Fair enough Froggy, Australia has a great history in the sport and in the Modern Era have typically been great opponents. The one thing I would be concerned about is them turning into a team that only plays at World Cups. It may sound rich coming from a kiwi however I would rather have the ABs win 90% of their games and lose the World Cup then spend 3 years watching your team play like cr@p for a moment of glory. It has traditionally been one hell of a moment of pain when we have been knocked out but we are the only team outside the Champs in the last few years that has something to fall back on.

And we held the Bledisloe, Tri-nations, World Cup, Mandella Trophy and Cook Cup when Eddie Jones was appointed coach. By the time he left to destroy Queensland Rugby we had lost them all!!

And occasionally he still goes to the press to lecture us on what's wrong with Australian Rugby.

Sorry, off the track, but it comes to mind every time someone starts talking about trophies.

I remain baffled as to what trophies you hold - Bledisloe Cup I suppose against a rubbish Wallaby team?

We hold the Calcutta Cup - equally as uninspiring

Kip,

I've never met you, but I reckon you would resemble Lieutenant George from Blackadder Goes Forth - smiling in the face of adversity, against all the odds and "as thick as a whale omelette" as he described himself.

Realistic targets - Tally-ho!

I suggest we all stop being doubters and take inspiration from the English. Its great to be ambitious..
Im now striving to reach a few goals of my own...
Conservatively Im looking to Marry both Jessica Alba and Megan Fox, Earn my first Billion, and sporting wise I just wanna have the strength of Jonah Lomu, the boot of steyne, and run as fast as bolt... and screw the 8 year plan the girls will be getting a little old, I'll do it in 4...

I love this vision for English Rugby. However I suspect the vision will look decidedly different once they pull their heads out of their ar/se?

Keep telling yourself that Kip! The All Blacks will kill your current team! Johnny Wilk is neutralised by Carter and M. Steyn, even more so if both Steyn's are playing! Why do you say the boks are about to implode? I disagree with you on that and everything else you wrote. England does not have the players to beat the Southern hemisphere. The same Bok team beat you at twickers last year by about 40 points! We got players on the bench in SA, AUS amd NZ that would walk into the English team.

I disagree with you Geraint

We finished above Wales last year with basically a scratch team and second in the 6 nations,

Ireland Wales and France are on the decline

Australia are poor when it comes to real rugby and the ABs definitely mortal. The Boks are ready to implode.

These are realistic targets

Re:England's 8 year strategic plan Reply to this message
bish, that position of head coach - England should be met with the same enthusiasm as applications for head negotiator - China for Rio Tinto!!

Surely this is a wish list, not a list of goals? Why not just say, we're going to win everything, and the Soccer World Cup while we're at it, it makes as much sense.

Mex, I recall goals as having to be SMART, being:
Specific
Measurable
Agreed
Realistic
Time bound

These hit three, are a mile from one and if they are agreed, Johnston's a clown.

Geraint,

If that is true, it is unbelievable. In any business you are taught to set goals.
They should be two things
1. Measurable
2. Attainable.

The RFU have one out of two things right - they are measurable but they sure aren't attainable. That is setting goals to fail. Who taught those clowns how to set goals.....

Blessings

England's 8 year strategic plan Reply to this message
"The Rugby Football Union has cranked up the pressure on Martin Johnson by setting him an eight-year goal of winning two World Cups and four Six Nations championships, two of which should be of the grand slam variety. On top of that Martin Johnson is being asked to win two out of every three games played against the major southern hemisphere powers and to increase the national team's win ratio to 70-80 per cent [from 45%]" - article in the Telegraph today

Surely this should be amended to be the '7 year strategic plan, deferred by a year'... because I can't see them winning anything in the next 12 months, even with golden boy back in the frame.

I love it when the RFU come out with this stuff. they set the same strategic plan after they won the RWC and haven't won a competition since. What exactly is the point, and why give Martin Johnson such unrealistic goals and add to the pressure?
