| Hey guys its been a while! Just returned from honeymoon as well as a family wedding in RSA! My twin cousins play for the sharks and are injured at the moment. My uncle says they have been offered contracts by the Rebels! So this would suggest that the rebels are looking every where!!! Sadly they declined the contracts:( |

Yep I reckon you are Panther. He was Top 14's top pointscorer last season and is playing brill at the moment. That said there are so many 10 options for Melbourne to choose from its a bit crazy.
Brock james aside, you've got Gower and Daruda who has just quit in France, Sammy 2 dads, Lachlan McKay, Gerrard (not really a 10, but can play it) then there guys who are 10's but wont be first pick at their province like Beale, Halangahu, Lucas, Leileafano, Toomua etc. All good young talent. And that's before you even consider the foreigners available.
10 will not to hard to fill. Other spots might, but 10 wont. Enjoy your hangover tomoz Panther. I'm having mine on Sat! Cheers. |

Brock James: Great talent. Injury prone though.
Any Aussie who can go to NZ and dominate in Provincial is a decent player. Would love to see him get a gig @ Rebels |

Borthwick is not the answer imo.
He is not going to relinquish his English career to play for Melbourne and why would they want the new English captain.Strange !
That's unusual but i guess they are just sounding out who's avaliable !
Exciting really |

I heard so too Panther. They assistant coach along with the GM football (ex Force CEO) jumped on a plane on the weekend bound for europe.
Their mission is to grab the best Ozzies they can find and talk to the eurpean player agents to guage interest.
Guys like Borthwick would be around the 650K mark apparently, so we won't be getting too many of them. Also he would have to relinquish his England spot to do so, so I doubt he would really want to come.
MCqueen and the boys here have been in the press saying their after Aussies first then foreigners.
There's a few good ones floating around looking to come hom too. I see ex force fly half Scott Daruda handed in his resignation this week. I've also heard Ivan Henjaks name mentioned along with Brock James. Another ex Force fly half who is braining them.
I've been watching a bit of France Top 10 comp on Fox lately and there is a bucket load of Aussies, Ki's and PI players running around. They wont have to look too far to fill the ranks me thinks. |

Well Froggy they've actually got dispensation to get up to 10 foreigners if they want. This number will decrease over 5 years to bring them back in line with other Oz sides. That said McQueen has already stated he doesn't want to use all 10 available, preferring to top up the side with foreign talent rather than make it the backbone of the side.
He's also made it very clear that he wants the side built around Oz talent. It has been reported that he has a list of 250 players to look though. These are guys currently in S14 who's contracts come up next year, academy players, schoolboys, Oz players OS and guys in grade who are capable of taking the step up
He seems to want balance in the side so I think we'll see a few marquee Wallas, a few current regular S14 players, a few Oz players from OS, some guys who are good enough but can't get a starting spot at their current S14 club, some current academy players and three or four imports.
Doesn't leave a whole lot of room for league players. And McQueen is adamant about players coming to Melbourne for the right reason and it wont be money. I can't see more than one or two league guys putting their hands up and even then it will be guys with a union pedigree like Craig Wing, Cooper Cronk et al. There wont be any Thurstons |

McQueen a real coup, this guy is the greatest coach Aus has produced in my 50 odd years. Still, he still has ti have the cattle!
A good place to start recruiting would be overseas, of course. And I don't mean foreign players, I'm talking the likes of McMeniman, Norton-Knight, Gerard, Latham, Hewitt, Beau Robinson, Vickerman, the list just goes on and on.
Then just add a couple of current Wallabies, a foreign import, and a few good youngsters on the S14 fringes, and you'll soon put together a good side for Rod the God to work with.

Huge signing for the Rebels. Any young/old player would give anything to be coached/mentored by Rod MacQueen.
This is the best signing possible, forget league players and marquee players, MacQueen is the best thing that could happen to any S15 team in Oz. He has the ability to make a few calls and and entice players we wouldn't even think of.
The man has credibility which will go along way in putting a team on the field in Melbourne.
Well done. |

Rod Macqueen named coach of Melbourne Rebels Super 15 franchise
Former Australia coach Rod Macqueen has been lured out of retirement to lead new Super 15 rugby union team Melbourne Rebels.
Macqueen has agreed a three-year deal to be head coach and director of coaching at the Rebels, who will join the competition in 2011.
His assistant will be current Sydney University coach Damian Hill.
Macqueen has not been involved with fulltime coaching since stepping away from the Wallabies in 2001 - a decorated spell during which he steered Australia to victory at the 1999 World Cup.
He said doing some initial consultancy work with those involved in the Rebels' Super 15 bid re-ignited his passion to coach, saying it was a great opportunity.
âIt made me think I'd like to have a bigger involvement, because there's something special that can happen in this area (Melbourne),â Macqueen said on Wednesday.
âWe want to take the team to the community, we want to embrace the community, and we want the team to put back into the community.â
Macqueen's appointment follows the Rebels' signing of Melbourne Storm NRL boss Brian Waldron as chief executive earlier this week. |

They've just pinched Brian Waldrom the CEO of the Storm to run the new side. This is a pretty major coup. He's put the foundations in place for the success of the storm four the past few years. The guy was also CEO of St Kilda in the AFL for a while, so he has serious creds in building successful footy culture.
Also looks like McQueen the World Cup winning wallas coach will take a director of coaching role.
Certainly looks like the top end of the organization will be very strong. Now for the players. I believe Kangaroos half Jonathan Thurston has been sounded out amongst others. Personally, if they're chasing league signatures I'd love nothing more than for the new CEO to bring over a few of his former Storm charges. Inglis, Cronk and Slater would be nice thanks. |

Given the underwhelming sucess of Oz at producing herds of Elite forwards, perhaps there are some big, strong lads in ARG, or even, NH who would like to try a few seasons in Melbourne. If they can put up with the cultural biases and language snobbishness of the Froggies, Victoria should be a fair gamble.

The ARU have relaxed the import rule for Melbourne. Up to 10 foreigners will be allowed to play for the side. With the number rolled back over 5 years to be parity with other Oz teams.
Looks like there'll be even more K1's headed to Oz! |

Right now the ARU own the license for the side. They are going to award the license to the most appropriate company/structure to create and run the new side.
Originally there were three bidders for the license. The Melbourne Victory (soccer) bid pulled out, the VRU (Vic Rugby Union) were sidelined by the ARU and now there is one bidder for the license. That one bidder is a private equity concern comprised of both big and small businessmen.
The only sticking point at the moment is over broadcast revenue. All Oz sides get 4 mill from head office for TV rights and the ARU are offering the new Melbourne side 3 mill. A couple of directors are digging their heels in over this, but I suspect its all posturing. Don't believe anything you read about certain directors walking away from the table either. They've all come way to far to let this fall over at the final gate. Like I said, it's all posturing with the objective of getting a little more coin.
Personally I think the ARU should loosen the purse strings because they are getting extra bonus TV rights coin from News Limited because of Melbourne being included in the S15 comp and it opens up the market for News in a big way.
I wouldn't read to much into anything you've read. The events in press reports over the last few days actually occurred weeks ago and I think the reason it is getting headlines is because there is little else to talk about.
To answer you question Froggy, it is my understanding that the ARU expressions of interest submitted by the bidders gave no specific commitment in terms of revenue from the ARU.

I have to say, I'm surprised that these issues (how much funding the ARU was going to put up) weren't discussed before the bid was submitted. I really don't understand the process, but from the outside it looks very amateurish.
I particularly can't follow a) why these sponsors backed this bid without, apparently, any idea what was involved and b) how the ARU would go into this bid with hese sponsors supposedely 'on board' but with absolutely nothing binding them to the arrangement.
As a person who runs his own business, it all seems amazing.
Still, the reporting seems very dodgy, one minute Mitchell and Maloney are out, next minute they're close to agreement. I gues it's just 'watch this space'.

Thanks for clarifying Ado. That makes more sense.
Yeah, have noticed them referringto name as "working" for a few weeks now.
Coaching possibilities sound exciting. I just want the side to be a success and to become a haven for new blood.
Over here, I'm very pleased to see Zack Homes has got a gig in the 7s squad and Force academy. My son played against him at school - he is an awesome young talent. Great to see WA homegrowns starting to filter thru. |

It's a private equity issue as opposed to other states getting greedy issue.
From what I can gather the ARU are being a little tight fisted over broadcast revenue sharing because the new side will be privately owned.
Anyway I hear the ARU are doing a counter offer and want the license awarded asap. So they need resolution in very soon.
On the upside there is very strong chatter from various sources about Michael Cheika, the former Randwick stalwart who took Leainster to the Heineken Cup title this year, coming as coach.
I've also heard Glen Ella has put his hand up for a backs/ skills role. And given that Mark Ella is the VicSuper15 bid chairman - boy it looks like its going to be a running rugby side alright.
Interesting also, the name may not be the Rebels after all. They are now refering to it as a "working title" As much as the locals like it, the ARU want nothing to do with anything that reminds anyone of the ill fated ARC - which of course was where the first Melbourne Rebels made its name. |

Surely that's not the whole story Ado?
Where is the $4m from? Is it proceeds of S14 TV rifts or something? If so, that may explain. Just downtown sound right in isolation.
As a Force supporter, I recall how other franchises (and their fans) got nasty, complained and made it as hard as possible. I hope it will be much more positive this time around. This should be great for Aussie rugby. |
