Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
Personally Froggy I think Hynes will need to pull out a massive game to replace anyone. My read on the way Deans wants to play the game is that he wants the back three to be inter-changeable throughout the game. In Mitchell, O'Connor, Ashley Cooper and Turner you have four players who have great kicking games and are equally comfortable on the wing or at FB.

It means that the FB can chase his kicks or move out of position in either attack or defence and have one of the other wingers slot into his spot without leaving his position exposed.

It also means that when you've got Gits, Barnes, Turner, Mitchell & O'Connor or AC on the park you have 5 very effective tactical kickers.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
Well he was there in 03 Froggy and was directly involved in achieving the same result.

It is a stupid arguement anyway, we have had one test match each against completely different opposition of which Oz had by far the easiest game. So yeah if it makes Australia happy 1 nil to Deans.

Did you cheap Barstards make him take a boat?

IMO. In answer to your real comment he is giving game time to his best wingers. Hynes was outstanding last year and was plagued by injury this year. He deserves his shot and I am sure he will do well. Very dangerous player.
It's simple and wise from Deans, others would call it rotation but I am sure a few around here can find another term to say the same thing without saying the R word.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
On the subject of Wallaby selections, I am trying to read Deans thoughts on Wing. Does the selection of Turner and Hynes mean that is his preferred pair, or does it mean Mitchell has one spot, and he is trying to see who will join him?

Or none of the above?

By the way Zedds, yes GH won the trinations & Bledisloe last year, and all credit to him, but to be fair Deans was straight off the boat at the time. He also doesn't carry the Albatross of taking the best team in the world into the WC and not making the finals!

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
They have been talking about his demise since he lost to France in the world cup, that's nothing new. They shut up for a while after beating SA and Oz into submission last year and now they are on it again.

That's the life of an Allblacks coach.
Henry and allblacks Trinations 4 and Bled 5.
Deans and Wallabies None, Nada, Zip........

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
Even in the SMH today they were having a go a Henry for not working out that rolling mauls a strong scrum and break down defence would be factors in the game against the French with the new laws.Where as Oz seemed to have an answer to the rolling maul and a strong scrum.
Deans 1
Henry zip.
They are already talking of his demise over in NZ

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
Ado,

I thought Kimlin was a flanker/lock, not the other way around. Regardless, I understand he regularly plays both.

Will be very interesting to see if they bother changing around he and Mumm. I reckon they'll stay put but play their normal games in the loose.

Really looking forward to seeing how the Wallas 'B' team performs.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
Kimlin at 6 Gale? Isn't he primarily a lock? Or is there going to be a bit of swapping positions between Kimlin and Mumm at set piece time. Be interesting to watch.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
that's a very different looking side to last week.

Difference between this side and the one AB fielded is that they are all - bar Smith - in their regular positions, meaning it would appear that Wallabies have a bit more depth at this point.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
Dingo is experimenting that's the long and the short of it. I guess if your going to experiment, now is the time to do it. For those that didn't know the side is:

James O'Connor, Lachie Turner, Ryan Cross, Quade Cooper, Peter Hynes, Berrick Barnes, Luke Burgess, George Smith (capt), David Po *** , Peter Kimlin, Dean Mumm, James Horwill, Ben Alexander, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Pekahou Cowan.
Replacements: Stephen Moore, Benn Robinson, Nathan Sharpe, Phil Waugh, Josh Valentine, Matt Giteau, Adam Ashley-Cooper.

My guess is this side will only play together this week. Last weeks side will roll out again against the frogs for sure. Also it looks like Tahu & Tuquiri are well and truly on the nose.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
what the heck is Quade Cooper doing in that team?why not bring Tahu in the centres if you wanna experiment?see how he goes at this level after another 1 year of rugby?
and i know i am probably the only one who will say this...but when will he give Tuquiri some playing time?
i certainly hope he will not stick to Drew Mitchell and Turner for the Tri Nations, especially not Mitchell, when you play the AB's and the Springboks you will need somebody with Lote's defesive capabilities, which are way far superior to what Mitchell and even Turner are capable at the moment...
i know everybody is totally excited how our backline is going at the moment, but what teams they played so far?AB's and Springboks and even France will be a totally different game and level where you need experience and a defensive line that you can rely on.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
I hope the Wallabies watched the AB game and are starting to do some Mauling practice. The French Mauled very well and as the S/H sides haven't done it in a while it was no surprise to see them use it in attack.
Henry missed the boat on that one.

Just how many lineouts did the Wallabies win lastnight?

The Italians won everyone that I watched, but I didn't watch the full game.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
I thought the Italians outhussled us a bit at the breakdown, their defence was very flat, up very fast and very enthusiastic. The timing of some of our runners close to the ruck is poor, as a result they are either getting the ball too far back or having to stop their run to take it, and so not get over the advantage line. If we do that aginst the AB's or Boks we will be running backwards at an incredible rate!

I agree with the other posters, however, things are coming along well. I like the way Alexander is developing at tight head. Also no-one has mentioned Mortlock, the old fella was at his unstoppable best last night. Luke McAlister must still have nightmares about that big, bald head!

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
from what i get from the game last night, Robbies concerntrating on the backs and one of their attributes as i could see is that they can kick effectively from the back. Lote and the others wil have to brush up their shills if they want to get back in the team.Tell you what, watching club rugby with the S14 players back has lifted the level of the game.Such a great concept....our club made 15k the week Lote and Tahu played , shows what stars can do for the game and also for the confidence of the noes that don't.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
I with you on this Panther. Deans really looks to building something special doesn't he. I'm liking very much the way he's building their style of play as well. (Oh so Cantebury)
That Gitz & Barnes combo is really taking shape and the back three worked very well as a unit last night I thought.
Scrum was very solid and Smith was his usual brilliant self. I'm sure once we get a fit Rocky and Palu to add to the pack it will have the added punch it needs. I can't believe I'm saying this, but we actually have a lot more front row depth than NZ! When guys like Sheperdson, Kepu, Dunning etc cant even make the squad, depth is pretty strong.

Still haven't played any of the big three nations which is where the real test of progress will come, but other than that all looking very positive long term.

Tel you what Ado, i think the All Black might have to look out and watch these young Wallabies....I think 2011 could be another WC for the Wallabies....looking at the way Robbie Deans is bringing them along i think they will be a force to reckon with come WC..or even earlier the Bledisloe.

Re:Wallaby selections Reply to this message
Happy with that. I gotta say am most happy with the way the backs are shaping up. The spine of Gits, Barnes and the Kid look very very good. How sharpe is the kicking game of Gits and Barnes?

Still not sure about Alison in the front row. Wouldn't mind seeing Alexander get more time on the park. Also need Elsom and Palu back as well.

I'm liking what dingo is doing here. Backs are great. Forwards heading in the right direction.

Not a world beating performance, but pretty damn good for outing number 2 for this side.
