huge coup for Benitez. He not only saw off City and Chelsea but also got the nod to compete for big-name players despite the club's financial plight.

Yet he will still have to off-load some stars to make further top-class signings. Javier Mascherano, Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and Andrea Dossena are all potential high-profile departures.

Benitez has been watching Johnson for the past six months and made initial tentative inquiries in the January window.

Pompey thought they had won the battle to keep him when he signed a new four-year deal. But he always insisted he wanted to prove himself at the highest level again, after only 41 appearances in his Chelsea career.

Johnson has also just enjoyed his most impressive season, capped by a star man role in the World Cup drubbing of Andorra.

Re:tranfers news Reply to this message
CARLOS TEVEZ will not sign for Manchester United this summer after he snubbed a five-year contract.
Alex Ferguson was ready to make Tevez one of the highest earners at Old Trafford after he agreed a £25.5million fee.

But after lengthy negotiations between United chief executive David Gill and Tevez's advisor Kia Joorabchian, the deal fell through.

A United statement said: "Following contact received from Carlos Tevez's advisors last night, in advance of the deadline the club set for concluding negotiations, Manchester United announces that Carlos will not be signing a new contract with the club.

"The club agreed to pay the option price of £25.5m and offered Carlos a five-year contract which would have made him one of its highest paid players.

"Disappointingly however, his advisors informed the club that, despite the success he has enjoyed during one of the club's most successful periods, he does not wish to continue playing for Manchester United.
