Agree, can't get too carried away with that.
I thought Collins and Whittaker were best of Baa Baas. SBW was ok at times, a bit at sea defensively, but I'd give him a pass mark. Macca was average at 10.
Brown best for Wallas. Smith and Horwill also good. Polota Nau and P0c0k good subs.
Entire Aus backline - including both halves - was impressive. My least favorite player - Adam 2Dads - had a faultless, impressive game. |

Pretty untidy, Baabaas disappointing, so you can't really take too much from it. Still, you can only beat what's in front of you, and the Wallabies certainly did that.
Love seeing two wingers with genuine pace as Mitchell & Turner, I hope Deans sticks with them. Thought Adam A/C had one of his best at FB, in the forwards I thought Horwill & Moore were outstanding. Plenty to work on, but good first hit-out.

Collins was probably the hardest working fwd on the field. He would slot in nicely for Kaino.
Great for oz combo's but not really much opposition especially the tight five. |

Kinda disheartening knowing that it has taken a former League star in SBW, and a current League legend in Wendell Sailor to promote the game.
Im not baiting, IM being serious. Love union, im good mates with a waratah, but seriously, surely there is more to offer from this game than SBW and Dell. I mean, Dell, come on. |

Lyons called into cover for Elsom, who has some niggling injury.I hope he plays though,it's been a while since i've seen him.
I'm really looking forward to this game.
Even though SBW is being hyped up he certainly has got the interest going, even with the league boys.Although they'd be wanting him to fail.
Here in Oz it's sometimes hard for RU to get media exposure and SBW has definatly got RU on the front page,so good news there.
GO WALLABIES |

Gale,
I'm not knocking the quality of the back row, they are all outstanding players who've deserved their turn, I just like to see at least one big guy at either 6 or 8. If Palu was 8 I would be happy with Hodgson at 6, but with the much smaller Brown, I would have selected Mumm. Remember the Baa Baa's back row includes Elsom & Collins! Now that's power.

The only worry with the backrow is their size.Height i mean.We might struggle a little bit in the line-out.They should be sweet around the field.Very mobile.
Also will this be played under the ELV's or as I noticed the lions games are being played with the new variations. The one with rolling mauls etc.
Anyone know ? |

I think the back row will acquit itself nicely - great test against the Barbarians loosies.

I agree, it's only a Barbarians match, but a few selections surprised me.
I've said it before, but I think the back row's too small, would have liked to see Mumm at 6, also surprised to see Lote not in the squad, although I think Turner's a great selection.
Was very surprised to see Q Cooper on the bench, don't know what he caught Deans doing!

Yeah Horwill has been quiet this season and probably getting over that foot injury has hampered him a bit.
It's quite a tough schedual comming up isn't it so Deans will probably rotate a few players.
I'm more than comfortable with Robbies abilities.
Makes the Eddie Jones era seem a life time away ! |

| Sprou, I'm only guessing, but I dont know how keen Deans is on Horwill at the mo. He hasn't played much for the Reds and the little he did play wasnt up to his usual standard, thats why I reckon Mumm will probably start. He ges so much done around the park than either NS or JH. That said, if Horwell steps up, then more than happy to see him stay. In form he's a great 5. |

Ado,agree with all that but where would Mumm start next week ?
Elsom will be the 6 for sure and Mumms only other position would be 2nd row and i'd doubt he'd knock out Sharpe and/or Horwill.
I like the balance of the side.Solid forward pack and versatile back-line.
I'm really looking forward to this game.Should be a cracker !! |

| Hmmm. Ado, I hope you're right. But not having Tuqiri in the reserves made me think otherwise. I can see Rocky and Mummy in the French Test, but with 2 Italy tests beforehand, I think Dingo will do a little experimenting. I think AAC and JO'C will do some interchanging. |

under, Its a baa Ba's game not a test. I would expect Lote to pop straight back into his usual spot next week. When they had the same ixture in Europe last year, deans hardly picked one test player in his starting line up.
My guess is he wants close to a test starting line up to get some team time together. I think next week though you'll find there's a probably three or four from this side who wont start in the first test.
Elsom, Tuquiri, Mumm will all start the first test. And look for O'Connor as a run on at FB. |

Well, I was a bit surprised by the non selection of Tuqiri. Maybe he had a quiet Super 14, but I didn't think it was enough for him to be replaced. Still, it should motivate him to think about regaining his spot. There are some good wingers around at the moment.
No other real surprises. Looks a strong team on paper. |

Froggy,
<<coming from the worst performing front row of the 3 Aus franchises>> What's this rubbish about Cowan and Force front row? You've been watching rugby league or something mate.
Whilst there's no doubt Tahs front 3 are best in Aus, Force arrangement of Castle, McIsaac & Cowan was very impressive this year, after a dodgy first few matches. They had no problems with the SA packs, nor the Kiwis and held up very well against the Tahs.
Not saying Cowan is quite in Robinson's league, but deserves his place as a solid scrummager and an excellent running and offloading forward. |

It's not a calculated risk using Alexander and Cowan as back-up tightheads, it's madness," said Young, who telephoned Williams -- one of the three selectors -- for a please-explain after the Brumbies' two tighthead specialists Guy Shepherdson and Salesi Ma'afu were passed over for the June Tests, along with Kepu.
"They believe Alexander can play tighthead but I have never seen him play there. In fact, I've yet to see him even perform to his potential at loosehead. If they want to turn him into a tighthead, they've got to send him back to play there in club football.
The Wallabies spokesman said Deans had never used a full-time scrum coach at the Crusaders, though he used Dave Hewitt on occasions to work on the set piece.
"But when he had front-rowers like Greg Somerville and Corey Flynn who knew their trade, he was happy to let them take charge of the scrum themselves," the spokesman said.
"Everyone should at least give this a chance and see how it goes before criticising the idea."
In any other country, the lack of a scrum coach would not be a major concern. But the Wallabies' 2007 World Cup campaign was cut short in the quarter-final by England because of deficiencies up front, the result of neglect under former coach Eddie Jones. |

and another interesting thing i just read...i really hope we're not going back to the "glorious"days of Eddie Jones, when our scrum was a total joke...i would really hate to hear again the Teletubies jokes and see all the poms gloating when they smash us up front.
Article from: The Australian
THE Wallabies will have to largely coach themselves in the scrum this season even if their designated scrum coach, World Cup-winning prop Trevor Woodman turns down an offer to return to England as Wasps forwards coach.
A Wallabies spokesman yesterday confirmed the senior players in the front row and specifically Al Baxter, the most capped Australian prop, have been given the opportunity to "have an input" -- meaning they will conduct their own scrummaging sessions in training. Forwards coach Jim Williams, a former Test backrower with no scrummaging expertise, will act as "facilitator". Hooker Steve Moore and prop Matt Dunning -- assuming he makes his way back into the Wallabies after snapping his Achilles tendon on last year's spring tour -- also will be expected to take leadership roles in org *** ing the scrum.
Woodman confirmed yesterday he was considering an approach from Wasps to coach their forwards under New Zealand head coach Tony Hanks. Indeed, UK press reports indicate he already has accepted the job.
Brumbies scrum coach Bill Young, the former Test loosehead, was aghast yesterday at the apparent downgrading of the set pieces, especially coming on top of the selection on Thursday of three specialist looseheads in the squad of 29 for the June internationals, with Baxter the only regular tighthead chosen.
Wallabies coach Robbie Deans on Thursday nominated Waratahs prop Benn Robinson as Australia's starting loosehead, saying the Brumbies' Ben Alexander and Pek Cowan of the Western Force, both excellent ball-carriers in general play, would be expected to provide cover on the tighthead side.

I feel for the guy a bit. With injuries, loss of his dad, bad form of the reds, it hasn't been a good year for him. Also add to the fact that if Elsom returns he will own the 6 jumper. There's another half a dozen good 6's in Oz who he would have to fight to get a start anyway. Chapman, Mumm, Hodgson, Mowen, Higgy. It's not like he's the only one in the game.
If I were him, after a year like this, I'd probably make the same call.
Not even that stressed about Ione to be honest. Great finisher and defender, but his lack of lateral vision, inability to read an attack and Sivivatu like hands let him down. Got a lot of work to do before he is a regular wallaby in my books. |
