Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
Sorry crewzin22, I still disagree.
But I do accept we will have to wait for the S14 to see if he is back in the game, or back in the pub.
When compared to dross like Drew Mitchell, I guess Lote is the best winger in OZ, compare him to real wingers like Howlett, Delasau and Habana and he's a sad joke.
I'm looking for young gun Lachlan Turner to give old Mr Tuqiri a wake up call this season.
That more than anything may bring him back.
Lastly, I'm mostly dirty on Tuqiri because the swine lost me a $50 bet by not returning to League last year!

I hope Henry is reconditioning himself!

The players, no! Reconditioning is considered a dirty word!

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
Once Tuquiri stopped counting his gazzilions and go sent to fat camp under instrucions from knuckles his game lifted 150%.

That try in the world cup where cordingly performed a box kick inside his own 22 and Lote took it on the full at pace resulting in a length of the field try to Mitchell was one of the bet peices of individual brilliance of the year.

I too think he is overpaid, but he is the best winger in Oz by a country mile. I hope he lives up to his talent and rep this year.

RC
What do you mean by this?
Look up to him?
Did you see Tuqiri play last year?

Your joking right?, mate if you new how highly respected Lote is in the Tahs N Wallabie camp its not funny. I am NO fan of the guy trust me far from it.

Ohh yeah well if you have a c/r/a/p season that's not the end and yes he does look like his lost the passion for Union but he is still a force to be reckon with.Let's see what 08 bring's

As much as you wouldn't want him to be a senior player, bad luck bro he is whether you like it or not.

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
RC Centre is probably the closest the two games get.
Defence patterns are nearly the same out there
And attack wise you are far enough from the loosies to run the same lines looking for the hole. Under the new rules, the distance between attack and defence will mean.
Even more chances. so I think we can look at a centres performances in either code and predict how they will play...UNTIL the tackle is completed, because I think that is where the two game begin to fundamentaly change...In one you get rid of the pill backwards and the other hold on to it like its precious. About Lote...he seems to lift only for some games and goes missing for others. I personally think with Deans at the helm you might see a improved Lote screaming around the field....;)

crewzin22,

Apart from Sailor Lote has taken off in the Wallaby ranks and has become one of there main senior players they look up too.

What do you mean by this?
Look up to him?
Did you see Tuqiri play last year?
I didn't know the Wallabies looked up to a tired, non-performing joke who simply took the money and didn't care anymore.
No- I'm not climbing into League players in general but I simply couldn't let such an untrue statement go unchallenged.
And also, I know nothing about Tahu but I do know it's pointless to try to predict how a player will go in union based on league performances and vice versa.

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
Well that theory did not work with Umaga, he started on the wing but played his best rugby at centre. Mind you he had a lot longer rugby career than the names you mentioned.
Rogers had a terrible pass left to right and failed miserably in the centres. He was a better winger and a much better league player.

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
Centre probably the worst place to put a rugby league player...look at Lote , played ther last tour ,smashed a lot of people and let in alot of tries.....The same will go for Tahu........Sailor could only play wing...thats four wingers in the last decade of Rugby ....and the only one that did a half decent jpb was rogers when he got on the feild

The players cried when he told them after the grand slam win. Wayne Smith said "A mark of respect not shown to many players let alone Captains"

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
About Tana,

He actually signed up for the Newcastle Knights in 91 but only lasted two weeks, he said he was just a kid and realised he wasn't ready for that sort of life. So back to NZ where his brother Mike convinced him to play Union at Petone in 1993. After that there was no turning back. Interestingly enough it was Wayne Smith (at the time the new Allblacks coach) who put pressure on the Wellington to play at 13, he saw the potential for him in that position and new Umaga wanted to move in. A master stroke that put him in the 13 jersy.

At the end of his time Smith wanted to make Umaga vice captain looking at making him Captain in the near future. All this came undone when Mitchell took over and pretty much left Umaga out in the cold. Mitchell and Deans dropped him entirely from the squad at the beginning of the season, citing an ongoing knee problem. Umaga wasn't to chuffed so he went and played with Petone on both legs. Fortunately his replacement at 13 Robinson (Canty) got a knock in the head leting Umaga in for the second test of the year but was dropped again when Robinson recovered. 14 Canty players in the starting 15 with 1 wellingtonian (Lomu) people were not happy.
Umaga struggled to get in the team even though he was a far superior player to Robinson, it wasn't until Robo got another concussion (thank you opposition) that he went on the field and sparked a remarkable 41-20 victory over the Boks and elevated him to his rightful spot as a starting 13.

At the WC with a knee injury where we lost to Stirling Mortlock LOL Tana said he could have played and would have I quote "gone out on crutches" even though he was not 100%. It was not ment to be.

Henry made him Captain, his best ever move. The Allblacks immediately responded as we all know and went to even greater heights.
His reason for retiring was family not GH, he had respect from players, coaches and the entire country plus opposition (just ask Stirling).

Dont care either way. Tana is a great player and a credit to the AB jersey, his family and heritage. And I'm an Aussie.

Apart from that I played a couple of mins against him in the singapore 7's around 96 I think. Thank god I avoided him cause he smashed everyone in his way!

Right on there Gab bro, did hear about TONGAN-KIWI-BRIT: Former New Zealand rugby league star Lesley Vainikolo inclusion into the England squade?

He was a hand full to deal with when he played League now we have to deal with his power "almost" (LOMU) type aggression.

He will certainly please and Im guessing big things for Vainikolo.

GAB. thx for your info regarding Tana, man it would be sad to know if what you said is true, :(

Apart from Sailor Lote has taken off in the Wallaby ranks and has become one of there main senior players they look up too.

Never take any thing away from a Rugby League player turn Union, he is a deadly animal to deal with, ask those who have had to defend against them. Anyways Tahu is only 26 and from what I've heard from family members he is like a bull ready to do battle with that red cape... :)

Ask our bro ""gabegiddens""

Didn't know that either GK, the eels should have just let him go, was never a fan of Tahu, but I thought he really stepped up for the Eels at the end, which again showed the measure of the man. But unfortunately League Clubs can get pretty pedantic at times, as you say GK Stupid, but hey my code(Sigh!)unfortunately does stupid things alot!

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
"Gab you might know, why do you think Tana gave up the AB jersey, even though he was like 31(I think) round that mark anyways, but he still had so much to offer NZRU. To retire from Internationals then to fly internationally to play/coach has me confused bro? what do you think?"

Dont know the full story but there is a rumour doing the rounds that he wasn't that happy with Henry...(though again scuttlebutt more than fact.)

The only other story I heard was that the powers that be, thought him only as a stop-gap till there boy(McGaw) was ready for the World Cup.(Again more rumour than hard evidence)

I do know that early in his League career he was supposed to go to I think the Eels in Sydney, but he got homesick, and hence his long allegiance to Welly and the Canes.
Moving to France I think was looking at longterm goals he has had a penchant to coach, and I think he went more to do with that than the playing side of the game, also the club had a few AB's and Ozzies an Jappies already there.
Also his family went with him and I think that is what keeps him settled. But yeah I think Henry was already moving him out and maybe tana got wind of it...Body Language at TV interviews post match would suggest that all was not that rosy between King Henry and his Captain.
Who knows? Maybe Tana just thought his body wasn't up to the crunch and bash of International standards. Or he had lost the fire you need for that arena. As any ex-player knows sooner or later the body starts to drop pretty big hints to the mind. Also in both codes centres take a hammering both in Defence an Offence. still I reckon the AB's would have been glad to have him at the WC. Funny thing was he always said he would end up back at Wainui, playing one last season for his old club, but lottsa Francs vs a couple of beers after the game...Know what I would take, still "hope" as they say "springs eternal."
Either way crewzin22 he did both his codes proud as a Junior Kiwi International and then AB.

You read correct. Suspensions carry over from code to code in terms of league and Union. At least domestically in Oz anyway,

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
Yeah he had a 2 (I think it was 2) week ban which carries over to Union. They tried to get him selected for the ARC but his old League club wouldn’t release him in time. His League club wanted compensation for an early release and the Waratahs wouldn’t pay it. Stupid really as the League season was over. I never heard the result of the 7s debate.

Hang Ohn this is new, I might have got the wrong end of the proverbial stick, are you all saying that a NRL two week ban has moved over to Union? Seems a bit strange, but I'd agree with it, if it is true. Guess a dangerous tackle is a dangerous tackle.

Re:Super 14 thread !!! Reply to this message
With you there crewzin. Tahu had a cracker close to last years NRL comp with the eels. He absolutely crushed boy wonder Falau from the storm in the eels last outing.

And GK I think you're right about Tahu. He had a 2 match suspension from the aforementioned hit on Falau and I think they were going to fast track him through the ARC so he could get rid of them. But I dont think that happened and they were going to run him through a 7's comp to get rid of the suspension.

A bit cheeky huh.

As to Burgess, Australia needs a dynamic 9 / 10 combo.
Berrick Barnes has shown he has the goods and place him and Burgess together and there's a perfect balance to the already unmatched Mortlock / Giteau partnership.
