| kip, The Italian scrum half needs to find his mark with his passing to Gower or Gower needs to get closer to the scrum I have lost count of the amount of passes that have gone to ground so far. |

I think your right Gale. It's not that hard to switch codes if your good enough. SBW is a a bit unique in that he has played in the forwards in league but as a back in both codes. He is such a good athlete, he'll make a go of it wherever he chooses. A bit like Andy Farrell from UK. Played across the park in both codes.
Personally, I reckon he's best suited to the side of the scrum like Elsom. Both big hard runners who have good hands and are ferocious in defence. A little ruck and maul education and he's off and running into the AB's. Or Samoa, France or Oz. |

The guy is clearly capable. I think we are overdoing just how hard it is to convert.
Although I freely admit when I converted from league to union I did the opposite: I went from 2nd row to centres and I found it really hard. Issues like coming in from the side/going in thru the gate, releasing, kicking out of hand when isolated or under pressure were a real test. Can't say I had problems defensively though, nor with running lines. |

One of the biggest issues for League players becoming rugby forwards, particularly loosies, is the work rate. In league you take your hit-up, then stand back with your hands on your hips sucking in a few big ones while the next couple of forwards take their turn, whereas in rugby it full throttle until you get a set piece.
I agree SBW is designed for the back row, with size, strength, accelaration etc, but he didn't have a big work rate even at the Bulldogs, tended to come in, make an impact and then disappear, Hardly ideal for a rugby backrower!
I'm convinced the guy has genuine natural talent, but would need to see evidence that he make a loose forward.
As for a back, well we know they spend most of the game watching the real football!!lol.

gale, the thing about SBW converting to a loosie in union is that it is an extremely hard task. It has been tried before without much success. If he is having problems converting from league to a union back, then it wouldn't get any easier trying to play in the forwards for him. Centre is where he sees himself, and so do the coaches so far, i think he had a pretty reasonable game up against the best centre in world rugby, the couple of hospital passes he got didn't do him any favours either.
If he was as outstanding in league as everyone says he was, then he will eventually perform in union (if this is what he wants, I don't think he knows half the time), it will just take time. I think he has made the wrong move signing for another year with Toulon, but we will see.
I think the most successful conversion ever has been Brad Thorn who I now rate as one of the best 2nd rowers in the game. |

| Lets hope so Aimee but we are in a completely different scenario now. I believe Australia will exploit his inexperience in that position. |

Zedds,
You make it sound like he's the weak link when he's actually probably the strongest player they've got. He'll take the ball to the line all day and has a brill kicking game. He may get caught out in defence if they run the right angles in the backs, but over all Gower is a pretty complete footy player and knows how to run a back line. And you don't get picked for SOO if you don't have the goods.
He was pretty much Bayonne player of the year in his first year and has slotted into the 10 spot for them quite well in recent times. I don't think the Wallas really know what to expect from him and that is the danger. He has nothing to lose and that makes him more dangerous.
There'll be a few points in it, but 60-70 is a bit ambitious. |
