Perhaps Ozzyone should read Jasmine's excellent commentary to 'get another perspective', seeing as he reckons Im clueless. I think she summarised PdV's predicament very well.
For those of you who think 'Im being racist, or making this a political argument, the following is an exceprt from SA news from Sunday 6 Sept:-
"Asad Bhorat, secretary of the Transformation and Anti-Racism Rugby Committee (TARC), a national coalition of black rugby clubs, has called De Villiers the "ultimate traitor"." This is not because of Saturday's loss to Australia, but because as a black coach, he has not played enough black players. If his committee was just for Transformation, it would more likely be about rugby. But beig'anti-racist' makes it precisely the opposite. And yes, the guy's name really is Borat! Stranger than fiction.
Those of us who love rugby and hate politics in sport are deeply disappointed by this type of rubbish because it's no longer about merit or ability. It's about the colour of your skin.
Those of you who think that racism can only go white-to-black have been sucked in by these self-serving politicians and politically correct punters who will destroy the game for SA and therefore the rest of the rugby world. |

The villageidiot was definetly appointed because of his colour and not because he was a good coach.
And that there is the injustice......to him
The village idiot would have far preferred to have been appointed fo his ability but he himself knows that is not so......
hence all his stupid comments with sayings that he gets totally mixed up...he is so desperate to prove he can do it.....that every word out of his mouth is a faux pas. |

6th loss but still very impressive.
You shouldn't blame the English, its part of their psychy that they just need to win something once and then live in its glory for decades after. Even if their the only ones that think theres still glory left in a historic event like that. |

Regardless of whether he is a political appointment or not, he does make plenty of remarks which reflect a "foot in the mouth." He not only makes the dumb remarks, he comes across as extremely arrogant. Of course, making dumb remarks does not make him a bad coach. He must be doing something right because no team has real success with a poor coach.

Here's his coaching history.
He coached amateur club Tygerberg in 1996 and 1997, and the Western Province Disas in 1997. In 1998, he enjoyed his first major appointments as assistant coach for Western Province in the Currie Cup and also the South Africa national under-19 side, which he took to third in the 1999 Under 19 Rugby World Championship. He took the Falcons through the 2002 and 2003 Currie Cup campaigns before going on to coach the South Africa national under-21 rugby union team between 2004 and 2006. In the 2004 Under 21 Rugby World Championship, South Africa finished third, but won in 2005 and came second in 2006. In 2007, De Villiers was appointed coach of the Emerging Springboks and led them to the title of the 2007 Nations Cup |

I agree with Mark as well. But Gale's point is valid too and I can't help but feel that his appointment was tokenistic.
Have to say though, I thought for the first time last night he actually spoke like a leader. It's been a long time coming and I hope he learns from his own errors as well. |

ML,
I understand what you are saying and always find your comments insightful.
I knew this would be a response from someone an that's disappointing. You have responded as I suspected a few may, but I believe you missed the point by being politically correct - and the game doesn't need that.
He has no form at any significant level as a coach and was clearly appointed because of the fact he is black. There are a plethora of people who would have been ahead of him. Don't get me wrong, in a country with 50m+ blacks and <5m whites, the game MUST transition to black dominance but positively, not politically.
Having myself suffered racist abuse growing up, I know what it's like.
But just because the black people were abused under apartheid doesn't make it right to repay the favour, does it?
Cheers, and please, there is no racism in my position at all - just trying to be objective. |

gale: >Most of my Jaapie mates insist he's just there because he's black - which is a pity. They too say Dick, Smit & Matfield are coaching the team.
Not very keen on this line of argument:
1. How many of your mates are members of the SARFU Board that selected PdV?
2. How many are present at Springbok practices to see how the coaching is conducted?
3. Is it really impossible to believe that a Black man might be able to coach the Springboks? Must one invoke White men as the source of the Boks' success?
3. Politics, including racial politics, cuts both ways, right? How many non-White coaches were ever considered for appointment? Indeed, how many non-White coaches were ever given the opportunity to work up through the competitive levels of SA rugby to be in a position to be considered?
Don't like the cut of his jib? Okay. Think he speaks poorly and thoughtlessly? You have evidence.
But making it all a racial issue is a very dangerous path - most particularly for SA rugby. Whatever people might remember or imagine of the past, it is the present that most influences the future. And if we wish to invoke the past, we must invoke all of it, not just the bits that fit our favorite stories. SA has changed, fundamentally, and rugby in SA has to man-up and live in the real world. It seems to me that their record on the field the last number of years shows that they are coping very well indeed.

Well I'm happy to hear that for the sake of the Bok players and their supporters.
Most of my Jaapie mates insist he's just there because he's black - which is a pity. They too say Dick, Smit & Matfield are coaching the team. That's not good. The political issues there make it a real challenge for them. |

de Villiers gave a really decent interview actually, congratulating the "brilliant"Wallabies...i' m a bit disappointed here...i really expected a show....but the guy behaved, was actually gracious in defeat.
but Gale...i don't know if i wo0uld go as far as calling him the Springbok coach...i have a feeling that D.i.c.k Muir and the senior guys in the team actually do the coaching and call all the shots....de Villiers is just a facade...a really embarrassing one most of the times unfortunately for the SA rugby. |

That's not the point Z.
If Boks win it this year, they thoroughly deserve it. It's about the embarrassment they have for a coach.
He whined to IRB about our scrim last week, and bar first 20 min of second half, Wallabies dismantled their front three comprehensively.
It's one thing winning. It's quite another carrying on like he does. No doubt he'll lodge a protest. |
