A player like Rukavytsya is better off going to a minor club where he has more of a chance of regular first team football.

No point going to a "big" club and gathering splinters on the bench. Just ask James Troisi.

we've lost Perth Gory's Nikita Rukavytsya to FC Twente in Holland....

imagine if he was playing for Sydney FC or Mellbourne Victory?? would become a genuine superstar and maybe a big name move to one of the EPL clubs... could still happen

anyway it's disappointing when our A-League stars go to minor clubs around the world ie Ivan Ergic to FC Basel and we never see or hear of them again :(

Joel Griffiths would be missed. Adam is replaceable. If Milligan was half as good as he thinks he is, he would be a superstar.

Newcastle will be fine. They had nothing to play for against Sydney, and played a few of the kids.

Newcastle are suited to ACL (more so than Central Coast). If they can get some reasonable results in the group stage, and make a decent signing or two in key positions before next season, they can be a force again.

By the way, there could be three new teams for the 2010-11 season. Newcastle are seriously falling apart. Gone: Adam Griffiths; Joel Griffiths; Mark Milligan. Anyone who watched the Round 21 Sydney vs. Newcastle game would have to agree that Newcastle were depressing.

Guys, we're talking about the A-League here...

The 08-09 season has, so far, been the best A-League season ever. The evenness of the top three is brilliant and Adelaide's performance in Asia, to a Melbourne supporters perspective, has been unbelievable (I've been watching it constantly).
The comments of the A-League being a stepping stone to Eurasia, more teams so young guys can play more, more game experience for players, all are brilliant points, but seeing Jason Culina coming to Australia speaks for itself. The A-League could be a very good league.

Re:our A-League's going downhill Reply to this message
And why's that?

Because the big 4 are packed with players from Italy, Spain, France or South America.

Re:our A-League's going downhill Reply to this message
ps I think you will find that the EPL was ranked the best league in the world largely because of the Big 4.

It is worth pointing out that the style of football played by those teams (which are managed by foreigners) is different to the rest of the EPL, and is not indicative of the general standard.

The Big 4 play much more like teams from Italy, Spain, France or South America.

breathing.soccer,

Am glad to hear you prefer the football played in Spain to that in the EPL.

I would much rather watch 2 lowly ranked La Liga teams play, than say, Wigan v Bolton.

it was voted on by players and fans and for the quality of football

but i dont agree i personaly prefer the liga bbva(spain) and the football they play over there

and i think the pole wasnt fair cause how can some players vote when they havent played in the other top competitions

I see little or no cannibilising of fan bases with clubs in Nth Qld, Gold Coast, Canberra, Tasmania or West Sydney.

And more teams doesn't have to mean poorer quality football. One or two quality recruits can make a huge difference (like Fred at Melb Victory and the Brazilians at Adelaide). Clubs just have to be smart.

"the premier league is regarded as the best competition in the world".

By who? And on what basis?

Re:our A-League's going downhill Reply to this message
how would having more clubs mean less fans that makes no sense , you just need to put clubs in the right locations for example canbera they are our capital yet they have no one to support tasmania only have a cricket team but the they more than adiquette facilities to host a soccer team and a whole other source of players for each location , i believe there should be no more nsw or qld teams but i think one in canberra tasmania and posibly another one in victoria or s.a would fit nicely and open up more choice of young stars in the making wilse also bringing more sponsors to clubs and the a-league in general look at england for example they have about 70 professional clubs and the premier league is regarded as the best competition in the world ...atm we live in a world where bigger is considered better take an ipod for example my friend just bought an 80gig ipod and he will never fill it but it was more appealling to him because it was bigger and fancier .
so if we have more clubs and more people like Clive Palmer (Gold coast united) backin the a-league we can put australia on the map for soccer....

And as for 4 codes and not enough room fr soccer fans wise four NRL clubs are likely to go bankrupt in the next 5 years lol.

And i know alot of people who have converted from footy to soccer because its jump completey more entertaining

Re:our A-League's going downhill Reply to this message
More teams may mean more games, but it also means more games between WEAKER sides with LESS fans per team and LESS dollars for each club as the wealth needs to be spread more thinly.

We have a small population and 4 major codes of football. If 3 of those codes have 14 or more teams something will have to give!

If you must increase the number of players, just make a reserves comp where each club can field their seconds as a curtain raiser on game day.

Re:our A-League's going downhill Reply to this message
For thos of you who say that more clubs in the a-league will weaken teams stength because quality players will spread amongst more clubs .Think about it this way having more teams means more games which means more match experience and greater chance for improvement and also more teams means more chances for younger players to break into first team squads to develope thier skills at a higher level than just the youth league. And for people who are worried about top foriegn clubs poaching all our top players dont worry because when they buy our players we get the money so we can buy from other places in the world and poach all there top players :P and get more of a name with the players around the world and with players like aliosi and other socceroos comin back to play in the aleague means that other quality players are goin to take more notice of our comp and come over hear to play once we get more established

None of you have mentioned the transfer fees A league teams will get when their players are signed to overseas clubs. This can only make the game stronger here if the teams have more money coming in.

In the words of meatloaf niner, you took the words right outta my mouth.

Aleague is a feeder league for Aussies to be recognised globally. Also, i do not agree with the expansion, because all it encouraged was current players to move laterally within the league, with only $$$ on their minds. With the talent spread out further, sure, the a league might be closer, but when teams get to the ACL, they'l be weaker.

Re:our A-League's going downhill Reply to this message
Players leaving for richer and/or more prestigious leagues will always be a complicated issue.

Expansion seems a necessity for commercial growth (which will also help retain players), credibility in the region, and ACL places.

As for the A-League going downhill, I thought the full round just gone was one of the best in quality I have seen.

Re:our A-League's going downhill Reply to this message
I think the entire purpose for the A-League is to provide our players with opportunities to move to bigger and stronger leagues. This will make the national team better and provide our kids with an obvious path to the big time.

I do worry that they are thinking the game is bigger and stronger in this country than it actually is - too much expansion too early could spell trouble.

our A-League's going downhill Reply to this message
the worry was about our top players being poached to Europe but the Asian clubs particularly from Japan and Korea have come out of nowhere..

Jade North's gone and Adelaide are being targeted hard Costanzo, Ognenovski, Salley and Travis Dodd maybe gone by season's end...

the A-League just being a feeder league for the big Asian clubs is a worry... don't know how they can consider expansion at the moment..
