The Boks looked way too strong kip. They fell off in the last 20 mins due to not having played for so long, and made a few changes which lost them a lot of cohesion, but really looked a much better side.
I will say this, the beast was continually driving in on the angle in the scrums and it wasn't picked up by the ref, which really cost the Lions early on.
It is all uphill for the Lions from here......literally!!! :-) |

Dear Geraint
Why not use your brain before writing rubbish
The drop goal is fine and the ones you mentioned are fine.
My point is that if the drop goal becomes a dominant part of tactics and game plan used throughout the 80 minutes then it is a sad development
eg 3 drop goals from say 8 attempts

| It's laughable to hear Kip bemoan drop goals. Your precious Wilkinson won the world cup thanks to a drop goal, a match you never deserved to win. And you came second in the last six nations thanks to a drop goal by Ronan O'Gara against Wales in the dying seconds, and having been handsomely beaten by both Ireland and Wales you never deserved second place. If I were you i'd keep my mouth shut. |

drop goals are part of the rule...
Andre the bear kicked his way through the 91 WC?
Larkhams DG against SA in WC to get them through
Wilkinsons DG throughout the 2003 WC tournament
The reason the value of the try went from 4 to 5 points is to gve you reason to score tries but that the SA and the UK play. Far as i'm concerned it's part of the rules do whatever you can to win a game. |

Well yes there were many late tackles and dodgy tactics by the SA side - however - we expect to be softened up before the tests. They were pumped up. The ref needs to protect sides else we return to the bad old days.
There is a history here after all.
I still think that the Boks will be defeated on saturday

| Hope there's not too many from last nights game Kip. It was woeful. And the Southern Kings reminded me of playing sub district footy many years ago. All the enthusiasm in the world but sadly lacking in skill or ideas. |

Heita Kip and all and all,
I did not make the rules and those that did, must have had a reason for doing it. The rule exists, as do the ELV's. The team that does not use these to their advantage should have their head read.
The Bulls used both boot and ELV's brillianly to set up their S14 win. The rules have changed many times and will probably do so again. What is stopping the opposing team from hoofing a few over? Pride? Lack of ability? They do not agree with the rule?
The British and Irish Lions have had it easy so far. I am not happy with the SA showing til now and have been impressed with the Lions talent and skill, but the cracks are showing.
Underestimate the Bokke by all means.
Win or lose, by try or boot, yours will be up against the best of ours. Good luck!!
Amabokke Bokke Bokke!!!

Gets back to the old argument of dropping the value of the drop goal back to one point.
Lions aren't setting the world on fire, but they are working their way into the tour and they are winning. Cant do too much more than that. |

Western Province 23 British & Irish Lions 26
It'll do - hardly the test side!
3 tries to 1
I think If the Bok mentality is drop goals as part of the game plan - or the game plan - the Lions will win the series.
Also a sad mentality for rugby
GO LIONS

The only problem the Boks have is there coach and as he is not playing they should go alright. But then again everybody said they would win the Trinations last year and look at what happened.
The first match will be close, the Boks have not had much in the way of prep and some of the players haven't had a decent game since the end of S14 round robin. This will work against them initialy unless they get away on a flyer.
I still think the Boks will win. |

You right about the match ups. Mouthwatering. I must say last nights effort has softened my view that the first test would be a jarpie whitewash. Not so sure on your front row call Gale. I reckon that's exactly where the Lion will have the upperhand. Smith isn't a specialist prop and up against top line front rowers I reckon he might come undone. I also think the Lions will target JP at the back and pepper there back three with high balls.
Other than that, I dont see too many weaknesses in this SA outfit. And now the Lions are coming into form, we actually might be in for a good contest. |

I worry when w're in agreement Kip (no offence intended), but I think most on these boards are severely underestimating Lions squad and overestimating Boks.
I think it will be much closer than expected. Looking toward to following match ups:
Backrows. We all know how good Boks 3 are, but Lions loosies are right up there and full of mongrel. Should be epic at the breakdown.
Matfield/Botha v O'Connell/Jones. More epic stuff
Du Preez v Phillips. Both run like flankers, are solid defenders and good passers
OGara v Steyn/Pienaar. Everyone seems to be underrating ROG. He's a class fly.
Centres. Should be awesome contest. OD & Roberts impressive.
Fullback. Byrne v whoever. He is top shelf
Habana v Williams. Mouthwatering.
Only area I'm concerned Lions are potentially at risk is front 3. Smit, du Plessis and Beast are no 1 combo |

Well done to your boys. Good, hard game. Do not believe full Sharks team would have stood up to that onslaught.
Any team can be beat. Lions come uppence in the first test f'sure.
