Totally agree...Rc

there nothing much a Half back can do without the ball either...or you could just help the Ref out with most of his decisions like Gregan used to do and i do say that was effective until he started hitting bone at their ankles

{Gregan and Marshall are perfect examples}.

Yeah Marshall was brilliant when the All Blacks lineout was owned by the Wallabies for the early part of this decade.
Marshall was dynamic when a six- man England outscrummed an eight -man ABs in 2003.
He was outlandish when the Wallaby forwards were out stripping, outplaying and out muscling the ABs in the 2003 semi final.
Gregan was fantastic as the Wallaby forwards became an international joke from 2005 to 2007.
A scrumhalf can bark orders and direct but if a pack sucks, it sucks and no amount of yelling, pointing and venting can make it better.

hey jam2pou,

{rc, I would have to strongly disagree with your comments. Everybody knows that a forward pack going forward makes it a lot easier for a halfback. A prime example would be Leonards best game this year(against the bulls), where the forwards were going forward}

Mate I agree with you 100%, I meant that the Chiefs pack is inconsistent, sometimes solid, sometimes loose.
When the Chiefs forwards are not firing, (not always just sometimes), Leonard has to work a hell of a lot harder. Doing this had made him a tough and wiley player.
Whereas, we could count on one hand the times Crusaders pack has gone backwards. Ellis has not been in this situation too often.
What I'm trying to say is we get to see a players true worth when things are going wrong, not when they get opportunity after opportunity served up to them on a plate.

The Canties are good because they play as a unit and do not structure their game around any particular player.

GK: >Gregan? Can't tell me his forwards paved the way.<

My experience was that the very best halfbacks make their pack better, via leadership, intelligence, courage, and skill. The success of mediocre halfbacks (which includes physically skillful but stupid or poorly committed) depends almosty entirely on their forwards.

The media haven't quoted Henry but have said he is impressed by the depth of halfbacks. Who knows?

Does Henry still like Ellis? Or does his statement from 1 and a half years ago still stand? Why in the world would he like Ellis when Leonard is superior to him. I just cant quite see how you can rate Ellis on the same par as Leonard.

Ellis is no doubt a good halfback, but when you have the defense going backwards, including their halfback, then you wouldve thought he'd make a lot more metres/breaks in the game.

Ellis and Leonard will both get starts for the All Blacks as long as they are injury free. I have already stated that we won't know who first choice is because they will be rotated.
Leonard's form is probably the better but Henry likes Ellis. Both could do the job. Ellis will know and would have played Super 14 with more of the players.

Re:Are Saders as Good as Everyone Says? Reply to this message
Ellis plays behind, arguably, the most efficient and effective forward pack in the comp.
Leonard plays behind an inconsistent pack, (sorry KOB but it's true mate).
Leonard would have no choice but to take the gaps and make meters as his forwards are sometimes unable.
Playing behind the Chiefs pack has certainly made Leonard a better player.

<<No GK you would argue Leonard is good because of how he rips through the opposition. Face is Ellis is no where near Leonards form.>>

No that isn't MY argument. It was someone else's and I simply put their argument back to front to show that neither argument is correct.
Leonard is playing brilliant at the moment. He has excelled since playing for the All Blacks. Henry has stated that Ellis was preferred over Leonard last year but injury changed things. Leonard may not have been given the opportunity if Ellis played the whole Super 14 season last year. Henry has proven that form means nothing to his selections so it could go either way. My guess is that Henry will rotate them and we will never know who is better or Henry’s first choice.

Lately yes. I have been disappointed in the last year with Henry and the NZRU. I'm not the only one.
Oh and it is Super 14 season. Once the Crusaders wrap up the comp and the test season starts, I will be Black and Black.

Re:Are Saders as Good as Everyone Says? Reply to this message
Ellis looks like the lovechild of Mehrtens and Marshall. And the argument that a player only looks good because of the others around them is a joke. You could argue that Leonard only looks good because the other players around him are less than average.
The Crusaders are a great team because they play as a team and not a bunch of individuals. Ellis is just one part of this team and believe me not one of those Crusaders players is being carried.

Ado,

Leonard form 9. Mils will get a place. If Fatboy Lauaki continues his form, he'll dump Rodney @ 8, who has been less than average this season. That's already 3 Chiefs.

Lena,

I've watched every Saders game so far. Ellis is over-rated. Why? He's behind the best pack in the world and inside the best 10 on the planet - so it's easy to look good. Put Leonard in that spot and Ellis' form will resemble schoolboys. He does remind me of a young Mehrtens in looks eh.

I thought it was obvious! Their handling of last years player management issues and the national coach selection was appalling.
