Well let me answer Zedds first. Will I drop the Tahs? If Ella's 'VicSuper 15' crew end up running the new side, absolutely. He will attract the right players and sponsors to ensure the new team has the optimum chance of building a sustainable rugby culture in Victoria. Interestingly for Panther the main coin behind their push is a Southern Districts man, so I expect you most of all to join me in the new Vic push.
The ARU have been at their calculating best in asking the 3 groups to join forces for this bid. The VRU involvement will ensure the grass roots will be taken care of and the other two deliver the finance, skil, experience and expertise to ensure the side is a success.

As for names, I think Ado's Melbourne Tornado's has a nice ring to it. Whaddya reckon guys?

I'm 100% with other posters, Melbourne is the right choice for another S15 franchise. Promoting it in the land where they get a point for missing will be tough, but it is do-able.

The experince of the Swans in Sydney shows they have to be winners to get traction, the Swans really got nowhere untill they were in the top echelon. That's not to say they have to be S15 champions, but they have to be in the mix. They also need to promote some personalities that the Melbourne public can identify with and embrace as their own, as the Swans did with Tony Lockett and Paul Kelly.

I actually agree with Pappy that much more needs to be done to promote the game in western Sydney, but a S15 franchise is not it.

I also think Melbourne is the right choice.
There has been some bleating from Papworth about the Western Sydney bid but in the long run to establish Union in Victoria would be huge.
Also agree with gevan about media bias in Vic.
All they talk about is AFL,maybe a bit of cricket.
They don't even show internationals live.
U are right the Victorian Media need to be on side !

I am fully supportive of a Super 15 franchise being based in Melbourne. I live in Brisbane now, but Sydney born and raised, and lived in Melbourne for six (wonderful) years. I have no dislike for ANY of the aussie franchises, and will get behind all of them when playing kiwi or saffa franchises. When it comes to local derbies....my loyalties are the tahs, but i will certainy adopt the melbourne franchise as my second team. I guess I just love rugby, and the truly international sport it is, without the fanaticism of soccer, but still the passion.

And if it comes to fruition, then Melbourne may truly claim the mantle of the 'sporting capital' of Australia. Maybe, just maybe, the local press will recognise the fact that other codes of football exist, as that is what I believe has been the stumbling block in the past.

SANZAR in October, I believe Mr. Cheeky!! LOL. Actually, I will soon be leaving this polluted, steaming, overrated pithole of a country back to OZ and my employers are based in Melbourne. Double Woohoo and yippee from me, Ado. You may be a co#kroach based in Melbourne, I will be a canetoad with a Melbourne home. Thank rugby heaven that our sport is international!! (unless you live in this smoggy, smelly, exaggerated piece of terra firma - but the chicks are hot!!!!).

Who actually makes the final decision on the 15th team? The ARU or SANZAR?

Good luck Ado, am still 100% sure "The Naki" will pip you at the post............NOT!

It really is a laugh that there are other bids from SA and NZ to have a team based in the Australian union.

Well I can see Barnes heading to Melbourne with a big fat paycheque like Gits did in the Force.

What is going to happen to the Tahs biggest supporter Ado, are you going to just brush them aside like has beens?

What are they going to call the team? Storm been taken but "Poachers" is still available. Just kidding, there is no way they will steel any players from the other franchises.......tongue in cheek....

Good luck to you it will add another dimension to Super Rugby.

Melbourne for S15. Reply to this message
Well, we're going to have a new team down here. Woohoo! The ARU wants the three Melbourne bids to jump into bed together and form one consolidated bid. The problem here is the bid with the money has a board of Vic Rugby board renegades and the one with the grass roots support is the Victorian Rugby Union. Then there is a third bid from the Melbourne Victory (soccer) -where they fit in, I'm not sure.

Hope the ARU know what they're doing, because I can't see the different biddes all hopping merrily into bed to form one new entity.
