Direct free kicks are given for offences against the player, or a handball.
Indirect are for offences not involving another player, e.g. offside, backpasses.
From what the ref saw in real time, he had no choice. Hindisght is a wonderful thing, but at least he had the conviction to make such a big call under such pressure.
Niner is right, Neill needed to stay upright. Players dive at all chances, as if it wasnt gonna happen in a WC s/f. |

I am not about to debate the decision being correct or not - it is over with and is now just another chapter in the history of the Socceroos.
All I am saying is that the referee shouldn't have been given the chance to make the mistake (if there was one), Lucas Neil is a much better defender than he showed in that passage of play - stay on your feet and penalty shot is not an option. |

| nye - very true (not really wanting to start that argument up again) but it was not a penalty it was a indirect free kick *ducks for cover* |

Or, maybe next time Lucas Neil will stay on his feet like any self respecting defender would have!
Easy to blame the ref, but Neil set the Italian up with the easy option of the dive - if Neil stays on his feet the dive can't happen and the game goes into extra time. |

| "take the 3 points no matter how we get it, the number of times australia has played really well against top notch teams and lost in the dying minutes re: italy." so true kingerik... 3 points is 3 points...they dont remember how ..they remember by how many!! to play that bad and still get the points was a bonus and was a big step forward to next world cup...and as for losing to the Nancy boys(italy)!! i guess the difference between Bahrain and italy is that Bahrain isnt filled witha pack of over payed and over rated Nancy boys that fall over at the first sign of a gust of wind, rolling around on the floor ,grabbing there ankles like they just been shot!!!But we all knew that they didnt want us there!! i mean, lets see, 4 referees where sent home from the world cup and what do you know..they all refereed the Aussie games!! One of them gave out 2 yellow cards to 1 player and he still allowed him to continue on!!Lets hope that in the next world cup,,they actually get referee's that are fair!! cause we all know "we didnt lose to the Italians,we lost to the referee"!!!! |

We have Japan away in February then we have 4 more games including 1 away game.
from what I have heard all we require is 2 more wins to qualify. hopefully we get a draw against Japan away and then we can do the job at home.
remember top 2 go through so we are in a good spot. Just hope the performance against bahrain is a reflection fo what is to come.
take the 3 points no matter how we get it, the number of times australia has played really well against top notch teams and lost in the dying minutes re: italy. but gotta hope they pull their heads out! |

Aussies were very poor, Bahrain were dominant - they had so many chances to score, but stuffed them all.
Oh well, 3 points and a damn good chance of going straight to S Africa - as long as we don't blow it! |

| Sheet, forgot about this last night! No i didn't, with a kid waking up regularly at 4 waking up at 1.30 is not an option to get up and watch anything! Anyway, good to see a 1-0 win however late Bresc scored the winner. Paper says Bahrain dominated, fat lot of good that did them! lol Preparation is still an issue and hopefully they can get together early for the games against Japan, AND everyone is fit. |

It is interesting that we all talk about this 'diving' stuff..and 'its almost unaustralian' if ya do take a dive..
But I was reading some comments after the washup of the adelaide and gamba osaka game...
Adelaide played the tough and rumble of the australian game... the australian way...but they were outplayed and outclassed by a better team...who played a strategic and skillful game...
The debate should not be about 'to dive or not to dive'..the debate should be about how can we improve the quality of football...Gamba Osaka have done us a favour..
The gap in quality between the national side and the a-league is growing..
I say throw out the rough and tumble...let's learn tactics and improve the quality of our local players.. |

| bowledover..I think there's been quite a reaction from local players and officials with regard to the 'diving' in the game...personally, I think video evidence would be a good thing to use if a player is seen to 'overreact' a situation on the field...and if found guilty..should be suspended.. |

| i would rather sbs show diving because thats all that happens on the pitch these days and if soccerwhos matches were on sbs how many would want to watch them play lowly ranked asian teams infront of tiny crowds |

| Iam a football fan in particular the soccer,I would like the aussies called this sport football, because according to my opiniun it's better then all other sports,so why Australians people should not given the fair go to this important game, which it's very important all over the world,so the Australians brodcast services shoul given the football soccer a big coverage in all television network and make more awareness to the young Australians generations how impotant and emotional is this sport all over the world. This game is the most beautiful and most skilled of all the games.Although SBS given us a very good coverage from the soccer on Sunday and show us the European Champion League thankes to them, we missed Australia league, and Australia international matches should be seen alive in all Australia. Thank you |

sushiboy- I know I don't make much sense..shiite I don't think I ever do!! I guess the point I was trying to make was the Rugbue and the AFL seasons are over..The victory are pulling crowds around the 20,000 mark...so what is going to be the next excuse that the various media outlets roll out..for there lack of coverage in the local game..
And I'm not falling for that shiite that the a-league is an inferior product..which is a point that is getting laboured and thrown about...
I personally believe that there are three or four teams in the current competition that are playing good bloody football..what are the 'proffesional football critics' going to come up with next if Adelaide get through to the final of the asian club championships (which i believe they will) and then invited to the world club championships..a prestigious world football tournament..proving that they have gotten thus far by no fluke!!
Alan thank you.. |

sushiboy - I'll leap to crabmans defence here, both AFL and NRL are on holidays at the moment so are pulling NO crowds at all!
I understand in season they do this, but right now what other sports in Aus are getting these numbers, so why is there not a bit more focus on soccer?
down here in Melb you are more likely to hear about where the Hawks are on there end of season trip, than in depth coverage of the A-League! |

Thats not set in stone... there's talk for all major sporting events to be held on FTA.. but pay-tv is gonna argue it in court.
Pay tv will lose millions in subscriptions, revenue and exposure if every major event is thrown to FTA, so naturally, they dont want it to happen,
personally, itd be great. pay tv would be so cheap. |

Socceroos World Cup qualifying matches will return to free-to-air television in 2013 when the current broadcast contract ends, federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy says.
Senator Conroy said the government would place Socceroos' matches on the anti-siphoning list - which ensures major sporting events appear on free-to-air television - when the Foxtel contract with the Football Federation of Australia ends in 2013.
Senator Conroy said while Foxtel had done an excellent job in broadcasting football - including the A-League - the Socceroos should be treated like other major national teams.
"We believe that the Socceroos are a national icon in the same way as the Wallabies, the Test cricket, the Kangaroos and a whole range of other sports," Senator Conroy said.
"We have said that we'll be putting the ... Socceroos World Cup qualifying matches back on the anti-siphoning list.
"There's an existing contract at the moment that there will some significant financial penalty for the football federation if we intervene.
"But we have an absolutely clear cut commitment before the election to restore the Socceroos."
The World Cup qualifier between the Socceroos and Qatar, which Australia won 4-0, was shown only on Foxtel on Wednesday night. |
