After the disappointment of another loss to Osaka, Adelaide, courtesy of a bullet from Cristiano, finished 5th in the world club championship (does any other football code do this?) by beating Al Ahly of Egypt to equal Sydneys 2005 5th placed finish against the same side. Adelaide had to get there a harder way though by beating 2007 Champions from countries such as Korea and Japan and a horrendous travel schedule from Uzbekistan and return which had them in the air for some 72 hours.
Thank goodness when they get back they have until Boxing day before they play again, but they do fly again, to Perth where they can have confidence of winning if they play well. |

| the reason the newcastle jets are not there is the fact that the afc runs on the prevese years finalist of the a leuge hence the reason adelaide and melbourne were there the afc takes the top 2 sides from there comp through to the wccc hence newcastle and the central coast will fight it out in the afc next year |

damn shame... Osaka gave Adelaide plenty of chances in the second half but they weren't good enough...
just a quick one as I can't be bothered looking it up... why is Adelaide United representing Oz in the Club Championship and not last season's A-League winners Newcastle Jets?? thanks..... |

I don't know yet IF Adelaide will get through to meet Man Utd in the semi finals of the World Club's as they are playing the game as we speak...
BUT isn't that nuts though? some boys from Adelaide get to play the European and English champions at full strength in an officially sanctioned match... wonderful stuff... |

Yep, the A-League are well run, perfectly set up and is a success. Those at the top have accute business skills and a love of the game - a perfect combo.
Yes, Tassie needs some representation, even if it is just for people like me who like to get behind their state and crave an outlet for that. (we don't do that great in the Inbred Olympics, places like Arkansas and Ipswich leave us for dead!)
The way the Tassie youth side performed in their 4 games this year against A-League youth sides (3 wins from 4) has almost assured them a permenant spot in the full competition. Canberra and Tas both played exhibition games this year and the FFA all but promised one of them a slot.
Adelaide Utd inthe A-League is representing Adelaide, and maybe Sth Aust. But you are right, when they are in the ACL or WCC they are representing everyone in Australia. |

nye . Tasmania needs representation in something other than cricket and the inbred Olympics. Hope you get an AFL team or a Football(Soccer team) team soon. When I watched the Adelaide-Gamba game I wasn't watching Adelaide play I was watching a representative side of Australia play.
I am in admiration of the success of the A-league in such a short space of time. The other codes could learn a thing or two if the could get their heads out of their as.sses for a few minutes. |

Bloody oath Sushi - I wish Adelaide all the best as they will be representing Australia this time.
I don't have a side yet either, waiting for Tasmania United (could be waiting a while!). But I don't care which Aussie team is there, the country should get behind them. |

agreed adrian. It is great to see the A-league doing so well and great to see we are represented at the World club challenge by Adelaide. If someone wants to have petty rants they should go to the AFL boards or the Cricket boards.
I'm not a fan of any A-League team in particular but wish Adelaide all the best to put up a good showing in the World Club challenge! |

| No A League team will be beating Adelaide for a little while muzzette. Adelaide are at the World Club Championship. Melbourne also had a chance to make this prestigious competition by winning the ACL but it lost in the group stages. |

Adelaide? i pitty you
Melbourne Victory are a lot better then adels.
out of all the a-league teams victory is the most talked about- victory is the most feared and victory is the most loved!
Melb Vic are incredible for every loss we have we win four games back adels just shows up on the day.
every team wins some and loses some (and sometimes draws) but victory are more then that they use it to an advantage if you always win there is nothing to work on! right now on the board all that seperates the 2 teams are a draw and a loss on friday victory will beat adels 6-0 and we will be number 1 again (lol i have a lot of respect for adels good on yaz) |

Adelaide United are off to Japan for the World Club Championship (does any other code do this?) sitting atop the A League ladder after thrashing form team Wellington Phoenix which was coming off wins against Melbourne and Sydney. Brazilians Cassio and Cristiano were on fire with 2 goals a piece with bookend goals from Sasa Ognenovski (3 goals in last three games) and captain, Travis Dodd.
Adelaide will face another New Zealand team Waitakere who are the New Zealand and Oceania Champions for a shot at Gamba Osaka. Hopefully Vidmar will keep faith with young Mullen at right back as he it the better option there rather than natural centre back Cornthwaite.
I am hoping Adelaide are refreshed enough to be a bigger obstacle to Osaka and have learnt well from the last 2 losses. Whilst still to be played, Waitakere should be a warm up game and Adelaide should be facing Osaka for a shot at Man U.
On another subject, good to see former Adelaide City boy Adrian Pellegrino score his first A League goal and thanks to Perth for "helping" Adelaide regain top spot. ;) |

I got the below from here- http://www.fifa.com/clubworldcup/qualifiers/index. html
In accordance with the regulations of the the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2008, it was agreed that if a Japanese team won the AFC Champions League, the host representative team would be replaced by the highest placed non-Japanese team from the 2008 edition of the AFC Champions League. Gamba Osaka's triumph in the AFC Champions League final has paved the way for runners-up, Adelaide United, to participate in December's tournament.
So even if 2 Jap sides played off in the ACL final someone else still would have went to the WCC, whether that was Adelaide or an Arab or Korean or Chinese club etc. |

| Iain Fyfe has signed for Adelaide as he has seen the signs at Sydney and they don't look good. His signing will spell the death knell for possibly Angelo Costanzo and Michael Valk.a.n.i.s , one of whom will sign for the new side. After a lull from travelling in excess of 100,000km this season so far Adelaide are back and will take a power of beating from here on in. I know Sydney are playing poorly ATM but Adelaide are refreshed and looking forward to the rest of the year. Going to the WCC will add extra pressure as games will have to be delayed but it wont be like trying to go to Uzbekistan which has to amongst the most difficult places to get to. Go you Reds! |

Disappointed Adelaide lost but not disappointed with the players efforts, they were just outclassed by a side technically better, faster in leg speed and passing/ball movement.
These games were good lessons for Adelaide and will give Vidmar plenty to work on for his players and his coaching. This is only his second season as a manager so he has done well in a short space of time. Hopefully they will be able use their experiences and apply themselves for the rest of the A League season. Gamba awaits at the world club championships because if all is in balance they should get over Waitakere from NZ to get a 1/4's spot.
Was a great ride that came to a thudding halt and I can only have praise for a club that does not have the resources of most of the clubs they faced. Hoping an ALeague GF win or runner up to do it all again! |

A lot of things came out of last's game for me!!
Firstly, Gamba are the worthy winners of the asian club championships...they are a quality side..deserved of that respect!!
Shiite..what an effort by adelaide..and don't worry they have created history...not only for there club but for football in this country..
I was impressed by adelaide last night...
I was impressed with some of the passages of play..I was impressed the way they never gave up..even though the mountain to climb became..well almost impossible after those two early goals by gamba...
But you know what..due to the pioneering efforts of adelaide we can now see peaks of this great mountain...and oh my friends it was so close..ever so...but we can now look forward and say it is possable..one day a club side from australia can be champions!! |
